Forum Project: Topic Trading compilation

July 01, 2011 03:04AM | Forum Project: Topic Trading compilation
In April I proposed an idea for a new forum project, and a good amount of people seemed interested, so here it goes.

Since the Mountain Goats forum community is full of musically talented individuals, this is an opportunity to create completely original material that I will collect and eventually distribute into a free-download compilation.

THE RULES:
When signing up for the compilation, you submit a topic/theme for a song. This theme can be anything as long as it's fairly appropriate. It can be simple like "toasters" or oddly specific like "Charlie Sheen tap dancing on Mount Kilimanjaro." After the final sign up date (let's make it 7/18), I'll put all of the song themes in a hat and randomly assign one to each member/artist. Everyone would then proceed to write a song at least loosely related to the theme they were given.

If you wish to sign up, just send an email to me abudabuba(at)yahoo.com by 7/18 with your
1. Forum name
2. Artist name
3. Topic

Happy playing, everyone!

EDIT: TOPICS HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED! See my post below near the bottom of this page!

I really want to do this but I can only write lyrics since I have no real musical talent, and I'm not in a band, so I would need to find someone to help me with that. sad smiley

edit: Ok, decided to sign up. I like how encouraging the people of this forum are. smiling smiley

Indeed. "The Smith Family Are Sorry You Had To Hear This" has some of the most intriguing tracks on the other forum compilations (such as their take on The Oceanographer's Choice), and there's virtually no music at all.

A couple of things.

I think I'd be interested. I've been really busy lately but I am setting aside more of my free time for music making and listening these days so I will probably send you an email soon.

Additionally, if you need any help in distribution, I can put the finished compilation up on the revolving spleen netlabel on archive.org I just set up (obviously in addition to anyone's plans to put it up on a more traditional website, or any other methods). Since it will be free, I can totally post about it on the revolving spleen main page as well. Not trying to co-opt your project, but I can offer some assistance. Of course, if you don't want this available to the general public, that's cool too, but I just imagine that most people here would love some more free promotion.

Actually, I was planning on asking you if you wanted to release it when it got further down the pipeline. I had no fancy idea on where to put the release, so I could just send the files to you and you could release them on Revolving Spleen's achrive.org netlabel if you want. I was planning it to be public, as a way of promotion each other while also promoting ourselves. The more people that hear it the better!

No pressure, of course.

Oh, and is it (initially) secret who requested which topic?

I was thinking of keeping it a secret until the actual release. Unless the person who requested the topic wanted to spill the beans, I guess.

I want to construct an 'Irish pronunciation of 'film'' connection for you, but I can't quite work out how to do it.

Do we get our topics today or tomorrow? I thought it was today but I see at the top it says today is the cut-off to sign up.

I am just about to do it, since I haven't gotten any people signing up for the past few days.

I placed everyone's name in a list in order of who signed up first (with me at the end) and then threw all of the topics into this list randomizer. The order of the randomized topics was then matched with the list of forum members.

This is what the almighty list randomizer assigned:

EvilEivind: Leopold Bloom's Cat

Butter: Getting drunk on a rollercoaster

Gaius Verres: A unicorn stole my lover

Dollabill: A child playing in the play area of a Payday Loans shop in Kilburn, North London.

Dtrom4: Njal's Saga (specifically, the burning of Njal). Of, if they prefer, they can go with Njorl's Saga.

Jamison: Swiss cheese

Darkshines: Mark's face is a butt

LearningHowToBreathe: Rainbows

El Nombre: The 19th Chess Olympiad, which took place in September 1970 in Siegen, West Germany

StatusFrustratio (whom is doing the album artwork): Ginga Nagareboshi Gin

Finnstinky: Mud

SlowWestVulture: the planet Mars
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I find the one I was assigned hilarious, as my band is currently working on a sci-fi themed album. Good luck everyone! How does September 18th sound for the due date? That gives you two months to write, record, and mix the song.
