So yeah, except for one last thing that's happening this morning, recording is done. I'm flying home in a few hours; John's sticking around for the first couple days of mixing, which Scott will be doing through Wednesday at Tiny. Which is awesome: we usually have to wait weeks to hear finished mixes, but if all goes smoothly there will be songs in my inbox when I get home tonight. Instant gratification ftw.

I expect John will have more to say about this in coming months, but in the meantime here's what you'll get out of me about the next Mountain Goats album: It's very different from the last one. There are quiet and lovely and contemplative moments, sure, but those might well be outweighed by the fist-pumping, grin-forcing, chorus-shouting ones. (If you saw us earlier this year with Wurster on drums you might have some idea what to expect.) There are some scary-dark songs, and some songs that sound like sunny Saturday afternoon songs but are even darker if you pay attention. And there are a couple songs that in a perfect world would be massive hits. And who knows, might even be hits in Australia.

In any case, listening back to everything as we packed up yesterday, it was hard not to get a little giddy.

We'll let you know when there's a release date; fingers crossed for early '08.
