Wasting Light by the Foo Fighters is an INCREDIBLY WONDERFUL thing to fill you earholes with!

Completely agreed!

fine, two people here say so, i'll give it a shot.

before, i've always fought the foo.

but no longer.

I know what you're sayin Mike. I used to call the Foo Fighters the Poo Flingers. Mostly because I wasn't a big fan and I felt it was wrong for the Chili Peppers to open for them on a tour I caught a few years back.

I became a fan after I happened upon the middle of the rocdoc called "Back and Forth" where it tells how Wasting LIght was recorded. Straight to tape with no digital wizardry to fix things. All in the comfort of Dave Grohls House. The music seemed as impressive as the process they took to make it so I bought the album. Fell in love with it. Then went back and revisited the oldies I was reluctant to give a decent chance to before.

Songs like this [youtu.be] that can melt faces but I never realized how much.

Now I'm a pretty big fan of theirs. Guess it just took listening to it at the right time with a new set of earholes. If you find yourself liking them, you should check out live at Wimbly. Amazing live show. My daughter and I love watching Tyler play drums. haha

Since then I've spent most of my learning guitar experience with their songs, since my daughter's guitar teacher is a fan as well as my daughter. We've learned Wheel, These Days, Everlong, aaannddd... Gosh I know there's more. Can't think clearly right now. Really would like to focus on Everlong. It's kinda fun to play.

Glad to see I'm not the only FF fan here. I've liked them for a while and got the back and forth doc for christmas. It's pretty awesome. I also think you, Mtn Girl, caught them on a bad tour. I've only seen them play live once and Weezer was opening for them. I was a pretty big Weezer fan at the time and the Foos blew them out of the water.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm completely kicking myself in the ass now for not appreciating it more when I saw them. I'm sure it was a great performance. It's just I've been a Chili Peppers fan since Freaky Styley. I just couldn't understand how they were headlining over them.

I wished with all my heart and upon a star that I couldn't have taken my daughter to see the Wasted Light tour. I checked dates in Charlotte but was never able to swing the cost.

It woulda been great though. I mean with a tour trailer like this one [youtu.be] , how could it not have been? HAHA

How are you enjoying the reissued Floyd?

Anything additional that's actually worth seeking out?

the early album mix is interesting. i NEEDED to hear it....but i'll probably never listen to it again.

the 'us and them' demo with just rick wright playing piano was poignant.

pink floyd was smart. they made all the right decisions it seems like. what to release, what not to release.

I'm kicking myself too, my friend from work went and told me that Bob Mould came out and sang Dear Rosemary with the guys in NJ.

it's so funny you say that. i saw them on that tour, too, as i was (and am) a big Weezer fan. But I walked out of the venue thinking, wow, the Foo Fighters totally blew Weezer out of the water.

edit - that being said, i still prefer Weezer's recorded music to Foo Fighters any day of the week.

I saw Foo Fighters supporting The Prodigy in Manchester in '97. The Color & The Shape was not long out and the Foos were pretty ace, but I just remember Grohl spitting on the stage more than was really necessary.

Prodigy were at the height of their powers though and blew them away.

That's all. Thanks for listening.

My favourite Led Zep album (and the first one I bought decades ago) is "Physical Graffiti". It's born the same year as me, just about a month earlier.

But for today it's this:

(Bonnie Billy & The Marquis de Tren, "Get On Jolly"winking smiley

By the way, did anyone ever notice how incredibly beautiful the lyrics to the BPB&Marquis song "64" are? No? Ok, I'll post them:

Quote
Bonnie Billy & The Marquis de Tren
On the slope of the creek, I asked her
Where are you going hiding your flashlight with your coat ?
My house is all dark and lonesome, lend me that light !
She raised her dark eyes for a moment and looked at my face through the dusk
I have come to the creek, she said, to shine my flashlight on the animals in the water when it gets dark

It got darker, and I asked again if she would bring her light to my house
As there were no animals in the water. There was nothing living moving
She said, I'm going to shine it on the sky ; eventually it will reach a star
I watched her shine the light uselessly into the sky

In the moonless gloom of midnight I asked her why she still held the light close to her chest
My house is all dark and lonesome, I said. Lend me your light
I need it to walk home with, she said. I can't see in the dark like a cat
I watched her light get lost among the trees and into the lights of houses

And here's the original by Rabindranath Tagore, slightly different:

Quote
Rabindranath Tagore
On the slope of the desolate river among tall grasses I asked her, "Maiden, where do you go shading your lamp with your mantle ? My house is all dark and lonesome – lend me your light !" She raised her dark eyes for a moment and looked at my face through the dusk. "I have come to the river," she said, "to float my lamp on the stream when the daylight wanes in the west." I stood alone among tall grasses and watched the timid flame of her lamp uselessly drifting in the tide.
In the silence of gathering night I asked her, "Maiden, your lights are all lit — then where do you go with your lamp ? My house is all dark and lonesome — lend me your light." She raised her dark eyes on my face and stood for a moment doubtful. "I have come," she said at last, "to dedicate my lamp to the sky." I stood and watched her light uselessly burning in the void.
In the moonless gloom of midnight I ask her, "Maiden, what is your quest, holding the lamp near your heart ? My house is all dark and lonesome — lend me your light." She stopped for a minute and thought and gazed at my face in the dark. "I have brought my light," she said, "to join the carnival of lamps." I stood and watched her little lamp uselessly lost among lights.

It's been in my head for days now.

Physical Graffitti is excellent. Let down by the imbalance of the 2 (or 4, i guess) sides, and some of the weirder shit like Down by the Seaside.

Whenever "Here's Your Future" is over I get really disappointed and feel tempted to go back and play it again but then "I Might Need You To Kill" comes on and everything is just alright.

i remember liking this album, and thinking the lyrics were terrific.

northwest band, IIRC?
April 19, 2012 03:47PM | Re: What is you listenin' TOOZ
Ha yes they are from Portland, you remember correctly.

And the lyrics are terrific. I still haven't succeeded in finishing a top albums list, but I remember that it was in my top ten somewhere.
April 19, 2012 08:48PM | Re: What is you listenin' TOOZ
i became a fan of the band because of this one... my father put it on when i was a kid in some car he owned at one time in space and life...that piano riff...

he had me listen to the band's 2nd album, and the doors greatest hits, and from then i checked out whatever he said was good. if you know neutral milk hotel, but you don't know the band? you're fucked.

i didn't know the color "brown" until i knew the band.

led zeppelin and the velvet underground were cool band names until i heard of the band.

the band made me think, dylan's not the king.

RIP levon. we'll see you soon.
