my vox ad60 amp is the same sort of deal...solid state, but with tube in the pre-amp? i don't know too much about amps, all i know is it was a good deal and could switch from 1 to 5 to 15 to 30 to 60 watts and sound totally bitchin with it cranked at each setting. plus a bunch of amps modeled which are fun to play with, but the vox models are really the best. has a few effects but i don't use effects too much.
i did have a danelectro daddy o overdrive, one of the three original pedals from the 90's when they first came out. was a nice bruised yellow i stomped on it much. but i don't really use overdrive/distortion pedals anymore, i just crank the amp all the way up.
a 15 watt amp cranked to ten sounds better than a 30 watt amp stuck at 5, you know what i mean?
the 20 watt tube amp i have cranked sounds like led zeppelin. page didn't use any distortion pedals much either i don't think, maybe a fuzz face sometimes? can't remember. hendrix liked pedals for the different colors they'd lend to the guitar sound. i don't think he used distortion pedals, since his amps turned all the way up already provided that effect. but he used fuzz, because i don't think you can make your guitar sound fuzzy by turning the amp all the way up.
i'd use distortion pedals for noise metal, and overdrive pedals are good for people with amps that have too much wattage and they can't turn the daing things all the way up ever.
if you don't have your amp turned all the way up, all the time....i think you've got the wrong amp!
