Americans to which I have vague access! (Colleges)

June 13, 2012 03:37PM | Americans to which I have vague access! (Colleges)
As part of my biology course I should be studying in North America for a year, and now I've got to choose where. At the moment I'm mostly interested in Northern Arizona, and quite interested in Mount Holyoke, even though it's not got that strong a science bent, and no plant focus (which is what I'm tending towards, plants) they seem to run interesting modules I wouldn't get a chance to do here, electron microscopy, computing for biology and so on.

But I wondered if any of you had any experience with any of these universities or their towns, that you might recommend (or the opposite!) them?

(You don't have to be American to weigh in...)

MY COMMENTS IN CAPS.

DONT GO TO ARKANSAS University of Arkansaso(Fayetteville)

ANYTHING IN CALIFORNIA IS GREAT, THOUGH CHICO IS KIND OF OUT THERE AND NOT THE BEST UNIVERSITY ON THIS LIST, IMO. I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT CAL POLY, BUT NICE MG's REFERENCE IN SLO - California Polytechnic State Universityo(San Luis Obispo)
California State Universityo(Chico)

The Catholic University of Americao(Washington, DC)

GREAT SCHOOL AND DC IS AN AWESOME PLACE TO LIVE, CLOSE TO THINGS TO SEE, AND CATHOLIC IS A TOP NOTCH UNIVERSITY . THIS WOULD BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY.

University of Connecticuto(Storrs)

University of Hawai'i at Hilo
Hawai'i Pacific Universityo(Honolulu)

CANT GO WRONG WITH HAWAII, BUT I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THESE SCHOOLS. GREAT PLANT LIFE IN HI THOUGH.

DONT GO TO KANSAS

The University of Kansaso(Lawrence)

Le Moyne Collegeo(Syracuse, NY State)
Louisiana State Universityo(Baton Rouge)

GOOD SCHOOL, MIAMI IS HOT. VERY HOT. NOT CLOSE TO ANYTHING, IT TAKES LIKE A 12 HOUR DRIVE TO GET TO A DIFFERENT STATE AND THEN YOURE IN GEORGIA. University of Miamio(Coral Gables)

University of Michigano(Ann Arbor)

EVERYONE I KNOW WHO WENT THERE LOVES UM AND ANN ARBOR.

DON'T GO TO MISSISSIPPI!! The University of Mississippio(Oxford)

Mount Holyoke Collegeo(South Hadley, Massachusetts)

THIS WOULD BE MY NUMBER 1 RECOMMENDATION. GREAT SCHOOL (WOMAN ONLY, BUT STILL), AND CLOSE TO BOSTON, MARTHA'S VINEYARD, SHORT TRAIN RIDE TO NYC.

University of Mount Uniono(Alliance, Ohio)
University of New Mexicoo(Albuquerque)

GREAT SCHOOL, GREAT TOWN. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Northern Arizona Universityo(Flagstaff)
Old Dominion Universityo(Norfolk, Virginia)

My comments like WC's in all caps--just for a slightly different, more limited, and frequently agreeing perspective:

California Polytechnic State University (San Luis Obispo)
ACADEMICALLY ONE OF THE BEST CSUS, WHICH AREN'T AS GOOD AS THE UCS (UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA) BUT THIS ONE MIGHT AS WELL BE. SLO IS VERY MUCH A COLLEGE TOWN, AND THERE'S NOT MUCH ELSE CLOSE BY, AS IT'S SOMEWHAT ISOLATED. BUT IT IS CLOSE TO THE BEACH AND THE WEATHER IS GOOD.
California State University (Chico)
THIS IS NOT ONE OF THE BETTER CSUS, ACADEMICALLY. IT ALSO HAS A STRONG REPUTATION AS A "PARTY SCHOOL" AND I DON'T PARTICULARLY RECOMMEND IT BASED ON THE GENERAL PERCEPTION OF ITS STUDENT BODY
The Catholic University of America (Washington, DC)
DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE SCHOOL BUT DC IS A TRULY GREAT CITY FOR REALS, PLUS DECENT ACCESS TO THE EASTERN SEABOARD VIA BUSES AND TRAINS, IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CAR
Le Moyne College (Syracuse, NY State)
AGAIN, DON'T REALLY KNOW THE SCHOOL BUT SYRACUSE IS NICE. OUT OF THE WAY FROM MOST THINGS, AND ALSO VERY COLD IN THE WINTERS. BUT UPSTATE NY IS GORGEOUS
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
A BEAUTIFUL SCHOOL IN A BEAUTIFUL LOCATION. NORTH CAROLINA IS SUCH A GREAT STATE, AND THIS SCHOOL IS REALLY GREAT TOO.
Pitzer College (Claremont, near Los Angeles)
PITZER'S A REALLY GREAT SCHOOL, IF YOU WANT TO BE IN CA THIS MIGHT BE THE ONE TO GO TO. CLAREMONT IS A BEAUTIFUL TOWN THAT'S NOT TOO FAR FROM LA BUT NOT TOO CLOSE EITHER (20-40 MINUTE DRIVE, DEPENDING ON TRAFFIC?). PART OF THE CLAREMONT COLLEGES (5 OF EM ALL RIGHT TOGETHER) PIZTER AND HARVEY MUDD TEND TO BE MORE SCIENCE FOCUSED, SCRIPPS, CLAREMONT MCKENNA AND POMONA COLLEGES TEND TO BE MORE LIB ARTS BUT THAT'S A NICE BALANCE.

The only place I can weigh in on is Salt Lake City, or the University of Utah. I've lived in the general area on and off for about 15 years and have mostly enjoyed it. The thing you have to get used to though is the VERY STRONG mormon culture here. It's not quite as prevalent in downtown Salt Lake City, where the UofU is located, but it would still be a culture shock to a newcomer. As far as I know, the U is decent school, though a lot of the students are commuters. I almost went there for my graduate degree, but opted for Colorado State instead. Utah is a great place for outdoorsy people, so if you like hiking, rockclimbing, skiing, water rafting, etc. this is the place for you. Hope that helps!

I know a bunch of folks who went to Holyoke and loved it, and it's probably the most highly-regarded school on your list. Also, fwiw, I went to an all-female high school and have no complaints.

I went to Northern AZ for a semester, and can only say good things about Flagstaff, but the school's a little fratty. I remember being annoyed that none of the itunes networks I could connect to from my dorm room had any good music. BUT, seriously, Flagstaff's on the top 10 littleinsect postgrad job locations list. If you want to hang out in high desert and wander around canyons every weekend, NAU's your gig. I've also heard good things about their bio department from a bio major friend.

I go to Duke, which is like 20 minutes away from UNC Chapel Hill, and there's a lot going on in the area. Great music scene. I don't know much about UNC, but if you have trouble with heat and humidity North Carolina's probably not your place.

Someone else from Utah?

Don't tell Mike3000, he'll scare them away.

I second what Janderson says. Utah is a great place for the outdoors, the school is solid and respected. It's a fun place to live.

1. RAD CARL. This is really useful info, 'cause we have to put 3 choices & I'm tending towards one of the CA places or UNC-CH for 3rd.

Yeah, I went to a girls' secondary also, so I don't think it'd bother me - & skulking around the internet alumni seem to rave about Holyoke, which is attractive.
Flouncing around these days in my Hotel Monte Vista shirt from a 2-day visit some years ago & glad of the reinforcement of Flagstaff as a town (I'm sure a person could get the wrong idea in 48hrs). Heat/humidity knowledge is a useful consideration for me RE:UNC - ta very much for that and all the above, l.i..
