I disliked most of FP and can't stand controllersphere. Too bad. Hissing Fauna will always be one of my favorite records.
HISSING FAUNA IS SOOOOO GOOD!
May 14, 2011 04:18PM | Re: Vinyl
Hissing Fauna is great, but Skeletal Lamping was my favorite. False Priest was a close third to Hissing Fauna. I can't rank the controllerspehre, because I still haven't heard it, but I like Black Lion Massacre.

Okay, I got to hear thecontrollersphere. It's kind of all over the place musically, but thematically and lyrically it's a very interesting album.

In addition to thecontrollersphere, I've also added these to my collection:

Casiokids - Topp stemning på lokal bar (purple vinyl)
STRFKR - Reptilians (black, unfortunately. They were sold out of clear...)
James Husband - A Parallax I (Pink vinyl)
Asobi Sesku - Transparence (Clear 10"winking smiley
Hunx and His Punx - Too Young to Be In Love (also black, because they were sold out of pink.)

Also, can I just say that I love polyvinyl for letting me download stuff before it actually comes in the mail? It's a beautiful thing.

thecontrollorsphere on baby blue vinyl is beautiful, and "Slave Translator" kicks like a mule. That is all.
No, wait. My review of their show last week went up today: [blog.kexp.org]

April 02, 2012 09:30PM | Re: Vinyl
I got my income tax back and went on a shopping spree.

My new shiznit:

Decibully - Sing Out America! (white vinyl)
Harlem - Hippies
JoJo NewNew - Have One On Me
John Vanderslice - Romanian Names
Les Chauds Lapins - Parlez-Moi D'amour
of Montreal - Paralytic Stalks (yellow vinyl)
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
Sticks and Stones - nineteeneightyseven (S/S white vinyl w/ etch)
Scout Niblett - The Calcination of Scout Niblett
Princess Chelsea - Lil Golden Book (gold vinyl)
Fielded - Terrageist
Fielded - White Death 7"
Kim Boekbinder and Amanda Palmer - Such Great Heights 7" (Ltd. Lavender vinyl)
The Lovely Eggs - Cob Dominos (Ltd. 12" LP)
The Lovely Eggs - FUCK IT! 7"
The Lovely Eggs - Panic Plants 7"

I might buy myself a new turntable for my birthday. I really want the Denon DP-300F. I have terrible hand tremors, and that model has an automatic start feature. Press a button, and the needle goes to the record on its own. No need for me to worry about scratching my albums.
April 22, 2012 07:44PM | Re: Vinyl
I have about 200 pieces now. Favorites are my MCB set, my new Afrika Bambaataa/MC5 split (no fucking way this baby is getting opened), and my partially unopened AED signed by JD.

I'd be willing to part with some cash for that Flaming Lips/Mastodon split, Mclusky Does Dallas, or The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.

...How is something partially unopened? Seems like an either it is or isn't thing to me.
April 23, 2012 12:43AM | Re: Vinyl
quite the existential question, can something be partly unopened, or does opening a portion of it cause the entire entity to be considered opened? initially one would think that the act of opening would result in it being opened, but let us ponder it on a molecular level for a bit, the individual atoms and molecules that are exposed are definitly opened, but do molecular bonds neccarily transfer nonmolecular properties to other chunks of matter that are actually still covered by some remnants of plastic.
April 23, 2012 01:07AM | Re: Vinyl
Part of the plastic on the front of the album was removed in order for JD to sign it, but the majority of the original wrapping is intact. The album has never been removed from the sleeve, and the plastic on the side prevents it from ever falling out. Therefore, I consider it partially unopened. It's half a virgin, so to speak.

(Edited for coherence because Jesus Christ I'm tired and should get off the internet.)

Yeah, my previous post was, um, not exactly profound (or grammatically correct), to say the least. I've edited it for coherence and clarity.

More importantly, if they aren't opened, how do you play them?

QFT.

eta: the Franklin Bruno/Human Hearts stuff arrived in the post this weekend so throw that onto my paltry collection. Plus the new Allo Darlin LP.

I don't. They're best left in the original packaging. I'm going to open and play the majority of my RSD haul (actually, probably everything except Kick Out the Jams and the Atmosphere/Uncluded Picture Disc), but there are certain items I can't bring myself to open for fear of somehow damaging them. Tebowie wouldn't get played if I didn't like that damned B-side so much.

I've never been clear on the meaning of QFT. Quite Fucking True? Quick, Free Turtles? Quentin Forever Tarantino?

Aye, I sometimes leave the free downloads in their original .zips and .rars too. ;-)

Someone stopped me in Brixton and asked me wasn't I scared to have my camera around my neck, scared that someone'll steal it? No - having a camera in the bottom of my bag that I never take any pictures with out of fear it'll get stolen or rained on, that's scary.

Heh, good zinger. You make a fair point about free downloads. Admittedly, that slipped my mind. The Atmosphere picture disc has a download card, so I'll be carefully opening that one. No point in owning music I can't hear.

I already have digital AED from the download code in one of my other copies, and I can listen to either version of Jams whenever I want on Spotify, so those are non-issues.

I don't want to be the guy who scorns the way someone else chooses to collect records, as that is not cool...

but...

have you never even seen or held some of the discs you own? I cannot compute that in my mind. confused smiley

You have a blue AED, right? Please, please tell me you've looked at it, felt it in your hands, held it up to the light and marvelled at the deepest, nicest blue with the little maroon centre and thought "yes, these colours look good."

I'm reminded of the line about Charles Saatchi not having an art collection, just stock.

I had a blue AED, which I traded to Wild Creature for a complete MCB set, but before trading it away, I did exactly that. I have a clear AED, which is open and has been played, and the same goes for my purple TLOTWTC. I can see the Afrika Bambaataa/MC5 anytime I want, because the packaging is clear. The colors do indeed look magnificent.
