Megaupload SHUT DOWN

January 23, 2012 08:39PM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
see, i'm just a listener. i listen to it all, and keep none of it. i buy what i love.

make cd's 5 dollars, and i would probably also buy what i like.

make it cheap enough, i may even buy stuff i hate.

donate those to the liberry at the end of the year!

as it is, i think the world's a way better place than it used to be. people will buy art because it's good. not because of who the artist is, what they did, or what the single sounds like.

they will listen, they will either like it and buy, or not like it and don't buy.

welcome to thunderdome!

why 5 dollars, may i ask?

I was really hoping the thread would derail and become a Fugazi thread at the mention of this. Must be honest.

I would suggest you're in a minority in that you bother to buy what you love. Most people, in my interwebs experience, take the attitude that d/ling is just the best way to get music, and fuck those who make it getting anything. Knocking the price down wouldn't make a difference for them, but i'll concede that you're right if you can reduce the numbers pirating then it may be easier to manage.

If a CD were 5 dollars, would you still d/l to listen to it first before you bought it? Or would you just take the risk?

January 24, 2012 10:10AM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
before you think anything, ask me what i've loved in the past 5 years.

if cd's were 5 bux, instead of d/l'ing a whole album to listen to, i would probably take more chances, NOT listen to previews on the net, just read about certain bands....and then make a day of it like i used to. go shopping, you know, to a store, a building that has racks of cd's. grab this one here. oh that, sweet. gotta have this one too. ah damn, this thing's only a buck? grabbin that.

and anything i didn't like i'd donate to the liberry. write that sucker off.

for me it's not about the product. i could care less about holding something in my hand. i wanna listen, and then stop listening. albums i wanna hear more than once i have on hand right now. and even they are now dwindling.

i would take chances on a 5 dollar cd, because that's exciting, and adds to the experience. people used to wait for albums from their fave artists then go get the album on release day and go home and listen to the album, yada. i like reading about a band, then giving them a try. i'd be more likely to make it less of a computery experience if i could go to a store and buy their album for 5 bux. i'm a list maker. i enjoy making lists.

the library has really spoiled me though. nothing i can't find there. i've got cards in two counties. nothing, absolutely nothing i can't find there. i'd say half the time the library's got what i want immediately. the library is, in fact, not very different from the internet. you don't keep that shit, or you don't get to get stuff from the liberry anymore!

i just keep ramblin and ramblin.
January 24, 2012 10:17AM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
I agree with you, but i think you're in the minority. Yeah, sure, if CDs were cheaper i'd take more risks and i think many people would, but i would still wager that the majority would continue to d/l because it's still cheaper.

People (land of huge generalisations ahoy!) don't seem to care about the fact they're d/ling shit loads of music and not paying for it. It's a victimless crime in a lot of people's eyes and i wonder if the cost argument is trotted out because it's an easy one to try to justify the activity,

I'm speculating, of course i am.

Aren't we all, though?

Also, even though i suspect i know the answer (nothing), what have you loved in the past five years?

i think the main point i'd like to make is this, up there.

it's not about money or ease of access or stealing or whatever.

it's about making something i want to buy.

i wanted multiple copies of the sunset tree because i liked it so fucking much i, for some reason, needed the cd, the record, the DEMO record, the d/l for my mp3 player, went to a few concerts, etc.

when i like something that much, i get my wallet out.

it's not about artist worship where i MUST BUY everything a certain artist creates. i heard the sunset tree from the library and started throwing money at jd. he deserved it.

it's not about GENERATION Y GUILT.

i coined this phrase just now. i will patent it and copyright it soon. the end.

it's about buying what i love.

and i guess in that case, price is not a factor.

but i do like the artist, and he has a million back albums i wanna listen to that he probably wants me to buy. but they're all dozens of dollars so no can do. i'll sample them, and if i love them, i will buy them.

something like that. jesus, i just ramble ramble ramble this morning.

i've liked quite a bit. i've definitely bought cd's in the past 5 years. i'll make a list of stuff that i probably would have bought if cd's were 5 bux.

and so what if i'm in the minority! don't you marginalize me baby! i'm a t-rex!

have you heard the above album, beta? if not, it's one to buy, i shit you not. yeah it has a hit, but the rest of the songs are so fuckin bitchin.

check this.

i think, in my opinion, based on my own experience....

people d/l music because they've been burned by way too many expensive cd's with bogus music on it. hype a band up, get generation x or y all excited about buying something, then bam, it's fucking bullshit. who's to blame? the hypemachine? or the sub standard product.

i say, sub-standard product drives downloading.

i want a list of stuff YOU'VE loved in the past five years. desert island shit now. maybe i'll make my list so you'll see what i mean.
January 24, 2012 10:27AM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
and the cost deal comes trotting out because cd's cost way too much. period. end of story.
January 24, 2012 10:39AM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
how about this, disregard all the rest.

should people buy what they don't like? if they have a chance to test drive, and they don't like the car....do they have to buy it because if they don't then the car dealer doesn't put food on his table?

me?

i MUST buy what i love, because i fucking have to have it.
January 24, 2012 10:40AM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
there was an article buy a dude whose name escapes me, in which he argued that CDs should actually be a solitary english pound and people would buy more as a result. Instead of selling a few at a high price, it was the opposite business model. Maybe you and him (and others) are right, after all. The debate needs to be had, and it needs to be had quickly before they get a hold of horny-bizzos.com.

But shit, man, five years is a long time and takes me back to Uni when i loved pretty much whatever i was dancing to at the time. Can we include consistent loves, or are we only allowed new thrills that began in the last five years?

edit: your last post - no, not at all, which is why i've no beef with people listening in store, or d/ling, or streaming providing that, if they do like it, they buy it; if they don't, they get rid.

i'm going to list albums from 2007-2011 that i would have bought if they were five dollars.

probly tomorrow.
January 24, 2012 05:02PM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
you probably have no beef with people getting an album at the library, listening to it, then returning it to from whence it came.

to me, the internet is just a giant version of that. a giant library. i will get something to listen to, listen to it, then fucking hit delete on that sumbitch when i don't love it as much as led zeppelin ii or dark side of the moon. (which i have bought multiple copies of)

that's not what everybody does?

becuz, there's too much out there in the fricken world to listen to besides something you grabbed and didn't love.

that's hoarding, and i've seen that tv show.

it's not good.
January 24, 2012 05:12PM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
i'm gonna get meta now, get down with me.

each library has a different amount of time set for when to return the shit you check out.

one county is two weeks.

another county is a month.

what about borrowing from a friend?

what about borrowing from a bank?

what about...........borrowing from the internet?

at some point in your life, YOU check out. and you take/keep nothing with you.

if you stole a cracker, and the earth explodes, does that cracker not go back to from whence it came?

atoms and energy twirling, twirling towards freedom?

isn't everything you do a form of worship to god?

does god not understand everything?

because i think god does.

and god told me that if cd's were 5 dollars......

well, aside from the fact there is no god, your point is a good one but again hinges on this point:

it's when people don't hit delete that i think is wrong.

edit: i'm not sure i want to be right either, my man, but i do love a good argument.

first, it's not a fact if you can't back it up with data.

second, there's no "delete" police.

the existence of god, any deity really, can never be a fact.

the moment god is fact is the moment belief ceases; and therefore god ceases to exist.

see what i mean?
January 24, 2012 06:03PM | Re: Megaupload SHUT DOWN
there's really no arguing.

we're all the god of our own lives.

we're aeons old.

when we return to from whence we came, we'll be perfect.

and what god doesn't love perfection?

carry on.
