Wha Choo Readin?

In the middle of Focus by Arthur Miller. Honestly, I'm not so into it so far.

i'm reading infinite jest and loving the hell out of every sentence.
May 19, 2010 05:12PM | Re: Wha Choo Readin?
gotta thank whoever told me to read "the preacher"...........now everything else that i feel like reading looks boring.

still haven't given up on "o henry." those stories are just the right length.

The book ruined my soul in pretty much the best way. Ball-achingly good; also, almost absurdly sad. (Not a spoiler, incidentally; I'm refering to the whole book, from sentence one.)

Just finished Water For Elephants.
It was frakkin CUTE.

I just started reading Play It as It Lays (my friend had a copy and I knew JD was into JD. fun fact: the book is dedicated to "John." I laughed). I'm not that far in, but it's a short book so I guess I am kinda far in. The prose really services the characters, or at least Maria.

The introduction in my copy says that lots of people have a hard time liking Maria, so of course I'm totally relating to her.
May 20, 2010 06:15PM | Re: Wha Choo Readin?
play it as it lays is fucking amazing.
dedication refers to her husband, john dunne. if you want your mind blown, read "the year of magical thinking." i'm not sure i ever quite recovered from reading that.

The wiki entry sounds pretty intense. How's it structured? The wiki mentions a "story" which makes me wonder whether it's a straight narrative or collection of vignettes or what.

it's hard to describe, i think. it's more like one of her essays, but in book form. i'm not sure that it's exactly a story, but it is because it's her story of grief from all angles. she examines it from each side.

it is a story, but it isn't.
it's an essay, but it's a book.

makes perfect sense. tongue sticking out smiley

So in other words it's a "book I definitely want to read"

quoted for truth. it is an amazing book, as is play it as it lays. also worth picking up is Live and Learn which is 3 collections of essays: slouching towards bethlehem, the white album and after henry- and when the articles and essays are good they are very good indeed.

i'm glad to hear people like it! last time we were talking about it here many were saying it was overrated. its one of my favourite books ever. DFW was a genius and not afraid to show it.

Right now I'm reading When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka in addition to the books mentioned in previous posts. I'm also slowly reading Everything That Rises Must Converge by Flannery O'Connor. My primary focus right now is my Salinger reading, which would be kind of redundant to include here because of the wonderful See More thread. Still, all the books I'm reading are really good.

I'm reading the new David Mitchel (1000 Autumns of Jacob de Zoet) and Brief Interviews with Hideous men by DFW. Both excellent.

I can't bring books into work, so in my downtime here I've been reading torrented scans of Star Wars novels. This shit is all so bad, but it reaches deep into my reptilian brain and trips some pleasure switch that's lain dormant since I was in high school. It's just enough to keep me reading but not enough to keep me from thinking THIS SUCKS THIS IS FOR CHILDREN THIS SUCKS.

I hate that we aren't allowed to like books for children. (Young adult really, but who's counting?)

Book I just finished:
Catching Fire by Suzanne ... Collins.
Book two finished.
Can't wait for the last one.
EXCITED.
