Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (14 June)

June 05, 2011 08:55PM | Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (14 June)
Anybody else going?
June 07, 2011 10:22AM | Re: Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (14 June)
Yep.

Should be a good venue for them, last time they came through at the Cedar I was a bit disappointed. But maybe the crowd ruined it for me.

Crossing my fingers!

I remember when i listened to the Current. Back when it was good.

Or when i was young enough to think it good.

Regardless, i'm ecstatic. It'll be my first tMG show, though not for lack of trying.

I'll be there too. Very pumped.

I wanted to go to the show last year at the Cedar but was away at school.

So it'll be my first tMG show. The Varsity, I'm thinking, should be a nice venue for 'em. Pretty small, good vibes all around.

And I agree. The current sucks now days, definitely gone down hill--way down hill. It was good at one point, I'm pretty sure. Back when the two older dudes had the morning show.

Cheers

Anyone know who is opening? Still says TBA on the Varsity website.

Edit: Looks like Communist Daughter is opening, music @ 8pm.

Haven't heard much from Communist Daughter, but the opener for this show isn't of much importance to me. Though i am glad there isn't any Bright Eyes or Bright Eyes affiliate. Not so much because i don't like Bright Eyes, but i don't know how i'd feel about the crowd associated with them.

I agree about the show at the Cedar. As always John was great, but there was something wrong, and i don't know what it was. The Cedar should have been a great spot, large but not too big, nice and close stage, etc, but the night was just off somehow. I hope the Varsity is better.
June 14, 2011 01:54PM | Re: Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (14 June)
I thought the Cedar show was wonderful... C'mon, he played Orange Ball of Hate!

But then again, it was my first time seeing tMG live, so no basis for comparison. If it can get better, awesome :]

Heading out in a few hours. Should be a great show, Varsity is a nice place, aside from the asshole security

Brilliant show. Being one among one hundred plus voices screaming "This Year" will be one of the high points of my summer.

It was incredible. John stared into my face and pointed his finger at me for a good ten seconds while singing houseguest. Just an amazing show. The AED songs sound fantastic live

And your heart nearly exploded? I was inches away from the bloke whose face John grabbed. How i wish i had been him.

Wait, when/why did John grab someone's face? Apparently I missed that.

It was during the last song they played. Dude was front row center and had been prasing John the entire night by bowing to him. I guess John wanted to show some love back.

It was an awesome show, one I'll never forget.

So we were all within the first three rows, to the right of John? I pulled a pretty good recording of the show, I'll have it up in 24-48 hours.

You Were Cool! I think it was before Going to Port Washington. Or before One Fine Day. In there somewhere.

I was the skinny motherfucker right next to you. They did open with Liza Forever Minnelli, and this setlist is missing Tyler Lambert's Grave.

Ah you're right. I don't know how I confused those two. And I thought something was missing, that was awesome hearing live
June 15, 2011 09:37AM | Re: Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (14 June)
Really glad to see that John is shouting down those still immature enough to yell out song requests.

Wish he would have played more songs from the new album. I've heard him encore with those same songs for the past 5 years, but whatever.

Forgot how much I love Palmcorder Yajna.
June 15, 2011 10:44AM | Re: Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (14 June)
Yeah so I totally got a setlist from last night. It's awesome! I'm gonna frame it!
June 15, 2011 04:31PM | Re: Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (14 June)
that was a pretty good show. didn't blow my mind or anything but it was high energy and the sound in the venue was good.
I taped it and I'm uploading it right now. The sound is decent for the full band tracks but I think it sounds pretty damn good for the solo John tracks.
I'll post a link as soon as it's done uploading.

here is the setlist:

01. Intro
02. Liza Forever Minelli
03. Southwood Plantation Road
04. Jeff Davis County Blues
05. Estate Sale Sign
06. Birth of Serpents
07. Dinu Lipatti's Bone
08. Tyler Lambert's Grave
09. One Fine Day
10. You Were Cool
11. Going to Port Washington
12. Woke Up New
13. Minnesota
14. Broom People
15. Damn These Vampires
16. Seeing Daylight
17. Prowl Great Cain
18. This Year
19. crowd noise

Encore
20. No Children
21. Palmcorder Yajna
22. Houseguest

anybody know what metal song was playing at the beginning? I just assumed it was Cannibal Corpse since John likes them and their producer did a few songs for All Eternals Deck.

@theactionnerd
were you the dude who set his H4 down on Brandon's table? I had my H2 up on a stand to get above peoples heads. I look forward to hearing your copy.
