Since it seems we've got some Vonnegut fans here, anyone ever check out Welcome to the Monkeyhouse? Some pretty amusing stories in there.
April 14, 2012 12:11AM | Re: Wha Choo Readin?
love monkeyhouse. vonnegut is like the best thing ever.

anybody ever read welcome to the monkeyhouse? vonnegut totally rules!
April 16, 2012 12:31AM | Re: Wha Choo Readin?
no, but im on it. im gonna read them all. i finshed slaughterhouse 5 also. good shit. i think i liked cats cradle better though. not that it matters. they're all way above 98% of everything else, in my book. next for me is look at the birdie because i already bought it, but thanks to you guys, welcome to the monkey house will come after that. any other favorites that deserve priority on my vonnegut checklist?

I'm reading Haruki Murakami's 1Q84. I loves me some Murakami but this one is a little unusual, even by his standards. This is like the eighth book of his that I've read and he really recycles a ton of weirdly specific material between books to the point that I want to make a Murakami bingo card. Intertwining protagonists, talking cats, author protagonists, everyone is an expert on jazz and/or classical music, 30-something protagonist has platonic relationship with an offbeat teenage girl, prostitute with a heart of gold, and women with strange psychic premonition. Basically yeah, just read one of his books already!

Catching up on this thread reminded me how little Vonnegut I've read (just Slaughterhouse 5), so I went ahead and downloaded Breakfast of Champions.

Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace

Second time through for me and, wow, there are so many little references that are currently blowing my mind. If you haven't read it, read it.. if you have read it, read it again and prepare for little yelps of excitement every now and again.

I read it pretty slow the first time, but man - I'm only ~half/2/3rds through a reread - there are things that didn't register as key the first time and bits I'd completely forgotten the joy of.

yep.

it's a shame this forum doesn't have a [spoiler] function because i really want to spew forth about these little references...

i'll only say that there are, so far, crossovers involving Pemulis and Hal that i hadn't even considered. Has anyone sat down and, like, mapped everything out? The links, the locations, etc?

That would be a big job.

ETA: (ha...i feel that this acronym takes on a wonderful new meaning)

what i enjoy most about this book are the scenes that take place at the academy. the dialogue and narration surrounding Hal, Pemulis, Troetsch etc. are brilliant to read.

Considering I persuaded our local library to buy it for me to read, I really should have another (3rd) go at Infinite Jest.

Collected Fictions - Borges. So damn good. The sheer thought behind all of his work, the inventiveness of Ficciones especially, just brilliant.

Infinite Jest is currently on my shelf, staring at me, and I've decided to give it a try this summer, when I have nothing else to do and can give it the time it deserves. I've read up extensively on Wallace and read a few of his shorter pieces, so I'm certainly curious about it.

I have 2 and 3 on my shelf to start... i spent twenty minutes in the pub on Saturday essentially signing a verbal contract with my friend that, yes, i will start them this week and then we can talk about how amazing it is!

looking forward to this big time:

finished this, and i really liked it.

i'm not sure how it would be to someone that hadn't already read all 7 of the original books.

but i thought it was super duper, and i hope he writes a lot more "betweener" dark tower books.

jericho hill please next!

Just finished Vloume 3 - didn't enjoy it as much as the others, 'Midsummer night's Dream' wasn't coherent or dark enough for me to get into. Calliope was great, though, and i'm looking forward to the rest.

Getting back to finishing this guy up, put all my reading off concentrate on my coursework last semester, now I've got a stack non fiction to plow through this summer. Also, finally going to read Fight Club.

Decided to take a break for nonfiction/history/philosophy for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I was pretty shaken by the imagery surrounding Lisbeth's advokat, as any one who has read this or seen Fincher's version of the film probably understands. Anyhow, I recommend this highly as someone who isn't very well read in the genre.
