Casts, of the Pod Variety

April 18, 2012 05:39PM | Casts, of the Pod Variety
Anyone here know of any podcasts I should check out? Personally I subscribe to a couple from NPR including On Media, It's All Politics and All Things Considered, and I just started subscribing to the All Audio podcasts from The Economist. I'm really looking to try out something new, not just necessarily about news and politics.

*hijacks* Anyone got any biology/general science recommendations for when I can be bothered to restore my iPod and get it talking to my computer again?

I listen to Dan Savage's 'Savage Love' podcast (or Lovecast, whatever it's called). It's about sex, mainly, and i wished i'd listened to it when i was 16.

I've also listened to Point of Inquiry, which is about scepticism generally. It can be a bit fawning at times, but is very interesting.

i've been recommended 'This American Life' as well, but haven't got around to it.

I used to listen to Acorns & Merlot. I don't think they're still around.

Beyond that, all of the NPR podcasts.

I never really got into the things. I didn't have enough room for music on my ipod, let alone extra stuff.

I regularly follow the Bombcast. It's often pretty funny and interesting. Try listening to the first ten minutes or so of the latest episode (April 17th, 2012).

I also follow the more irregular Retronauts podcast.

I'm all about the comic book Podcasts, here are my favorites if you're interested

Comic Geek Speak - very frequent releases, great content, can get overwhelming

Comic Timing - run by my buddy Ian, a great podcast (except for when I'm on it)

Major Spoilers - Updates twice a week, they also have several sub podcasts
Top 5 - Counting down the top 5 in any subject, a subsidiary of Major Spoilers
Critical Hit - Dungeons & Dragons played by the Major Spoilers crew

Coverville - it's a radio show that plays all covers, very well produced!

I listen to a lot of comedy podcasts. Here are some of my favorites.

The Best Show on WFMU - Three hours of mirth, music, and mayhem every week hosted by Tom Scharpling, who tells stories, takes calls, brings in hilarious guests and deals with various colorful residents of Newbridge, New Jersey, voiced by a certain Mountain Goats drummer who will remain nameless. Generally the funniest three hours of any particular week.

Jordan, Jesse, Go! - Two funny guys chat about various topics with a funny guest every week. Very silly, often vulgar.

Superego - Improvised comedy edited down to a half hour of sketches every month. Four guys plus a variety of comedian guests playing bizarre characters.

Doug Loves Movies - Comedian Doug Benson hosts three or four guests each week to talk about movies and play movie-themed games.

WTF with Marc Maron - The best interviews with comedians (and the occasional actor/writer/musician) anywhere.

i also subscribed (paid) to listen to the Ron & Fez show in podcast form. 3 hours a day takes up most of my casual listening time.

Wow thanks for the suggestions! I'm making my way through all these downloads slowly but this weeks episode of Point of Inquiry was fantastic. Thanks Beta.

oooh, i remembered another good one!

Tiki Bar TV! It's a vodcast, and it hasn't been updated since 2009, but there are a good 50 episodes to keep you entertained. It's comedy and mixology (i.e., in their case, near alcoholism) all rolled into a nice little TV show.

We used to have a Tiki Bar night where we'd pick an episode from iTunes shuffle and then try to replicate the featured drink. It always ended badly, because of a lack of proper ingredients.

Basically any NPR program, All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Diane Rehm, On Point, etc etc

They're not politics 24/7 but they're pretty heavy handed with it now.

I would strongly recommend the It's All Politics podcast with Ron Elving from nPr, as Mr. Glass said. Those two guys have got the greatest political memories and lend the sort of analysis to current politics that can only be gained from decades of insight.

i'll listen in and blag my political learnings later.
