Really wishing I had sold my AHWT CD last month when it was going for around $30 on discogs.com.
It's the rare un-remastered original! Should increase in price again some day.

They're good, and pretty fun live. Am hoping they'll release the bonus compilation CD from the Future Bible Heroes boxset separately too, so I won't have to re-buy their two albums to get it.

The release dates from Amazon.com.
Martial Arts Weekend: December 2, 2002
Definitely wrong. I got mine retail from Aquarius in April '02. Maybe 12.2.02 rather than 2.12.02?
Discogs says 2001, without any specific date. Absolutely Kosher says 2002 though, but also without specifying any date. But hey, that's good enough for me! Mostly curious what year they're from.

The release dates from Amazon.com.
All Hail West Texas: February 19, 2002
Ghana: April 23, 2002
Martial Arts Weekend: December 2, 2002
See America Right: November 25, 2002
Tallahassee: November 5, 2002
No lisings for DitS or JEB though, and some of these dates are different from wikipedia and discogs.com.
Oh, and just got this response on twitter. So looks like we're on our own.

Thanks for the responses so far!
According to the wikipedia discography, Ghana was released in 1999. But JD's liner notes are signed 2001, and it's clearly stated the compilation was released in 2002 just underneath that. So I guess it's 2002. It was maybe an even busier year than I initially thought, then!
The physical release of All Hail West Texas is sparse on information. It's mentioned

2002 - 13 days ago
What John Darnielle penned material saw release in the year 2002?
I'm asking because, according to wikipedia, it seems like an almost impossibly prolific year, with the following releases: All Hail West Texas, Tallahassee, Martial Arts Weekend, Devil in the Shortwave, Jam Eater Blues, and See America Right.
That's a total of three albums, and three EPs / singles.
So a good year for fans.

My most favourite is probably Jonathan Richman. The most gentle and heartfelt lyricist I know of. There are few (if any) other lyricists who are as consistently good, in my opinion.
A few more who're pretty high on my list:
Darren Hayman
Eef Barzelay
Tom Waits
Stephin Merritt
Jeffrey Lewis

News!
Starting with the good news (if you're actually a tSoPA fan): made two previous releases available on bandcamp.
Negative Polarity. Released mid-December last year for free downloading through an online label. Playing various tunes on my Casio PT-80.

JD would hate this thread, I think
I think he hates most threads about tMG. He's not a big fan.
So to talk about some band other than tMG, I think I'd most like re-release of Martial Arts Weekend.
On the bonus disc it would include all their released songs up to that point (which I guess would be "Badger Song", "That", "I Hear The Planet

Huh, didn't know this was OOP! Perfect time for a remastered double disc re-release, then.
I'm looking for: Nine Black Poppies and Babylon Spring. But I'm poor and cheap and I don't think anyone should have to pay more than $6.50 for an EP.

Deluxe re-release CDs are all the rage these days! Or, some of the rage, at least. Examples: Deserter's Songs, Give Up, Talking With The Taxman About Poetry, Dead Media, The Sophtware Slump, and probably many more. Sometimes remastered, always with a decent selection of bonuses.
So, which tMG CD would you like to see being given such a treatment, and what bonuses would it have?

I think Tallahassee has the best slow-and-subtle-and-soft tMG songs yet. #RandomStatement
Also, anyone feel like trying to "translate" each song into a line or two of narrative? As in, what's the story being told in the song, or what scene is being described.

Definitely enjoying this! Favourite so far: "Hold You". Somewhat reminiscent of Jeffrey Lewis and Darren Hanlon.
I'm curious how exactly one defines folk punk though. Both genres are, as far as I know, supposed to be rough and heartfelt, with punk being more aggressive and folk being more based around the acoustic guitar.

Thanks for the positive feedback! Although, all the feedback posted here so far has been from people who've contributed to the album, so it might not be super impartial...
A review from a person who might be slightly less partial, can be found here:

The next LP? An EP? A single? A compilation? A free online download? The possibilities are many.
This still ranks pretty low on my personal "list of songs by tMG I'd like to see get a proper release and studio treatment" (fingers crossed for "Rockin' Rockin' Pet Store"!), but still, neat if it were to happen.

i have to admit, i'm a little intrigued by the idea of Biebs doing a Mountain Goats cover album.
Trust me, having heard his version of "Little Drummer Buy", it wouldn't be pretty.

Response so far has been positive, and I've set a new personal record with 15 facebook likes on bandcamp! Bitchin'! But sales have been slim to non-existing. Perhaps 5 USD is too high?
I also just made this blog entry:

this was auctioned off as an actual cassette, with the promise from JD that it would never be released elsewhere. The person who won the auction digitized it and put it up on YouTube. It may also be available on a mysterious website, but is otherwise not released.

Still hoping we'll see another proper tMG compilation one of these days. So many great songs I'd love to pay for and own.
Random question. Was "Eugene Sue" ever actually released, aside from on YouTube? Was there some "official" mp3, aside from audio rips of the video?

Those who've been around a while might remember that I'm the frontman for the Norwegian low-to-mid-fi, mostly one-mand band, the Society Of Poor Academics! And I / we / it are reasonably ecstatic to announce the new album...

You know, Tallahassee is a really good album. I initially didn't like it too much - too many slow numbers with subtle arrangements, not enough "No Children" and "Alpha Rats Nest" - but now I'm really liking it. Especially "Game Shows Touch Our Lives", "Idylls Of The Kings", "Peacocks", and "Have To Explode". Strong melodies, excellent gu

Been reading a few Norwegian fairy tales. Turns out they're pretty silly, messed up, funny, illogical, poorly paced, with no moral. They're kind of like a mix of surrealism and nihilism. At least the ones I've read so far.
