The empty bottle does not seem to know that they are coming. Who is right?

Its posted midway down the main page, under "early warnings."

Does anyone have any idea about the timings tonight? Having seen the Bowerbirds earlier in the tour I don't feel the need to do so again, so I'd like to be able to get there for the start of the Mountain Goats set (I'm getting too old to stand around beforehand!).
November 15, 2007 10:41AM | Re: Chicago
Empty Bottle website says 9pm, but I've learned not to rely on their published starting times. I'm calling the club tonight, as I do want to see the Bowerbirds, but I don't feel like standing around for an hour with my pud in my hand if they don't go on 'til 10.
November 15, 2007 11:11AM | Re: Chicago
you'll stand with pud in hand...AND LIKE IT
November 15, 2007 01:20PM | Re: Chicago
Dude, I'm 41. The whole hand/pud thing lost its appeal years ago.
November 15, 2007 01:30PM | Re: Chicago
yeah, i hear from commercials that 40 year olds can hardly ever get it all the way up. eye popping smiley

oh no he dih ihnt
November 15, 2007 04:45PM | Re: Chicago
Hmm - I tried ringing the Empty Bottle, but couldn't get hold of anyone. I'll try again later, but if anyone does find anything out, it'd be great if you could post it here.
November 15, 2007 06:28PM | Re: Chicago
OK, I got hold of the Empty Bottle - they said Bowerbirds 9pm, Mountain Goats 10pm.

Hmmm a very odd show last night. Anyone remember the set list?

I second the odd factor from last night. Not my favorite Chicago MG show, but don't confuse that with "they sucked" or anything -- they were quite good, just different, or... odd! Peter rocked out but didn't have his usual "I like Chicago" grin on. (Reading his tour entries indicate that he wasn't having the best of times this time out.)

I will say that Mr. Darnielle was radiating waves and waves of love and appreciation from the stage. I've seen him smile like a little kid at Chicago shows, I've heard him proclaim "Oh my god, I fucking love this place, you have no idea" about the Empty Bottle, but nothing like last night. Whatever strange vibes might have existed from Peter, the song selection, the Bowerbirds coming on late, whatever were completely erased by how genuine and giving John was. I'm feeling kind of warm and fuzzy just remembering it.
November 16, 2007 06:58PM | Re: Chicago
Also, this show has the makings of a future rikalbatros trivia question:

What Misfits song was once performed twice at the same Mountain Goats show? Bonus point: Who were the two lead singers?
November 16, 2007 07:08PM | Re: Chicago
Actually it was first by Jon Wurster, then a second time by Peter, and finally, it was reprised by John at the end of "Best Death Metal..." So yeah, all three had a chance to sing fine lyrics like "And when I get your blood I rip your throat."

I've got video of all three so when it's a question on video Jeopardy, we're set.
November 16, 2007 08:36PM | Re: Chicago
please for the love of God upload the one with Wurster singing, or send it to me. I enjoyed that so much.
November 17, 2007 05:36AM | Re: Chicago
Whoa! Misfits cover!
Thanks for uploading!

(That's the one band where you have to use an exclamation mark in every sentence!)
November 17, 2007 01:44PM | Re: Chicago
I dunno, I thought Cro Mags! was the band that had to be exclaimed rather than said. Better to be growled if you want to be proper about it.
November 17, 2007 05:55PM | Re: Chicago
Hi there, this is my first post, and I was hoping that someone could help me. I went to the Chicago show not really knowing any Mountain Goats except for the Talahassee album (my wife and I listen to it fairly obsessively.) Anyway, we loved the show and are getting a lot more albums, but I'm also trying to get all of the set list from the other night.

Here's my problem. I can't find "In the craters on the moon" or "September 15, 1983"(?) so I was hoping someone could tell me which albums they are on. Oh, and if there was a way to get copies of "Houseguest" and "We bite" I'd be ecstatic.

Thanks. In advance.
November 17, 2007 06:54PM | Re: Chicago
Those two songs are new and expected to be on the new album. Peter hopes it's late winter/early spring 2008. Not sure we've seen an official release date yet though.

Umm Houseguest as done by TMG probably floats around on a million bootlegs. I believe the original version is on Placeholders by Nothing Painted Blue (Peter's old band). Umm We Bite probably only exists in the bad recordings I made though there may have been bootleggers in the crowd. Dunno. You can find the original in many places but Collection II is as good (and easy) as a place as any.

It took me a few minutes to really comprehend how far away winter 2008 is. Damn.

Well, thank you anyway, that was really helpful.
November 17, 2007 07:19PM | Re: Chicago
Sorry if I confused you. Winter 2008 meaning Jan or Feb (hopefully). The album has actually been "done" for months. On Sep. 1st, 2007 Peter wrote:

So yeah, except for one last thing that's happening this morning, recording is done. I'm flying home in a few hours; John's sticking around for the first couple days of mixing, which Scott will be doing through Wednesday at Tiny. Which is awesome: we usually have to wait weeks to hear finished mixes, but if all goes smoothly there will be songs in my inbox when I get home tonight. Instant gratification ftw.

I expect John will have more to say about this in coming months, but in the meantime here's what you'll get out of me about the next Mountain Goats album: It's very different from the last one. There are quiet and lovely and contemplative moments, sure, but those might well be outweighed by the fist-pumping, grin-forcing, chorus-shouting ones. (If you saw us earlier this year with Wurster on drums you might have some idea what to expect.) There are some scary-dark songs, and some songs that sound like sunny Saturday afternoon songs but are even darker if you pay attention. And there are a couple songs that in a perfect world would be massive hits. And who knows, might even be hits in Australia.

In any case, listening back to everything as we packed up yesterday, it was hard not to get a little giddy.

We'll let you know when there's a release date; fingers crossed for early '08.

We are, however, off topic here.

So, how about my account and photos of the show:

tmr, this is a very minor deal, but you're c&p'ing from a friends-only livejournal - although there are many friends on it, I think it's a (minor, again) breach of etiquette to share friends-only posts in other areas

now make with the wurster-led "we bite" video plz
