WC...if that was directed to me, then I appreciate it and I miss twitter (which i quit) and how we cheered together for Inglorious Basterds at the oscars last year...but my name is Evan. Colin is acowkickedme. If it wasn't directed to me...well, it's nice to be back again anyway.

vinyl isn't meant to last forever. neither are cd's or cassettes or 8 tracks. it's true, that the second time you play a record, it's not going to be as good quality as listening the first time. frightening, isn't it!

regardless of the type of machine, or cartridge, the temporariness of a record should be enjoyed with the least amount of hassle. if the record player at goodwill plays records and has speakers, by all means, get it.

belt drive, direct drive, bose speakers, adamantium needles...my record player plays records, and they're all scratchy and poppy like records sound like.....not clean and pristine like cd's, you might as well be listening to a cd! anyway i've got mp3's or cd's if they get too scratchy.

This actually makes a lot of sense to me.

I don't want to get a player that mangles something I paid good money for, but I'm not going to drop a couple hundred bucks on a player, either. Truth be told I probably wouldn't even listen to the album in record format often, unless I find out I've got got a huge jolly for the way that vinyl sounds. Most of the time that I'm listening to music, I'm on the go or at my computer and so I spend more time with an MP3 player or WMP/iTunes than anything else. Physical format music is more for when I have company--i.e. never because I'm a ghastly freaking hermit--or when I'm binge cleaning and need to hear my music from every corner of the house.

One thing I will say is that no one in this podunk town sells anything I'm looking to buy ever; therefor I buy online and therefor I can search out much more specific models. Anyone got a good suggest for a player that's not going to cost me half a month's rent?
February 26, 2011 09:13PM | Re: Vinyl
i'm an mp3 person, all the way, but also a vinyl collector. the main draw of vinyl is to be able to have a physical manifestation of the albums. the important part is the music, and i can take mp3s anywhere. i can't take my records everywhere, but i know they're at home and i've paid the money for them and supported artists. if i want to reference liner notes, they're there. the artwork is phenomenal and hugely superior to CDs. vinyl is much sexier than a file that really bears no difference from iexplore.exe other than it plays music when i click on it.

i'm not an audiophile and don't really distinguish a great difference between analog and digital. being a little bit of a music snob, i realize the cred points i'm sacrificing here, but i'm also gonna be up-front and truthful, haha.

weshallallbe, that's a great list, and i thoroughly encourage you to never allow your address to be known to me, because i want those bootleg series LPs in a bad way. those reggie records are also on my 'to be purchased, probably for much more than they are reasonably worth' list.

my list:

So let me get this straight, weshallallbe is really acowkickedme, and acowkickedme is really Evan, and Evan is really Colin, so therefore, weshallbe is really the singer of The Decemeberists.
February 27, 2011 12:16PM | Re: Vinyl
While I love The Decemberists, I'm not Colin. I'm Evan.

Nutopia- vinylcollective.proboards.com

Do a search on Reggie. Someone was selling Promotional Copy and (I think) Greatest Hits for under $20 each. Also I just sold my bootleg series 5 box set. Never listened to it and never wanted to. Probably gonna use the money to buy the whitmark demos.

EDIT: Nutopia...sent you a message on DF.

or i guess even a not scratched vinyl beck sea change would do it.

damn. Sold my Loveless a couple of weeks ago and would have loved to pick up a SM for a friend...oh well.

ps-pretty sure Sea Change is gonna set you back more than TLotWtC on purple. Just saying.
March 04, 2011 12:18PM | Re: Vinyl
Mmm... Beck's Sea Change on vinyl would be devine. Even though I mostly listen to that one in my car, it'd still be a great one to own on vinyl.

hm. you're probably right. my life of the world to come has only been played once and is limited to 777. whereas beck sea change has been around for 9 years, probably/definitely been played more than once, and i'm not aware that it was limited edition in anyway...i assume there's lots more out there than life of the world. plus, a mountain goats fan has heard sea change a million times and wants my purple. and i ain't out to make a buck or investment or anything. i'm gonna play any record i get until it's worthless. heard the satanic messiah once, and the come come to the sunset tree once as well.

I'm not out to offend and I know you're not out to make a buck. Sea Change didn't have a particularly large run, and goes for around $40. Purple TLotWtC? Well...doesn't go for as much. Just putting that out there. Both sound great on vinyl. Maybe someone here will take you up on your offer. Wasn't trying to upset anyone.

nah, yer fine. i think ebay sells purples for 30. seems like that's a fair price for a limited double album? i dunno. it's just a trade that probably won't be made anyway.

i think the beck is worth 40 or so. 50 in super bad ass shape.

but i don't know anything about records. i just wanna hear some stuff on vinyl that i never have.

would actually rather hear the "wavvves" on vinyl more, since i've heard it less.

what??

first, very cool you have this on vinyl. i'll tell you the story of how i came to hear and love this album shortly.

second, i have two "come comes" remember? the first one i got from the first batch. the second one from a guy who said he didn't draw a dick on it. i'd probably keep the dick one unless that's the one you really wanted?

third, it's a trade. i won't take your wildflowers for free.

nah, i'm just kidding. keep the dick one. it's a classic. but i need to think about the trade over the weekend, ok? i do love the wildflowers album, and I have two cctst's, but i didn't want you to give up your only cctst (which turns out you weren't). but i don't ever listen to wildflowers much anymore and i would like for you to have it - it is a wonderful, beautiful vinyl, both the music and the LP.

and also, i am fairly certain i just saw sea change at rasputin, for under 40. i'll check it out at lunch today, but i could pick that up for you if my recollection is correct. i'm sure we could work out a trade.

I just want WC's extra of green MCB. I'm already planning on buying at least 4 AED (odds of getting a clear or blue 1 in 4)...maybe I should buy 40? I'll want a blue one, too, after all...

I would just hate it if it came down to an eBay auction where WC and I were the only ones bidding, and it ended with one of us paying hundreds more than necessary.
