LISTEN TO ME
Or don't.
BUT DO
Because they are so good.
AND
You are wrong. About them. The cashews. You might be right about me. But not about them. The cashews. They are
GOOD

That is plainly absurd. You can't be serious.
If you'd said,
"Fuck you, I really prefer curried cashews."
Well then OK. But, otherwise, no way.

I enjoy raw cashews a lot more than salted or roasted cashews. Anyone else?

Thank you, John.
Song-wise: obviously a lot of the focus is going to be around the biblical references themselves, decoding them, etc.; but WOW: the thing that struck me first and foremost is the music itself: totally reinvented --nothing like I was expecting--"new" sounding.
Anyone else hit immediately by how it sounds?

QuotenigelOh oh oh me me! Probably my favorite single tMG bootleg is Cow Haus from 1998. It's old but it sounds great, and John plays Tulsa Imperative and Tell Me on a Sunday and other hard-to-find stuff.
ETA: Also! how did I forget? BEST version of Orange Ball of Hate, ever ever ever.
And, unless I'm misremembering, FAMILY HAPPINESS

QuoteSonofgravyright when John hits his stride with the impossible to sing line "I took your hips in my hands and I threw you down to the new-found, rich, brown, deep, wet ground"
Agreed 100%. One of the best lines John's ever written.

Totally. I saw them here in Buffalo, oh, 3 weeks ago, and they were really, really fun. I like their recorded stuff, and hearing them live totally solidified their "these folks are great" status in my mind.
Just really FUN!

QuotetruckfaceI am a Hold Steady fan, but am very much not crazy about this rendition.
I wasn't totally crazy about "Dance Music" (I like this one a bit more, for some reason) but, more than anything, as a HS fan, I'm just really excited to hear them doing John's songs.

QuoteshlackI think most of the fun with a lot of the unreleased songs is finding them in random places or stumbling across them in live shows. It's always such a joy when you're listening to a show and suddenly say, "Gasp! I haven't heard this before!" and then you look at the track listing and ta-daaaah, unreleased song.
BINGO

I'm also gonna point out (in the realm of VERY pleasant surprises): although "Surrounded" remains my favorite song on the album (favorite new tMG song in a while, I think), and although I bought the album primarily as a tMG fan, my second favorite song is hands-down a JV song: "Steps Columns Pillars." That is one beautiful fucking song.

I thought I read someplace (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong which I well may be: this is just from memory) that of the 1,000 pressed 200 would be green.

QuoteblacklinerQuoteTarbox, HoraceJust pointin' out: as I understand it, Merritt discourages clapping due to his hyperacusis, not any general distaste for appreciation.
what i meant was the handclaps in songs. i believe the discussionunder discussion was the one in the 69LS novel liner notes
Gotcha. Thanks.
