I just finished my undergraduate senior thesis, and am quite proud that i was able to work a tMG quote into the title. The paper is a translation and analysis of "A Monk Does Not Bow Before a King," a fifth century treatise written by the Chinese Buddhist monk, Huiyuan, and, at one point, the treatise makes a parable of wood and fire; i titled it "The Fire That Burns Without Wood: Huiyuan's 'A Monk Does Not Bow Before a King.'" I'm not saying anything about the paper, but i'm pretty proud of the title. With this i finish my undergraduate career.

On that note, i start grad school in the Toronto/Hamilton area come September. Any forum members up there?

(During my 2nd year Philosophy exams, I managed to reference Foghat's Slow Ride in each of the 3 papers. And I once quoted Smog's When The Power Goes Out in a paper on Julius Caesar and the first Triumvirate.)

In my History class last semester I compared Ben Franklin to the laughing Buddha, Andrew Jackson to the Black Knight in Monty Python and I quoted JD Salinger on my paper on Harriet Beecher Stowe and quoted Ted Nugent on my paper about Bleeding Kansas.

I mean what good is writing a paper for school if you cant have some fun?!


But I suppose thats not quite the same thing. Heh.

In High School, i compared Silas Marner (the novel by George Eliot) to 'Mr Nice', the book about drug trafficking by Howard Marks. My teacher loved it, but then she was bats for that sort of 'unconventional' approach to English lessons.

I actually aced that History class.

My husband had the same instructor and mentioned that he never actually reads the papers that were turned into him. So I took that as a challenge and tried to write something that started out as crazy as possible just to see if I could get him to read the whole thing.

At the end of the semester, I asked him if he read them. Judging by his response, I still don't think he did.

Post Hoc Edit: nb. the vehemence of this statement was likely strongly influenced by the 6-ish hours I spent grading papers before coming home and writing this, I now realize.

If you inferred 'plagiarise' from the myriad meanings of 'lift', maybe you can point me towards the place where JD actually cites or references Things Fall Apart, to debunk that possibility. I'm pretty sure the PSOTF...N liner says we'll get "nothing" from him about the song.

working a quote into a song or literary work is a very old and common thing and isn't plagiarism, just felt it needed to be pointed out

Mtn. Girl--I'm not trying to be super harsh on this guy in particular; I don't know him or his situation. But especially in college level classes where papers are a major determinant of the grade, it feels horrifyingly lazy to me if professors to not read the papers. It's something I feel very strongly about, especially because I've heard (and I'm sure others have as well) repeated instances of it happening.

But that's all I have to say about it. Not the point of this thread! Carry on, my apologies.
