House of Blues, Cleveland, 8/2/11

June 09, 2011 02:20PM | House of Blues, Cleveland, 8/2/11
Another opening date for Bright Eyes got announced today. I'm trying to get a carpool going up from Columbus, probably trying to hit Melt beforehand. Any takers?

I want to do this so bad but I just don't know if I can justify spending $40 on Bright Eyes. From what I've heard of them, I am not crazy about Bright Eyes.

Anybody know how fast this thing is likely to sell out? Better yet: will the tMG set be long enough to justify this?! Tell me what to do, forum!

do I have to hit you over the head with it?

I'm strongly considering going. I know some people who really like Bright Eyes. This might be a good way to get them into the Mountain Goats.

Also, maybe JD will fulfill the role of an opening band and stand by the t-shirt stand during Bright Eyes' performance. :-P

im tempted...

Let's go and give tMG such applause that Bright Eyes is forced to allow them to play 30 minutes longer than scheduled.

I just feel like it's an excellent idea to support tMG on every Ohio date they have in the near future so they actually start regularly scheduling tour dates here. Also, MELT.

Bumping to see if anyone wants to share a ride up still. Anyone heard anything about setlists and stuff for this tour yet?

I'm going but my car will probably be full. Where would you need to meet? I'll be starting in Upper Sandusky (which is not where you think it is.)

Oops, I read the OP so long ago that I forgot to read it again before posting. I should have remembered you from the Wexnor thread, haha.

Oh man, the crowd at this show sucked so bad. I got called a faggot at least three times. However, the band's reaction to me shouting "DEATH WISH!" made it pretty worthwhile.

I agree completely about the crowd.

Did any forum meet ups happen?

Edit: Why were you called a faggot?

mckenna.89, from the Wexnor thread I believe we've been to the same three tMG concerts. I just found this on Youtube and feel nostalgic for an audience that knows how to shut up.

For now on, whenever John is faced with a crowd of people who talk through his performance, he should sing Cut Off Their Thumbs in as scary a way as possible.

1. This is gonna be awesome if it's true, but were you the guy I talked to in the merch line? I was wearing that old Jawbreaker shirt.
2. When they started playing No Children, I got fed up with everyone being boring, so I forced my way to the middle of everyone, put my arm around the only other guy yelling along, and did it with him. A guy then proceeded to say "Is your boyfriend up there, faggot? Is this song for him?". Basically, a combination of other people's immaturity and a bit of my own jerkiness resulting from wanting to enjoy a concert. Still, not justified.
When Houseguest started though, me and the guy from No Children just started pushing and making our way to the front, and some guy said "Let these guys through, they're actually fans." Posi.

Ah, I should have done the same.

I don't believe I spoke to you. I'm over 6'5'' and was either wearing an Al Franken shirt or a plaid over-shirt.

Maybe we can meet next time tMG does a concert in Ohio.

Do you think that the crowd sucking was because of the venue or an unfortunate truth of Bright Eyes? I'm sure that an unusually large number of people in the audience last night were excited to see the opening act and yet the people who were only there for Bright Eyes seemed oblivious to the fact that there was live music going on. Megafaun in Columbus had an infinitely more attentive audience even though (I'm guessing) fewer people were there to see them.

In conclusion:
Megafaun is cool
As is Bright Eyes
Bright Eyes' fans might not be.

(one of the two people I was with came to see Bright Eyes, so my irrational suspicion of the fans doesn't go that far. )

My guess is you just managed to be near some of the douchey Bright Eyes fans. There's always that small minority that give the rest of them the bad name. I had a similar experience at a tMG/Kaki King show. There were quite a few KK fans who had no idea anyone would actually be there to see tMG even though KK was the opener.
August 03, 2011 06:32PM | Re: House of Blues, Cleveland, 8/2/11
That's possible. I guess the lesson is to always treat live music with respect.

I have to confess that when The Whigs opened for The Hold Steady I sort of blew them off. In retrospect I feel bad about it.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but I was probably just vague. The exchange was:
JD: For Charles Bronson, and I'm sure he appreciates it. 1, 2...
Me: DEATH WISH
JD: (Laughs) I am so stoked on whoever yelled that just now.
Peter: (Raises fist) DEATH WISH 3!
Girl next to me: Who says stoked anymore?

And I know not all Bright Eyes fans are douchey, it's just there was an unusually high proportion of dudes who looked like they should be in a frat and probably only like "First Day of My Life" who were inconsiderate. i.e. The dudes who walked through the crowd during some MG song (I forget what it was), obviously drunk and wearing white baseball caps shouting "Excuse me, sorry to interrupt your concert experience!".

For me the problem wasn't any single person, but the loud sound of a room full of people talking which competed with tMG throughout the entire performance.

It was a good time, though.

I was so conflicted about driving up from Columbus to go to this show... I've gotta say that reading this thread makes me relieved that I didn't miss a lot by staying home. It's too bad that the environment was subpar. Here's hoping we get a proper tMG show in Ohio soon!

Bright Eyes fans definitely have a certain vibe about them, I've found...

I meant more the calling people faggot part. I've noticed a shift with some of the other bands I like where suddenly there's a whole lot of drunk frat guys yelling for "Cowboy Dan". confused smiley That DEATH WISH shout out was pretty cool though!

Thanks for the report, mckenna! I've got to admit, my sentiments are pretty much summed up here:
