I've read Consider the Lobster before this. Very interesting read too.

It is not horror in any sense. horrible things happen but it is not a horror book.
like every other book by chuck palahniuk (ie. Fight Club) it is a pessimistic look into human psychology, it touces on tons of stuff and will leave a lasting impression in your mind, but it also has tons of really crazy things in it that will disgust you. but the 2nd chapter (guts) is the worst. so if you make it past there the rest is smooth sailing.

the basic premise is a whole bunch of writer's going on a writer's retreat, where they will write their life stories, so it's kinda like a book of short stories but their all pulled together with the big story.

I started reading "Eating Animals" by J.S. Foer, and man, even though I'm a vegetarian since more than 15 years (and therefore should have a white vest and a good conscience), this book makes me feel guilty just being a human being and part of this capitalistic shit society...

Guess I'll go back hardcore-preaching the animal-lover's gospel again.

As a herpetologist in training, my reading material rarely starts any conversations that don't end with someone insinuating I'm a complete social outcast.

What a tragic life I lead.

Just read Lolita. If you're a fan of happiness, or if you'd rather like to experience joy at some point in your life, don't read this book. I'm pretty sure it's crushed my spirit.

I've just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy twice - I immediately had to start over after I finished the last page. Stark and beautiful - reminds me of reading Faulkner. Continuing on with Blood Meridian, then going back to Infinite Jest by DFW (I'm also on about pg 300) before The Pale King comes out in April.

Blood Meridian is amazing, I read it at least once a year.

My friend just gave me The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I'm not a big fantasy fan, but he said I'd like it. Has anyone read it and has any thoughts?

so excited for The Pale King. I'm probably setting myself up badly since its unfinished and everything, but the excerpts I've read have been great and the general themes of the novel seem incredibly interesting/important.

If you ever recover and are looking to read more Nabokov, try Pale Fire. Its not quite as depressing (still kinda bleak though), and is amazingly, incredibly, how-does-he-do-that well written.

(I only read things with the word pale in the title, apparently)

I'm avoiding Game on my way home from work on pay day with a week's wages in my pocket as I might just cave and buy a DS.
I've fond memories of going with my little brother and seeing the pre-release copy of Pokemon Sapphire playing the credits on a loop under glass in CeX and then promptly selling/trading in all the games we owned so we could spend £45 on the (out earlier) American version of it another shop had. We were 12 and 13 and had never spent more money on anything ever (and probably didn't for long afterward!).

I'm currently reading Cigarettes by Harry Mathews. A lady on the bus came up to me when I was reading Infinite Jest and recommended me him and William Gass (has anyone read The Tunnel? I was going to get that but it was more expensive, and I downloaded an audiobook excerpt but the voice grated.). I'm on the 5th chapter and I'm finding it hard going - I'm digging a lot of the writing but am a bit uninspired by the setting, I think. By now I usually would have given up, but I'm restricting myself to an A-Z of books I own (Except - any suggestions for Q, X, Y, or Z?) before I'm allowed to browse bookshops and buy anything again.

@betamax Are you enjoying At the Mountains of Madness? The Dunwich Horror is my 'D' book, I'm looking forward to it, having read a bit of it last year.
