Actual Question for the Mods

June 29, 2010 01:13PM | Actual Question for the Mods
Hello, Mountain Goats internet community.

I was wondering whether a mod could chime in regarding the recent deletion of two threads: the kegel thread and (um.) the rules thread. Both seemed pretty innocuous Compared to older threads that have been successfully discussed and forgotten, and if new rules are popping up I'd appreciate if a mod could give us some concrete guidelines regarding what's appropriate and what's not. Silent deletion just leads to confusion!

What I spend a lot of my free time doing.

edit: nevermind just read natalie's post on the unhappy thread. i dunno, maybe the kegels thing was considered too graphic/mature content for some of our younger forum members? was the porn that zxc used to post ever mod-ed out?

If you're wondering who to blame - I want to praise his name with songs and feasting.

KT- Fever created a thread last night basically like this, except fever-style instead of Liza-style (perhaps a little too goofy or something? Regardless, deletion was unnecessary) and it was gone this morning, without a word.

Also--as an addendum to Liza's post, to the mods: the last page and a half of posts on the "what's making you unhappy" thread, which probably hasn't been seen judging by the fact that this issue hasn't already been addressed, are all regarding this issue, if you want to see any more about where this frustration is coming from/our confusion/suggested alternatives to "delete it without a word."

Fever started a thread here in WWW last night entitled "Rules Thread" in hopes of clarifying the whole deletion issue by establishing rules. It is now gone.
June 29, 2010 01:22PM | Re: Actual Question for the Mods
Oh, I know about about the etiquette thread--Noodle suggested last night that a thread be made addressing why an obvious joke thread was deleted, and fever made a rule thread instead, which, while not being exactly what (I think) Natalie had in mind, still disappeared this morning. It's just strange.

You can all consider yourselves reported.
June 29, 2010 01:26PM | Re: Actual Question for the Mods
you know what would be awesome? if rik were a secret mod who slowly deleted all the threads until the only ones left were about fish.

I support that. Please discuss minnows.

Yeah; basically I am suggesting that we have a rules thread specifically for WWW. The etiquette thread on the tMG board encounters a couple problems when it comes to WWW: it's too specific to the tMG side of the forums, and users who frequent On the Road and Whole Wide World more than tMG section may never even notice the etiquette thread (not to mention, because the thread wasn't locked after the first page, if you click "recent post" it's really easy to just miss JD's initial etiquette post entirely and just see a bunch of derails). I think it would be extremely helpful to have a sticky post specifically for Whole Wide World that gives a good policy outline so we don't feel like Big Brother or something is cutting us off without explanation or reason.

Did you just equate the moderators on this board to Big Brother?

I have a feeling that someone somewhere is smiling smugly at all of this.

No apologies necessary. I'm not at all offended. Mildly amused if anything.

I don't know, must have been woejilli who deleted them. I haven't talked to him, but if I had to guess, I'd say that because of the uptick in the trolling/baiting/etc., he was trying to cool things down a bit.

It seems like a place like this shouldn't need 'rules' -- just don't post things specifically meant to provoke or offend. .
June 29, 2010 02:27PM | Re: Actual Question for the Mods
You would think a place like this wouldn't need rules but with the rampant deletions apparently we do.
My rules thread wasn't meant to provoke or offend, it was meant to be a place where this stuff could be covered, albeit in a slightly humorous manner.

fever, as someone who saw yours it came off much more as snark or provocation itself rather than something that would get or even ask for a legit answer.

Well, maybe slightly snarky, but at least one of those should be a real rule.
