I was surprised that no one linked to Wurster's video from yesterday (now someone will point out that it has in fact been linked, and I'll feel foolish — but I looked around, really). But the important question is, ‘Does this count in the tMG catalogue now?’ Will people start covering it on 'Not the Goats’ homemade CDs? Will someone post it to Songmeanings? Yeah, it just feels a lot different now from what it did then. When his first two albums came out, 'liking James Taylor' was still kind of an underground thing (hard as it is to imagine, in a world where 'liking James Taylor' amounts to an assertion of laid-back post-middle-aged bourgeoiscracy). 12-year-old me was listening to the Beatles (still together then), Sly and the Family Stone, the Who, the soundtrack to Hair, the Isley Brothers, and Creedence Clearwater. I listened mostly the WAMO, the soul station in Pittsburgh. First album purchase was... hmmm... A woman came up to me after church today, who had been to the King Tut’s concert in June; she had recognised me in the crowd as being one of the cathedral clergy, and when she heard JD introduce “Sign of the Crow 2” with reference to my having written an academic article about him, she put two and two together. Meus Spes (+1 name), there is a strong and often vocal constituency here which tends to treat H&FG as something not to be discussed, in deference to JD's frustration at its premature distribution. That feeling may have abated, or the guardians of that particular portal may not have noticed your post, or... I dunno what else.
