"In the wake of Modern Guilt and [2006's] The Information, Beck's latest album comes in an almost-forgotten form — twenty songs existing only as individual pieces of sheet music, never before released or recorded," the statement reads, in part. "Complete with full-color, heyday-of-home-play-inspired art for each song and a lavishly produced hardcover carrying case (and, when necessary, ukulele notation), the 'Song Reader' is an experiment in what an album can be at the end of 2012.

"The songs here are as unfailingly exciting as you'd expect from their author," the statement continues. "But if you want to hear 'Do We? We Do,' or 'Don't Act Like Your Heart Isn't Hard,' bringing them to life depends on you."

That's a brilliant idea, and it's not really that musicians-only in an age where you can just import sheet music to a computer program and listen to it that way if you're a huge fan of the artist but have no musical know-how.

I have to say I love this idea, bit of a throwback to when songs would get handed around Greenwich Village and people would be covering each other or hearing about a song before it was ever even recorded.

That's really cool! Music fascinates me. I admit I don't know how to play very well (piano and the tiniest smidgen of guitar) and I'm only 18 so even with the music history I've studied, I've missed a lot simply because I haven't had the time or experience to look into it. I would love if anyone could elaborate more on this sort of history because it's really, really cool to a newbie on the music scene like myself.

it would be their best album. best indie album ever in fact.

but john cage already played out the idea of silence. evidently it's fun to listen to for approximately 4 minutes and 33 seconds and then gets less fun after that.

4 minutes and 34 seconds in people start yawning...worrying about record sales.

i would totally buy a silent album.

people buy silent movies, right?

4'33" is certainly not John Cage's best work but the point is not the relative "silence" of the performer, it's to hear everything else--rustling, coughing, breathing, air conditioning--as music!

how's he going to do this live?

He's going to sell tickets and then not show up, but send all his gear to each tour stop. Fans will then, instead of feeling cheated and revolting, take individual turns on stage recreating their own versions of Beck favorites.
