the way I read Mr. Tweedy's quote is that he seems to be saying that nothing is really stolen when one downloads music in violation of the existing copyright laws. By that same reasoning, however, neither Apple nor Google nor any tech innovator would make any money, because as soon as their idea is disseminated, anyone could be free to take their idea and use it for their own product.

i have yet to hear an argument against the existing copyright laws that resonates with me. If Mr. Tweedy wants to give away his music, he is certainly free to do so. But, equally, if someone wants to protect their intellectual property in order to exploit it, i think that's totally reasonable, too. mr. tweedy almost makes it sound like he is being forced to protect his intellectual property. he is not. if he wants to give it away, he is free to do so. unless, of course, he signed away rights to it to a record label. in which case, it's not his to give away anymore.

Oh hey, caustic mountain goats fan bucks system and isn't here to make friends but if we just look past harsh exterior there is some real poetry inside him so let's give him a link to a pdf or maybe we can do a kickstarter to get him JD's book and a book or record deal.

"Good times, bad times, you know I've had my Cher." -Led Zeppelin on the band's admiration for singer Cher and her song "Good Times," featuring husband Sonny, from the film debut of the same name.

True story: There was an interview in The Wire mag years ago with Michael Gira. He was quoted as saying something like he "dislike(d) the current need to quote Cher". Next month's letters page saw him clarify that he said disliked the current need to (quote) "share".

"There’s something pure and infinite in you, that wants to come out of you, and can come out of no other person on the planet. That's what you've got to share, and that's as real and important as the fact that you're alive…The world at large, careerism, money, magazines, your parents, the people at the rock club in your town, other kids, nothing is going to give you that message, necessarily. In fact, most things are going to lead you away from it, sadly, because humanity is really confused at the moment. But you wouldn't exist if the universe didn't need you. And any time I encounter something beautiful that came out of a human somewhere, that's often, that's their own soul. That's just pure, whatever its physicality is, if the person can play piano, if they can't play piano, if they're tone deaf, whatever it is, if it's pure, it hits you like a sledgehammer. It feels up your own soul, it makes you want to cry, it makes you glad you're alive, it lets you come out of you. And that's what we need: we desperately need YOU." - Julian Koster, Neutral Milk Hotel
