what's oink?
February 22, 2007 05:00PM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
Music based torrent site. Rather prestigious, due to the awkward entry requirements (you need to get an invite). There are regulations about the minimum bitrate of stuff uploaded, and you have to keep a decent ratio.

The main draw for me is the bitrate stuff. Anything less than than 192kbps annoys me probably far more than it really should.

Doesn't dealing out invites to strangers on forums more or less counteract the point of an invite system?
February 22, 2007 05:26PM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
Yes. Quite probably.

I was on oink once. But I got banned after two days cuz I forgot to upload anything. These torrent sites are too much hard work.

You really don't need to upload anything if you just seed a lot. Torrent sites aren't that tough to use.

That being said, I'd be happy to invite anybody except for that I have no invites available. I do have Indietorrents invites available, if anyone wants those.

i was hoping for a tl;dr summary of sorts, but thank you.

From what I gather, Indietorrents is just as decent for stuff. An invite for that'd be great.
February 22, 2007 07:10PM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
If i had any spare invites i'd send them to someone this way, OiNK is a great site! It's got everything! I even found my brother! And my Sister's mother!
February 22, 2007 07:51PM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
what kind of stuff is on there? i'm not really into using torrents to download music, but i've always wondered what obscure bands you can find on oink and indietorrents.
February 22, 2007 09:24PM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
I too, am curious. I've never had too much trouble tracking shit down without sites like that, does it ust make the process easier?
February 22, 2007 10:51PM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
I should probably say that as the person who built these forums, I think it's great if you are discussing torrenting live stuff or whatever, but I'd personally rather you don't request/give out invites to places where you're downloading whole albums from artists who'd prefer that buy them.

Thanks! smiling smiley

My interest in such sites lies more in the realm of bootlegs and radio performances and unreleased gold. Downloading available albums has never sat right with me.
February 23, 2007 02:18AM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
yeah indietorrents is pretty awesome for live stuff I hear, dimeadozen too
February 23, 2007 02:21AM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
I can vouch for dimeadozen.
February 23, 2007 09:06AM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
i've found pretty much anything i've ever wanted, i've found my brother's album and my sister's mother's album and i've found bands that have only realised one album on a small lable a few years back and lost albums and albums that have only leaked onto OiNK and albums of people former bands, pretty much everything...everybody on there really wants to upload and really wants to see...more people want to seed than people want to download on average, because if you seed more you 1) get to keep your account 2) get to download faster

there is also just a ALL MUSIC MUST BE ON OiNK, vibe to it...

hm

i'm definitely into finding a good source for live shows
February 23, 2007 02:26PM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
I find that the live music archive on archive.org is pretty good.
February 23, 2007 03:58PM | Re: I should apologise in advance.
yeah, OiNK allows no live shows, and everything must be 192 or whatever bitrate...

I mean, it's really quick at downloading stuff, just look at this...

Quote
Oink
Seeders 1,312,434
Leechers 37,462

and as people share sometimes up to 100 torrents, everything downloads super fast due to such a high amount of seeders

Dimeadozen is great for live shows. Unfortunately, they have a user limit, so it's hard to sign up. They delete inactive accounts sometimes, though, so if you keep trying and happen to do it at just the right time, you can get in. Another one for live shows is [bt.etree.org] which has a whole lot of Grateful Dead and Phish shows, but there's an option to hide them. It's still pretty jam-bandy, but there's some good stuff on there. Indietorrents and Oink are mostly used to share full albums, although good live stuff shows up pretty frequently on both. And wandering through my bookmarks, I just stumbled across purelivegigs.com, which at a glance looks decentish. There are probably plenty of band-specific trackers also, if you dig deep enough. There was a Wilco one that I knew of at least, but it seems to be down at the moment.

BitTorrent is like this:

You go to a black market of sorts where a bunch of media pirates hang out. You see one of them is offering a way to get an album you'd like. The problem is, he doesn't actually have the whole thing. He has a few pieces of it. He gives you the location of everyone in the world that has pieces of the album, and you go around asking each of those people for a piece. As you go, you also give out the pieces that you've collected. That's BitTorrent, except the client does all the busywork.

And for finding a shitton of music, OiNK is the best choice. IndieTorrents is good for more obscure stuff. OiNK has such dick rules for quality standards that a lot of bootleg things would never be allowed. IT isn't as strict, but it's also not as popular.
