Show us your music!

July 28, 2012 02:55PM | Re: Show us your music!
Would anyone here (as many people as possible) like to preview my new EP and give me some suggestions? It's definitely the best thing I've ever done, but I need feedback because it's not quite right yet. I don't want to upload an unfinished version anywhere until I'm sure at least three people are going to check it out and give me some notes. Mostly what I'm worried about is the mixes. Doubtful that I would change any lyrics. Possible that I would retrack an instrument here or there. Could farily easily be convinced to retrack a vocal. But yeah, mostly the overall sound... is this too loud, that to quiet? Does the track need EQ or other post production to be listenable to the general public? I think it has the potential to be amazing, definitely when compared with my other work, so I could use some advice to have it reach its full potential. If you don't want to discuss it in the thread, send an email to hackberrygarage@gmail.com (hackberrygarage AT gmail DOT com).

I had only recorded demos for the longest time and then last September I put out my first EP, free to download.

My project is called Tiny Cities, and having been writing, at least non-classical with lyrics, since 2005.

You can listen to the Matter & Light EP on soundcloud And one of my newer demos I am pretty fond of: Darkness, It Comes.

My friends and I were releasing physical media only on RECYCLED cassette tapes, see the site at Bedroom Tapes

Hope you enjoy! Some great music up on here already.

Beautiful! I couldn't listen to it properly yet cause I'm at work, but I will definitely listen again at home!

Meanwhile, here's the new album of my punkrock band Cyco Sanchez Supergroup. We haven't discussed the download thing yet (whether it's free or not), but you can at least listen to the thing.

And for all you oversea folks, if you want it for you car or something, I'm pretty sure we find a solution so you'll get the mp3s.

Cheers, Doc

Zerbrechen, Simon, Justin (the ones I listened to right now at the office) and all you other guys (whose new stuff I will check out when I'm at home): Wow, time and again I'm so impressed by all the beautiful music you are making without any exception!

Just wanted to point that out, people say "thank you" far too less for the good music they get.

Hey thanks a lot! The more I look in this thread, the more I find great stuff.

Here are the latest demos, that I'm pretty proud of. Excited to move closer to making the full-length:

so i'm about to leave on a 5-day road trip from portland, where i was born and where i have lived my entire life, to western new york, where i am going to make myself a new home for awhile.
literally minutes away from leaving this wonderful, beautiful place in hopes of finding another wonderful beautiful place to get away to for awhile.
And so the sad presentation and quality (these were all recorded in one take (except the stuff with multitracking, obvs) on the 23rd of August) is now validated, maybe. absolutely nothing has been done to make them "better" in any way. they are exactly what they are, the way the things i do always are. So if you want to listen, please do. The last year has been really rough and i havent been writing much. But i really wanted to get this thing out, in some way, before i left portland. So here's what i ended up with. I apologize for the lack of presentation (whats bandcamp?) and i absolutely hate to put my real name on this project but the frenzied preparation for my trip means that i'm lacking time to come up with something better. I hope you enjoy it and if there's something wrong (if you cant download or whatever) let me know but it'll probably be Chicago before i can check this place.

be gentle.

Lara, this is absolutely beautiful. Thanks a zillion for sharing, and hope all things with the new home go well!

Thank you so so so so much. I know its not much. But that is so sweet of you. Thank you.
August 29, 2012 04:43PM | Re: Show us your music!
yeah, so it's pretty great.

it feels more sad, if it were possible, than the last stuff you put out! i like sad, so it works for me. do you ever consider putting out an actual (physical) release?

i never really considered it. i dont know that there's any demand for that. i'd gladly put anything you want on a cassette or cd with some hand drawn cover art though :]
thank you so much.
August 30, 2012 03:52AM | Re: Show us your music!
oh, i wasn't specifically thinking for me, but just in general.

i love the fact that people can put things on bandcamp and get compensated for it accordingly, but i do love the physical medium and i've been considering starting a label of my own for while (i would have totally NO IDEA how to do it though, though!) so i'm always curious how people go about putting stuff out there physically!

@simonfox:

i would listen to your unfinished work and comment on it, but (!) i know nothing of mix levels or anything, so i don't know if i'd be much use? I would not at all be offended if you said you'd rather someone with an ear for this was to do it.

Yeah I have absolutely no concept of how that works but really, I don't consider anything I do to be on that level. It doesn't necessitate a physical THING, you know? I hve never played in front of anyone before either. So I guess I'm just afraid of the commitment of the physicality? I don't know.

But yeah. I really really so appreciate you listening and if you want to listen to it more than once, you can totally download it without paying. Just enter zero dollars into the box. I didn't want that to put anyone off. I know it probably asks for your price but I don't ever ever expect anyone to pay money for this, especially you guys

I downloaded something you had up in one of these threads once and really liked it so I decided I would pause the new Swans album and give this a listen. It's really amazing and I mean that genuinely. You have a very soothing voice and your songs make me feel like autumn which is one of my favorite feelings. The lyrics with respect to meaning as well as the flow of the words without respect to meaning are great. So yeah, good stuff. Don't stop. I am going to pay money for this as soon as I can. Until then I will enjoy it thuroughly on bandcamp.

I'd love for you to give it a listen. You don't have to know anything about mixing or anything. It's not like I really know much myself. I just want to know if it sounds pleasant and all. You can just say things like "Umm screechy part at 1:42 on [song title] is annoying." You know what I mean? I just want to know how ready it is because I feel like it's not ready. So yeah, email me or let me know how to contact you and I'll send a link. Might take me a day or so because I haven't actually uploaded it anywhere.

Just d/led, Layla, I'm going to listen this after the new Swans record is over. I hope you are as hardcore as Swans
September 02, 2012 04:54AM | Re: Show us your music!
I, too, am listening to your songs, Layla, after listening to the new Swans record (which seems to be the way you do it on these forums...), and they are beautiful! And far more appropriate and soothing on this cold, grey, quiet autumn morning than Swans. And yes, your voice, wow!
September 02, 2012 08:03AM | Re: Show us your music!
i'm so not awake enough to even process these amazing things you're saying.
wow.
wow wow wow.
just
thank you
wow.

Deep, cold, and nostalgic. And synthy! Love it. It was super sweet how it picked up, too! Was not expecting that.

This is awesome. The piano and guitar definitely make sweet love to eachother in Tan Lines. And really top notch lyrics, too. I love how you can tell when musicians are Goats fans simply from their music/lyrics.

You folks should also click Pure Juniper's facebook link there in his signature and like their facebook. I had already seen the video and downloaded the song before I even arrived here. It's good stuff by the way.
