after i'd heard it, i thought "get lonely" could have very well been a prequel or sequel to it.

it has a strange thin sound to it, different sounding than all other mountain goats productions.

the songs have the usual excellent writing, and an uber hardcore mountain goats fan (ie, all yous here) shouldn't go without a listen. once you give birth, it doesn't matter if you like the kid or not, the kid's out there and beautiful regardless.

though, i at first missed the idea that there is an unreleased mountain goats album, i'm positive that there are many more songs and albums that we haven't heard about or will. that's nice.

quite dorky. but still.

what was your first post?

I KNEW it was a steel bridge, I just KNEW IT! HA! It's one of my favorite songs...OK one of the many I call my favorite. I have been on a photographing-bridges-kick ever since I heard the song. Always feeling like it was a steel bridge but never really knowing. Now I KNOW! How great! THANKS!!!

By the way, this is a terrific thread! Good idea. unfortunately I don't have any relavant photos to share. I live in Elizabethton TN. Although a pretty place probably similar to NC (since we're right on the boarder) still not any of the landmarks that I can tell.

But thanks, Mike, for sharing the Broadway Bridge!!

EDIT: cause a year later, I know now how to fix my broken quotes.

Edit: Guess I should say something about my first post. huh? hahaha

I have never been to Portland and had no idea that's where the Broadway bridge was. But I DO remember hoping it was a steel bridge. I had photographed several bridges around where I live with that bridge in mind and they were all steel. So I was really glad when Mike confirmed my hopes.

Sadly, there has been some kind of local conspiracy against these lovely steel bridges and they are being torn down and replaced with large plain ugly concrete flat bridges that have no character whatsoever. Two of the ones I had photographed are already dismantled. I'd love to start a campaign against it but they would just come back with something about safety blah blah blah. Psssh. Safety. eye rolling smiley

They were gorgeous. I will miss them.

But I am still thankful that Mike was so nice in welcoming me here cuz I have made so many new friends thanks to dis here place!

Brilliant gig, really enjoyed it. What's the deal with bootlegging? If it's not frowned upon on these here forums then I shall ask if anyone did indeed record the show... if it is frowned upon i shall edit my post but I really would like to hear it again in all it's technicolour awesome. Interestingly enough... I have a caseless Hound Chronicles. Nothing related to Hot Garden Stomp, though. I'd be happy to work something out with you, though!

...And for the record, I've been lurking for a while, I just registered to reply to this.

The thread was about how Missy got a copy of Hot Garden Stomp in The Hound Chronicles art. She wanted justice! And in the end, I don't know if she ever got it.

My copy of The Hound Chronicles still has no art. But my copy of Hot Garden Stomp (since that point) is just dandy.

And they all lived happily ever after.

Hello all!

After lurking in the forum for an ungodly amount of time, this is the thread that finally forces me to come out of hiding and register:

Do any of y'all know how to play Blue Jays and Cardinals?

I don't think I ever actually learned how to play it.

In response to a thread about what my favorite TMG lyrics are:

Quote
dreamboatcaptain
"and it's gonna be
just you and me
today
waiting for the other
shoe to drop
in tampa bay"
-the alphonse mambo

"when the ghost of your father starts pushing you around
how are you gonna make him stop
I took down all the crosses, I let him set up shop"
-cao dai blowout

and my favorite of all time --

"I can feel it in the rotten air tonight
In the tips of my fingers
In the skin on my face
In the weak last gasp of the evening's dying light
In the way those eyes I've always loved illuminate this place
Like a trashcan fire in a prison cell
Like the searchlights in the parking lots of hell
I will walk down to the end with you
If you will come all the way down with me"
-old college try

Excellent show, indeed. I have a good picture of him holding your head. I was right behind you, and I have plenty of footage of the back of your head.

I've got videos of "Orange Ball of Hate" and "New Monster Avenue" which I'll put on YouTube later today (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=dtrom4). I also got videos of that Israel song and "In The Craters of the Moon", which I suppose I shouldn't put up if they're new songs. I think JD motioned to me to stop recording during "Craters", which made me feel kind of awkward, but who knows.

Re: have we had an in-depth discussion of 'get lonely'?

Get Lonely...

Oh man, I was lonely.

I had just moved out of my parents house, into a new house and in a new area. My room was 9' by 9', just barely bigger than my cube here at work. I had gone to a community college and a community college partnership where I got my degree. I had never been on my own before and I was both excited and nervous. After that first weekend of partying was over, I became very isolated.

Now my bedroom was 9' x 9' which is small, but you have to add to that that I'm 6'4". My room consisted of my twin sized bed, a minifridge that my grandmother had given me and my computer. That was the week that Get Lonely was released, too. I spent every free moment listening to that album, cooped up in my cramped, hot little room. The album really grew on me, I would lie there on my bed, listening to the album on full blast with my speakers attached to the ceiling facing down at me, drinking to keep the harsh reality that I was truely alone blurred.

The Goats came to NYC, I got tickets with some friends to see them at the Bowery. After listening to a lot of bootleg concerts at work, I had worked out that Old Granddad is John's favorite drink. I snuck a half-pint into the show, gave it to the guy working the merch table to give to John. The guy working the table was a really great person. He told us fun stories about the band. Who knew that John sends christmas cards to the guy that owns the Italian restraunt in Bordentown, NJ which is right next to where I grew up? Anyway, did I mention how drunk my friends and I got? We had spent over $400 on gin and had a great spot up front, stage right. Heck, JD and PPH even signed the now empty bottle of Old Granddad for me! After the concert, I plucked my iPod from my pocket and listened to it the whole train ride back to NJ. Then in the car while driving my friends home (and I really was not in a state to do that) and then when I got back to my little room, I blasted the album.

I like to keep a tough guy appearance. It's just easier for me to stay quiet and use my size to intimidate. I'm not one to show my emotions outwardly. I can't even remember crying when my uncle, my hero, died. I sobbed the whole night long into the next day. I cried and cried and then cried some more. I cried because the album is so beautiful, I cried because I felt so alone in the world. I just cried.

This album opened up a part of me that I didn't think was there, I felt so bad because I wasn't able to express my emotions, I felt incomplete. It was a very freeing experience, I didn't feel like I had all the pain of the world bottled up inside me, I felt that I had grown as a person. I would consider this album a "grower" but not in the intended meaning most people use.

Almost a year has gone by since then, and I just found out at the start of September that my best friend had been going out with the girl of my dreams behind my back. This would be the girl that I spent countless nights explaining to him how much I cared for her and carefuly planning out how and when I'd make my move. After I found out that he had betrayed me and used every piece of information I had told him about her to have her fall for him, I dusted off my Get Lonely (as well as Joy Division collection) and just lie in bed, back at my parents house this time, listening to the songs and wondering where everything all went wrong.

I'm very excited to see them again this saturday at the northstar bar in Philly. I've since cut back on the drinking and cut that particular friend out of my life but I intend on trying to bring another bottle of OG down for John and Peter.

EDIT: I should note that the show that I mentioned at the Northstar Bar was where I first met Caliclimber and was told about the IRC room. I got to hang out with Cali and PPH afterwards while we talked about the new album. It was one of the best tMG concerts I've ever been to.

Bo-Day-Shus, Whereabouts Unknown, Whiskey Rebellion, Live at the Casbah, Gadzooks, Just Dropped In, Unlimited Everything, When the Levee Breaks. Are my recommendations.

What an underwhelming first post. It's so nonchalant and in medias res that I kind of don't believe the search function when it says that's my first post.

sappy and tl;dr -- pretty much sums me up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so this is a long winded trail to get to the subject line of this post, but I feel the need to share it.

Years ago, Dana Plato (Kimberly Drummond) died. I heard on the news that she went on to the Howard Stern show a few days before her death. So, I went to Napster (which was quite awesome at the time) and looked up Dana Plato. Among the various Stern excerpts was a song called Song for Dana Plato by the Mountain Goats. I downloaded it and it blew me away. I did a search for this strange group call the Mountain Goats and -- for reasons that are today unclear to me -- I came up with no other searches. So, I wrote the band off to one of those garage-bands that put their songs on Napster and I would never hear of them again.

Flash forward several years, and I was searching through random IMixes on ITunes. And I found a song by this strange group the Mountain Goats called Going to Georgia. And it was awesome. And so I looked up Mountain Goats on ITunes and there were TONS of albums to buy. Ghana. Zopilote. West Texas. Sweden. Protein. And more. And they were all awesome.

And then I was in St. Louis three days before the Mountain Goats were. So I missed them. And I was in Chicago two days before the Mountain Goats were. So I missed them. And I just got back last night from London. So I missed them. Drat.

And all the while I have been doing internet searches and found that a great Mountain Goats album, the Sunset Tree, had a boombox version recorded, and there were only a thousand of them, and they were all hand painted by the Mountain Goat man himself, and many hadn't been painted yet, but were in Mr. Darnielle's house, waiting to be painted. And I couldn't find one on ebay. And so I was sad.

And then last night, my girlfriend gave me one as an early holiday/welcome back from London present. And I listened to it. And it was truly awesome.

So, after all these long years, from Song for Dana Plato to Going to Georgia to Ghana to Sunset Tree to Come, Come to the Sunset Tree, Mr. Darnielle, I thank you for your significant and outstanding contribution to my life, which has changed for the better because of your song. Thanks a lot.

The first time I heard the Mountain Goats was a few months ago. I was at home because I had had a weird allergic reaction the day before and my parents decided they wouldn't risk sending me to school, so I was killing time on the Internet when I came across a link to the website www.themountaingoatswillcureyourbieberfever.com (I don't think the site exists any more, which is a shame). After I heard No Children there I spent the rest of the day finding out who the Mountain Goats were and listening to some of their songs on youtube. smiling smiley
Not particularly interesting, especially since it wasn't even that long ago. Feels like longer though. The only slightly interesting thing is regarding the allergic reaction I mention in the post, I still have no idea what that was. Nothing has mysteriously killed me yet, anyway. If I didn't have a photo of my face weirdly swollen, my parents could easily believe that I made it up.

Hey guys,
I'm a new fan. I mean almost brand new. I discovered the Mountain Goats a few weeks ago and am now hooked. I know that the MG just came to MA on their most recent tour but I was wondering when they were coming again. I know JD likes Boston so I was hoping sometime soon like next year. Any ideas? Thanks. It just about crushed me that I missed them by I few weeks because I didn't become a fan until after they'd played Somerville.
