Guitars

February 22, 2012 03:09AM | Guitars
Hi all,

I am looking for a new brand of guitar to start using as the brand I was using has failed in after sales service. Any suggestions would be appreciated, explorer or les paul style is mainly what I play/collect.

Cheers

what's the best sounding/playing guitar you've ever played cronic?

so far, i have to say, this has been a great guitar for me. p-90 pickups are AWESOME. the only buckers i've ever heard that i've liked were the gibson burstbuckers. they're on a more expensive SG though. you can find one of these for 600-900 bux.

oh, but you don't want gibson brand.....am i understanding that correctly?

Carvin is the way to go -- every time. Steve Vai plays several.

i've never played a carvin guitar, but i do know their amps are well made and pretty much top notch. wouldn't be surprised if all their stuff was.

i'm not a great guitar player, but good enough to know that the neck on the Carvin is really something to talk about. also, one of my close friends, who is one of the best electric guitar players i know, will only play Carvin guitars through Carvin amps, with Carvin effects. And he does some crazy ass shit with that axe.

Hey Mike, At the stage a Modified Jackson Dinky with 81 / 85 EMG for metal and a Legacy Les Paul Copy ( Not sure on pickups - some type of EMG passive) would be my weapon of choice. I always had a soft spot for the Jacksons until Fender took over so there out of the picture now.

I stay away from Gibson as I have heard horror stories ofexpensive guitars falling apart with no after sales service in Australia.

Carvin seem to be on the money, if they play as good as they look I'm ordering one.

What about Jazzmasters, you guys? I own an Epiphone SG modeled bass, which I do love, and I know someone who has that EXACT model of Carvin and LOVES it. You should definitely look into it, cronic. They play very nicely and are super smooth.

i had a jazzmaster, and i sold it. it was a very cool guitar, fender makes good stuff. i just wasn't getting the sounds i wanted out of it. it was white with a gold anodized pickguard. so fucking cool looking. ah well.
February 22, 2012 06:10PM | Re: Guitars
i'll probably be selling the telecaster i bought too. easy playing, very cool looking.....but the pickups just aren't giving me what i want. and i'm a huge silvertone/danelectro fan! (vintage....their new pickups don't get great sounds).

Ah! The Danelectro. Had a friend in high school that had a beautiful seafoam green one. So nice. That Jazzmaster sounds so pretty!

Been a big fan of those old school Rickenbacker's like the one Lennon played (12-string electric, I think?) in lik '64 era Beatles' stuff, (and also Guy Picciotto of Fugazi played, too), for a long time now, but I'm not sure if the single-coil pickup would really compliment my playing style. (Which is, I should say, not being able to play it at all).

I recently bought a Höfner Galaxie reissue. I'm still not sure what to think of it. I'm missing the bite a little bit (but that may be because the other guitarist in my noise rock band is a real bastard when it comes to biting...). The clean sound is beautiful and varied, but basically it's somewhere in between that twangy garage/rock'n'roll/surf sound and that fat, evil metal sound. Neither nor, somehow. They say that that's the beauty of this guitar, but I'm missing something.
But it really looks beautiful, feels wonderful, plays very good, and maybe I just haven't found my sound with it yet.
February 23, 2012 10:55AM | Re: Guitars
i'm a fool for getting rid of some of the guitars i've gotten rid of.

i could have just put better pickups in, and they would have been absolute keepers.

my epiphone sheraton? it just needed some "humbucker sized" p-90's. would have been hot as fuck, as the kids say.

i probably could've even found better sounding jazzmaster pickups.

and for the tele, i could just buy some vintage danelectro pickups and jam them in there.

if you don't like the sound....change the pickups!

(or the amp. what kind of amp are you playing through?)

Hey Mike,

I'm playing this little bitch:

Actually it's a pretty cool sounding amp, ok, no monster like a marshall stack, and my favourite would be some VOX amp, but this small bastard can rock pretty good (and I have it since over 20 years, so that's true love, I guess).

The thing with the Höfner is that it's got staple pick-ups (don't ask me what exactly this is; rather can anybody tell me?), and the internet says that they're somewhere between a humbucker and a single coil pick-up, soundwise. So they don't sound like metal (a touch too little bite), but also not like surf music (a touch too warm). I knew what I was dealing with when I bought it, but it was also a budget question. I just have to find my sound yet, I guess.

But it really sounds beautiful when played clean, it's the first electric guitar I like to listen to clean (normally I say: clean = acoustic guitar).

that amp is a delicious bitch. solid state....how many watts, 80?

never heard of staple pickups, but they seem from your description to be a lot like p-90's to me.

every time i see cronic's username, i want to make a user called bluntman. but then the lazeyness sets in

75, I guess. And loud as hell, without distorting when turned up. I love it. A pretty informed sound guy and guitarist I know once told me the internet says this is the only transistor amp of this size that comes close to a tube amp (whatever this means for me...).

Your not wrong about the pickups turning an average guitat into a keeper, we put James Hetfield EMG60 EMG81 Pickups into a basic EC-10 LTD - turned from basic to a weapon overnight.

Using a Blackstar HT100 with a HTV 412 Cab to annoy the neighbours.

What pedals do the good people of the forum use if any?

Old amps kick ass, they sound awesome and would be a cool thing to collect as we turn into old bastards.

True and just!

BTW, my pedals are a cheap Behringer Blues Overdrive, an old Marshall Guv'nor, an Electro Harmonix Germanium 4 Big Muff Pi (pretty new, has both aseparate overdrive AND distortion), a Danelectro Tuna Melt tremolo and a Cry Baby Wah Wah.
But I don't use them altogether, for my garage punk band it's the Behringer as main distortion, die Guv'nor for boosting the sound during solos and the Dano tremolo.
For my noise band I use the Guv'nor and the Overdrive of the Big Muff (with it's distortion pedal for more pain) and the Wah Wah.

Yes.

transistor vs. tube is bogus.

the beatles AND the velvet underground used solid state amps.

tube amp snobbery didn't start up until oh i forget when.
