Let's talk about vinyl.
Is there anything special about it? Does it make albums sound better? Or is it just for stupid hipster kids?
Also: List your vinyls! Or, if you have a ridiculous amount, list your favorites!

Here's my humble little collection:
Of Montreal - Coquelicots Asleep In The Field Of Poppies, The Early Four-Track Recordings, The Bedside Drama, False Priest (special edition red vinyl)
Mates Of State - Our Constant Concern, Bring It Back (autographed)
Japandroids - No Singles (autographed)
Extra Lens - Undercard
MGMT - Congratulations
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
fun. - Aim And Ignite
Cage The Elephant - Cage The Elephant
Ted Leo And The Pharmacists - Hearts Of Oak (met Ted Leo but we couldn't find a marker to get the record signed...)
Fang Island - Fang Island (same story as Ted Leo, actually)
Radiohead - The Bends

Singles:
Radiohead - No Surprises, Fake Plastic Trees, Karma Police
The Hives - Hate To Say I Told You So, Main Offender, Walk Idiot Walk
MGMT - Congratulations
Free Energy - Free Energy
Sidekicks - Sam
Voxtrot - Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, and Wives
Stray Cats - Rock This Town

Wow. When I made this post, I had one album. My, how a collection grows in a year. (Largely thanks to used records at a local antique store. I'll take inventory sometime, but it has to be close to 200, if we're counting all sizes.)

I love vinyl, whatever. I dont care if other people love vinyl too, it sounds warmer and I like having a physical copy of albums. I have never owned cds and I like that records come with a free download because I have an ipod. My sister got me Tallahassee on vinyl for my birthday.

Why would you not rob "A Baby A Blanket A Packet of Seeds"? You could steal that one for me I guess.

Also: Dennis Callaci(!)

I'm just not familiar with that one. I highlighted my favorites. I'd take the whole collection, though. Even the last can of Who hash.

Whoop de doo!

I'd be more proud of coining the phrase "Special goat treasures". That will live on.

My vinyl collection isn't much to brag about, but my most special goat treasure is a signed copy of Satanic Messiah by PPH and JD.

Other favs are my Pink Floyd vinyls, a number of Rush records, including a picture disc of Hemispheres, and a few which I lovingly treasure as I inherited from my mom. Also love picking up really cheap vinyl EPs sitting in the $2 bin at record stores, like the 7" Prescription by Baker (definitely worth checking out).
February 14, 2011 03:19AM | Re: Vinyl
Just one. I don't own a turntable, but I had to have this on vinyl: What Would the Community Think? by Cat Power.
February 14, 2011 04:06AM | Re: Vinyl
I love vinyl. I think it just sounds 'nicer', but i can't really quantify that opinion. There's something about investing time in a record, as well, as you can't really skip tracks and you have to switch it half way through. That makes me feel like i'm paying more attention to it. Now that a lot of artists are giving d/ls with vinyl as well, it makes it much more accessible.

Some of my recent purchases:

Superchunk - Majesty Shredding
Nick Drake - All of em.
tEL - Undercard
Gruff Rhys - Hotel Shampoo
Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (comes on heavyweight WHITE vinyl. This is my favouritest of all.
PPH - Fangio LP and 7"
allo darlin' - allo' darlin.

UGH! WANT!!

Oh, forgot to mention a couple:
The Black Keys - Thickfreakness (picture disc)
Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues (my prized vinyl, I don't even keep it in the same place as the others. It's a mad rare clear vinyl that I happened to stumble across at a used record store.

Can't bring myself to say "vinyls", but I have a few thousand LPs, hundreds of 7"s and c.50 10"s, so playing favourites is a case of time of day/week/year + mood.

Yeah, I was just kidding, anyways, what pink floyds you got?
February 14, 2011 09:58AM | Re: Vinyl
i only have hundreds of records. but they were bought before "collecting vinyl" was hip so they're just dirty old records.

vinyls!

I think it's mostly a generational thing. They're records or LPs in my house.

(When REM's Out Of Time came out ('91), I asked in a high street shop if they had "the new REM album" in stock and was told they didn't have it "on album" but did on cassette.)
February 14, 2011 10:46AM | Re: Vinyl
LP = long player = album.

Vinyl tends to clarify in which format you would like it. I think it's completely a generational thing, yeah.
February 14, 2011 10:54AM | Re: Vinyl
i call'em records.

because sometimes they're not made of vinyl.

if it's obsolete i call em tapes (cassettes, 8 tracks, minidiscs, phonograph cartridges).

and who could forget cd's!

Im only 22 and I have never heard "vinyls" I'll say I own an album ON VINYL but it is a record
February 14, 2011 03:11PM | Re: Vinyl
I absolutely love vinyl. To the point of obsession. I buy all the $1 records from Goodwill, raid my relatives' old collections (in which I've found some awesome stuff) and when I buy music for myself I always try to buy it on vinyl rather than CD. My collection is vast due to all the Goodwill and garage sale record hunting I've done, but here are a few of my (slightly rarer) favorites:

Olivia Tremor Control-Singles and Beyond
Neil Young-Time Fades Away (my favorite ebay purchase ever, for a reasonable amount.)
Bob Dylan-Another Side of Bob Dylan (from 1964, sounds like Jesus etched into a piece of vinyl.)
Nana Grizol-Love It Love It (this one is special to me because I bought it at one of their shows)
The Smiths-Hatful of Hollow (evidently from when it first came out, bought for an absolute steal at the Savannah record fair)
The Beatles-White Album (from 1968, from my dad's collection)
All of my old gospel 78s, many of which have this wonderfully haunting sound to them.

And naturally my special Goats treasures, which are shamefully few due to the fact that I got into the Mountain Goats before I got into vinyl and own almost everything on CD.

February 14, 2011 04:37PM | Re: Vinyl
In my family everything's a record, whatever it's on, but I have a tendency to associate 'record' more with vinyl. My mum's always called CDs records, but we didn't get a CD player 'til about '01/'02. If I said singles/7"s/LPs/fulllength/12" my she'd know what I meant. As alannasaurus - "On vinyl" (and also "vinyl", mass noun, but never "a vinyl" ) - but I've never heard "vinyls" from a real-live person.

I've got hundreds of not especially brilliant singles which aren't even in this house, but would be nice to get back to spend a week reliving ~2005/6. I miss living with my mum and having her punk/ska/reggae leaning collection at my disposal. I don't have as many albums, mostly singles. These I like playing best -

> Caramel by City High, as the first vinyl record I bought. I remember standing in Virgin Megastores faced with the CD single and the 12" and knowing for sure which represented greater value for money. I thought I had What Would You Do, too, as I'm sure I remember singing along to the instrumental, but I've not seen it for years so I may've invented that memory.

> Travel is Dangerous - Mogwai - mostly for Like Herod on the reverse.

> Anything I have by Clive Pig & the Hopeful Chinamen. I got my turntable for my 16th birthday from my entire family and with it my mum's copy of Happy Birthday Sweet 16 - still my favourite song.

> Silver Jews favourites are Send in the Clouds (Oh, self ignition...), Starlite Walker, & the Arizona Record (though it's the flimsiest piece of plastic I've set hands on. Flexidiscs notwithsanding.) Though ideally I'd like the proper cassette edition of Starlite Walker, this is the next best.

> Recently I've been putting on Fangio (and pretending my room's a disco) and/or The Monte Carlo Method by Nothing Painted Blue every evening. The MCM packaging is simple, yes, but damn, damn nice. I was thinking of making a t-shirt based on the cover and then I found that the album poster was almost exactly how I'd envisioned my shirt.

> The best new 7" I got last year was probably The Chenier's "Trouble". I was also jammy enough to get given a free Art Goblins split single direct from the hands of Eddie Argos. It looks like it should glow in the dark, but doesn't.

>SpecialGoatTreasure favourites are Moon Colony Bloodbath and Devil in the Shortwave. Disappointingly I've still not quite managed to get into Black Pear Tree. I think I spoiled myself by listening to the New Orleans bootleg and having my mind pre-blown by that version of Supergenesis. Plus I forget it's a 45 every time so I sit down and have to get back up (unless...) and then quietly resent it. I'm not in a rush, but one day I'll add Jam Eater Blues to the list.
