i'm re-reading stephen king's dark tower series. i don't know why. i think it's ka.

funny, i'll finish the 7th book today or tomorrow. probably today.

9/9 to 11/18.

Question: Do you find yourself even mildly interested in Wind Through the Keyhole?

no.

but i'm mildly interested in why you'd ask whether i was mildly interested in it.

Scale of 1 to 10: More interested in the question / Less interested in Wind Through the Keyhole?

I reread them recently as well, and I just saw that he was working on another Dark Tower book. "King said, regarding the Dark Tower series, "It's not really done yet. Those seven books are really sections of one long über-novel."

scale of 1 to 10? 5/5, even steven.

as for king's comment on the uber-novel thing, i think it's out of context. the dark tower books are done. there won't be an 8th dark tower novel. the "uber-novel" he's referring to is his body of work, which was interwoven throughout the dark tower books.

i'm pretty sure at least. 5 out of 10 sure.

Yea. Looks like the new one will fall between Wizard and Wolves. I'm leaning a little lower on the scale though. Maybe a solid 2 / 2.5

if you are correct sir, and i hope you are......that is very exciting to me. i'm afraid i have to admit, just the thought of it gives me a little boner.

2 / 2.5

i'm hoping it's the story of what happens right after mejis in "wizard and glass"..........jericho hill, the horn of eld, fall of gilead, etc. of course, he'll have to not pick up the horn after the battle is over.

of course!

I love The Dark Tower with all my heart. One of the best book series ever IMO. I even dug the part with the author self-insertion, which is generally something that's terrible and trite and horrific.

Right now I'm reading The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. It's a collection of interwoven stories about the Vietnam war that are partly about the author's own experiences and partly made up. It's really emotionally moving. All the stories are told SO well. I really recommend it, even if you don't like books about war. If you're going to read one book about Vietnam in your life, make it this one.

I'm liking all the support for the Dark Tower I'm seeing here.

Anyway, I just got Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by Sedaris and it's excellent. He's so funny and does a really great job of making the animals act just like humans, but still keep it so that it's very clear, and they are very aware, that they are animals and they should act as such. My favorite story in it, on my first read, is The Toad, The Turtle, and The Duck, but I think that's just because the punchline is so outrageous and I'm a whore for things like that.

Life Of Pi. Hadn't expected the first part to be as long as it was, and having problems grasping how the lifeboat is designed, and just how big it is.

Why's everyone in this thread a f***ing Mountain Goats fan?!

Reading Ulysses right now. It's brilliant and has changed many of my views on what is possible in terms of the scope of a novel and really the basic idea of how people think. The Hades chapter is particularly good. Bloom is clearly afraid of death but views it almost as a practical concern of about the importance of one's job or eating lunch. Joyce's brilliance is the ability to show how life as a whole is a massive undertaking for any human.

ugh. how did "guts" treat you?

one of the neatest writing ideas i've read in awhile. good short stories in a good story tortilla wrapping it all up into the most horrendous burrito ever.

Just finished Toni Morrison's "Beloved", which devastates utterly. Now reading "Lolita", which is moving sort of inexorably toward a devastation of its own, I'm starting to think.

funny you should mention that, I got the audiobook and was listening to it at a basketball game when "guts" started and it got so intense that i thought i was gonna throw up so i walked to the bathroom and everything started to spin and stuff, next thing i know i woke up on the bathroom floor bleeding from my eyebrow, because apparently i went face first into the marble floor when i passed out. but golly, i loved that book. totally worth the ER trip.
February 14, 2011 10:08AM | Re: Wha Choo Readin?
my reaction was not so visceral, but i did feel i had a "fight or flight" thing going on. i definitely wanted to stop reading for some reason. but i kept going. good thing, because i might not have picked it back up.

never read something that made me feel that way. i wanted to punch the book and run away, actually. and punch myself while i ran away for reading that story. and then eat the book and punch my haunted poop when it came out.

or something like that.

my suggestion is that no one read chuck palahniuk's "haunted" ever!

I'm also not really into my 'horror' stuff (is that what it would be termed? I'm not sure) so i'll probably hate it!
February 14, 2011 10:40AM | Re: Wha Choo Readin?
it's not horror, i don't think.

more....terror.
