Track divisions on live recordings

July 01, 2011 11:36AM | Track divisions on live recordings
Seems the way it's generally done is to start each individual track when the actual song starts rather than any banter which might relate to the song (I'm not here to discuss the pros and cons of splitting live shows, btw.), so when I shuffle my Archos, I get a live song followed by the banter for the next one.

Would it not make more sense in general (and for my Friday shuffle in particular) to split the tracks according to relevant banter/commentary, rather than opening chord? Thoughts?

NYCTaper splits them up into tracks and [Banter] which is my preferred way of doing it.

I always track it out so the track begins with the song and not the banter unless the banter is over the opening of the track. Occasionally I'll break out banter into it's only track if it's particularly notable or long. For me it comes down to how I listen to shows. If I'm listening to a complete show this isn't an issue as it all flows together. When I'm listening to individual tracks I usually just want to hear the song.

I like to put all the banter into a playlist and listen to that on shuffle.

I always prefer when the banter is tacked onto the previous song, but that's just because I hate to look at tMG my iTunes library and see a giant list of "banter" tracks. I've got about 90 of them just for tMG currently.

do I have to hit you over the head with it?

I spent a summer editing a huge archive of live concerts, a few years ago. Our house rule was that the start of the track was the start of the song. If there was especially long banter, that got its own track, otherwise it stayed on the end of the previous song. I've stuck with those rules since.

gotta agree with you johnp.

i've just this minute, curiously enough, edited a live version of Jenny to include the beginning banter about kids robbing the money from charity boxes to steal a motorcycle because it, well, fits. That said, im still grateful for those who record the shows in whatever fashion they choose thumbs down
