*Doctor Who

April 13, 2011 09:52AM | *Doctor Who
I waited for 7+ hours on Monday the 11th in New York to see the premire of the first two episodes of this season and a Q & A with the cast & crew. My sister and I were the last two people let in the theater before they stopped the line. Was anyone else from the board there? Anyone else here like Dr Who?

I didn't like Dr Who at all but my sister is obsessed. I had watched a couple of the episodes back in Season 1 of the reboot and wasn't impressed. From Friday after work to Sunday night we had watched the whole 5th season together and I really like this new doctor and the rest of the cast. I really went as a favor to her but ended up enjoying myself.

he's one of the few men who's written more books than he's read. A true hero.

Doctor Who is a lot better now that Steven Moffat is the lead writer. Though Russel T. Davies's scripts were occasionally rescued from mediocrity by David Tennant's outstanding acting, on the whole the past seasons have been hugely hit and miss (with most of the hits going to Moffat -- anyone new to the series should watch 'Blink' from the third season).

Basically, Doctor Who is like the perfect glass of orange juice -- it has to be a little pulpy or else it's just anaemic orangey sugar water. If you can tolerate the absolutely dorky moments, then it's a lot of fun to watch.

Also feel somewhat obligated to join in on the love for Garth Marenghi (author dreamweaver visionary etc)

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to look into more of Moffat's episodes. Other people mentioned that he writes the new Sherlock series and wrote Coupling. I heard great things about the first couple seasons of Sherlock and bad things about Coupling. Moffat had a great quote from the Q&A afterwards when asked about the similarities between Dr Who and Sherlock. "Sherlock Holmes is a human trying to be a god. Dr Who is a god trying to be human."

David Tennant was the best of the new doctors, but my favorite will always be Tom Baker.

I try not to compare old Who and new Who. They're two completely different animals

Yeah, David was great. He really grew into the role and made it his own. It was sad to see him go, but I like Matt Smith better by the minute

Wow thanks for that link! Sorry for double posting everyone but am a recent convert as of 4/8 and just had my head filled with season 5 & the first two of 6. By the way you guys, the new baddies are creeeeeeeeeeepy.

When Dr Who first came to Netflix streaming, I decided to check it out with all of my friends raving about the show. I started at "season 1" which is the Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper stuff. The episodes were monster of the week style and there was nothing grabbing me and wanting me to come back. Plus I had already started to hate Pipers character so I stopped after watching 4 episodes.

I can't wait till the new season starts so we can all talk about the new episodes. This current cast is pretty great, River Song and Amy Pond are really strong female characters and you don't find that alot in scifi shows. I really like the new doctor and am pretty sure he'll be my favorite when all is said and done.

i for one love "doctor who." i absolutely recommend starting with the 2005 Kit Eccleston series and becoming gradually overwhelmed by the very concept of the show. this is to say nothing of Eccleston (9), David Tennant (10), and now Matt Smith's very different portrayals of the time lord.

one of my favourite moments of this winter occurred when i happened to be watching an episode on bbc america, and this came up on my twitter feed.

i recently finished an art-piece based on the eleventh doctor and his preoccupation with wearing a fez. i decided sort of randomly that i wanted to use it to make 5000 people smile, but my efforts haven't gotten it yet but just past 50 views. if any of you are doctor fanatics and can help me share it, i'd appreciate it quite personally. there's an essay beneath the piece that goes into a little detail about the whole thing.

further, i actually hope this thread gets some traction; the new season starts this saturday, 23 april, and i've been looking forward to it for such a long time.

edit: maybe the starter of this thread could retitle it "Doctor Who 2011" to differentiate. i know there's an old thread, but there are multiple threads on everything on this forum. let's just let the old conversation lie and continue a new one here!
