Baldwinsville, NY Show 7/31

July 28, 2011 11:46PM | Baldwinsville, NY Show 7/31
I was just wondering if anyone else was going to this show? I've never actually posted on here before, but I really wanted to share my excitement with others who can relate smiling smiley

Stopped by this show because it was in the area. The band came out in full suits despite the 90+ degree heat, which immediately caught the crowds attention. They engaged the audience throughout the set and John provided plenty of back story to the songs they played. A great set considering they were opening for Bright Eyes and it even had an encore.

Wild Sage
Prowl Great Cain
Damn these Vampires
Slow West Vultures
Birth of the Serpents
You are Your Memory
Psalms 40:2
Your Belgian Things
Southwood Plantation Road
Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod
For Charles Bronson (not sure if this was played here...there were some drunk girls spilling beer so I had to move spots)
No Children
The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton
Houseguest

Encore:
This Year (w/ Conor Obers of Bright Eyes)

Bright Eyes put on a great show and played a great mix of old and new songs. Peter Hughes provided some percussion on one of their last songs. Conor also mentioned about 10 times how great the mountain goats are and how everyone needs to by some of their merch. That was nice because he did not once mention that people should by his own merch.

That sounds like a good show! I wonder if there's a recording or video that will surface with This Year.

I would love to hear this version of This Year.

Unfortunately I did not record the show. Conor only chimed in on the chorus. It was not up to par with the John/Craig Finn version. Still cool nonetheless.

There are actually at least four videos of This Year up on youtube now.

This one seems to be the best of them.

I don't think he really knew the song all that well. It seems that John probably just invited him to do it and he just went up and had a good time. He gave lots of props to the Mountain Goats so that should decrease his douchenss to some degree.

That video confirmed my suspicions that Conor Oberst is a douchey douche of douchetastic proportions. I mean, I'm a fan of his music, but just look at that asshat standing there "dancing" with his beer and sunglasses, snatching the mic away from John for the only line of the song he appears to know. Christ, man.

I agree he looks silly, but consider this quote:

"THERE ARE NO BAD DANCERS, quit laughing at people for expressing their joy...everybody alive is an awesome dancer because dancing is the cosmos exultant within you"

If that sort of erudite anxious-earnestness seems a bit familiar, it should, because it's a quote from our mutual hero John Darnielle.

Really, I dont think it's fair to get on conor oberst for not knowing the words to "this year"; he seems to sincerely like it, and really, A) letting TMG do an encore, and b) cosigning it by singing along are both pretty cool moves on his part.

Even if he's a bit eccentric in an embarrassing way(or just very high), CO is still one of the better song writers of the last 15 years. And if youre not willing to concede that, again, at the very least he seems to have been—over the course of this mini-tour—relatively generous with praise and support for the goats.

I see all of your points, but this wasn't the first show they did together. This Year is an awesome show and everyone should have it memorized. smiling smiley

It's been really cool of him the whole tour and this was another moment of it.

I take back the hyperbolic douche remarks, but I find it kind of odd that he was constantly praising tMG throughout the tour yet appears to not know the lyrics to what is arguably their most popular song. He's an excellent singer/songwriter (Fevers and Mirrors is one of my favorite albums period), and I'm planning to go to one of his shows next month, but the sunglasses and beer seemed a bit smug, combined with the way he kept snatching the mic from John. I actually like Oberst quite a bit, I've heard he puts on a great show, and he may very well love tMG and know the words to "This Year", but that just bothered me. Perhaps I'm a bit overly defensive of my favorite band.

Bad dancing was never an issue. I agree with JD in that area; there is no such thing as bad dancing. If there were, I would presently be serving the first of seven consecutive life sentences for crimes committed at the Gainesville show last month.
