at some point in your life, YOU check out. and you take/keep nothing with you.
if you stole a cracker, and the earth explodes, does that cracker not go back to from whence it came?
atoms and energy twirling, twirling towards freedom?

As John Maynard Keynes said, "The long run is a misleading guide to current affairs. In the long run we are all dead."

he sounds a little short sighted.

but otherwise, spot on!

January 25, 2012 12:24PM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
these are the releases that i would have bought and kept, from 2007-2011. i actually did buy two of these. the others i got from the library.

Quote

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
DJ Spooky - Creation Rebel
White Stripes - Icky Thump
Beck - Modern Guilt
She & Him - Volume One
We're From Japan - Now Breathe
Bob Dylan - Christmas In The Heart
Frank Zappa - The Lumpy Money Project
Regina Spektor - Far
Wavves - Wavvves
Earl Sweatshirt - Earl
Jimi Hendrix - Valleys Of Neptune
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Robyn - Body Talk, Part 1-3
Beach Boys - Smile Sessions Box
Leon Russell - Live In Japan
Tyler The Creator - Goblin

i could probably make another list of about the same size that would comprise impulse buys that i would have bought, then donated to the library.

as an aside from the d/l argument, which i think we've maybe saturated, i'm amazed that there's been so few albums released in the last four years you've loved a lot.

i think this is a very exciting time for music for me, because there's been so much coming out, in so many different ways and mediums that i feel spoiled for choice at times!

name me some that i should have loved from those years and i may reassess! winking smiley
January 25, 2012 06:06PM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
Tallest Man on Earth - Wild Hunt
Japandroids - Post/Nothing
Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
Fang Island - Fang Island
Allo Darlin - Allo Darlin
Anais Mitchell - Hadestown
MGMT - ORacular Spectacular
The National - Boxer
Frightened Rabbit - Midnight Organ Fight
Hold Steady - Stay Positive
tMG
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Los Campesinos - We Are Beautiful, We are Doomed
Pains of Being Pure At Heart - Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Kyte - Science for the Living
Thrushes - Night Falls
Tiny Vipers - Eyes Like Ours
GIRLS - couple o' things they've had out
Pree - Chopping Block
Les Savy Fav - Root for Ruin
Everything Everything - Man Alive
Giraffes? Giraffes! - Pink Magick

highlights off the top of my MediaMonkey, so i've missed a hell of a lot because i've streamed a lot from sites etc. They all interested me at the time, and still do now, so hopefully you could find a few. I have no idea what you dig, though, so it could all be dull as hell to you!

edit: also, 2007 takes in my last years at Uni so my approach to music (as always) is intrinsically linked to where i was and how i was at the time. Some may find my choices dull, but trying telling that to my madly dancing 22 year old self!

Also, regarding album prices, there is a documentary called 'I Need That Record' that touches on that very subject with some crazy awesome stats. (I like stats). You can stream it on Netflix. Its really worth watching, imo.

i've heard five of those albums you mentioned beta. i did not love those five. can't even remember any songs off them, actually. nothing stuck whatsoever. it's why i would never buy an indie album without listening to everybody's favorite song first. i'd probably still think it was blah suckiness.

i heard:

titus andronicus
mgmt
the national
hold steady
fleet foxes
pains of being blah blah blah

very tired of the indie genre. is apples in stereo indie? they had one a couple years ago that i liked. wavves is indie, yeah? LOVED that one.

otherwise, name me one song from that list that i can youtube and i'll check it out.

did not include mountain goats on my list. i bought their records, black pear tree, satanic messiah, life of the world to come. didn't love any of them. did not buy heretic pride, though i've come to like a handful of songs on there. did not buy all eternals deck. those two were library listens, as was that other one with the bruno guy, and the one with the van slice guy. there might have been others, i don't know. the only song i can remember from all eternals deck is "genesis" and nobody here liked that song.

Just for the rekkid, I dont think Frightened Rabbit has that typical indie sound/feel. Could be the guys Scottish (Irish?) accent, idk. But I felt their sound to be more unique than your typical posterchild indie group.

Cuz I too have grown weary of the indie.

thank you, i'll try those songs tomorrow!

it's not entirely "indie's" fault i guess.

they're not supposed to have hits (a.k.a. good songs)!

Titus Andronicus aren't indie.

Check out either 'A More Perfect Union', 'A Pot in which to Piss' or 'Theme from Cheers'. That album flows pretty well though, and has recurring themes so I’d advise checking the whole thing out.

Tallest Man on Earth isn’t indie, either, so scope out King of Spain if you like.

Thing is, if you tire of indie then I can’t offer you much. I think indie is such a broad genre, and so I’m nowhere near tired of it, and I’ve probably only scratched the surface of it. I mean, the definition of ‘indie’ these days covers a whole raft of sub-genres that get lumped with ‘indie’ because it’s easy to classify.

@Mtn. Girl: Frightened Rabbit are Scottish and yes, that album is good. Listened to it a hell of a lot when I was feeling shitty about relationships.

if the album doesn't have hits i call it indie.

i'll def check out the songs you mention, but i've been burned too many times by these "non-indie" albums with indie aesthetics.

eta: i guess i'm being dumb. wouldn't be a stretch.

i guess i can't handle indie albums anymore that don't have songs that punch me in the groin the way mountain goats songs have. dozens of great, great songs. half a dozen great, great albums. perhaps i was spoiled.

maybe it's the mountain goats that aren't indie.

indie aint no genre guys! (the more you know)
anyway, it literally means it was made independently of a label.
it has unfortunately developed connotations of hipster girlymen with acoustics and a raging falsetto.
January 27, 2012 04:39AM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
it used to mean that. I think it has developed into a cover-all genre nowadays, but a very broad one.

mike, if ever i'm in the states, i'll bring some records to your house and we can listen to them. At some point during, i'll punch you in the groin, and you can learn to love again!

like pavlov's dog, but with a soundtrack.

That's like saying "emo" refers only to a specific type of post-hardcore that existed before people who listen to what is generally referred to as "emo" were even born. I mean to say, saying what you said is like saying the emo thing in the sense that it is no longer a viable argument. The words have come to mean what they have come to mean, so yes, like "emo" which we've long since all (collective "all" not necessarily including anyone specific) agreed to grudgingly agree on, "indie" is a poorly defined style that bares only some passing resemblance to something that was referred to with such epithets ten to twenty years ago.

And to be fair, the term "indie music" or "indie rock" was never meant to specifically imply something made independently of a label... it was used to refer to things released on so-called independent labels. Some of these albums were probably bankrolled by the label and others were produced independently and then brought to the label for release.

Well said, and I couldn't agree anymore! This is such a hobby horse for me, and also a major pet peeve, but you hit the nail on the head. Yay!

You're educating the choir, man. To be fair though, it probably hasn't meant something as strict as what you're talking about since 1997 or something, so...
