aladdin theater, portland, 6/18

This is a little belated, but just a note for people complaining about the price - if you pay with cash or check at the box office during business hours (they have them listed on their site), the service charge is only $1. Paying with card at the box office is only a $2 service charge. We bought ours at the box office last week! Also - I'm really curious how this show is going to go, regarding the venue. The only show I've ever seen that this theater is a taping of Livewire! and I really don't know how a sit-down Portland tMG show is going to feel.

My friend and I are road tripping up from scorching Tucson, AZ to come to this show! Then we're heading south for the show in San Francisco before we meander back home. I am super stoked for this trip. I'll probably have my Merge Records shirt on if you see me.

So excited for this! Do you think people will crowd up against the stage? The sit down theater scheme...I can't even imagine sitting during a MGs show. I've seen tons of shows at the Aladdin and the only one I can remember people standing against the stage for was Ben Lee. In the nineties.

Anyone planning to tape and put it up on the archive? I'm still looking for a recording of the last Doug Fir show. Amazing.

Tonight is the night!!!! If anyone wants to say hi or geek out, I'll probably be in my Seen and Unseen tour shirt, sporting a black eye (don't ask), and standing outside the venue at an obscenely early time!

So yeah.

Liza Forever Minelli
Southwood Plantation Road
Jeff Davis County Blues
California Song
Birth of Serpents
Family Happiness
Cotton

Tyler Lambert's Grave
You Were Cool
Jenny
The Day The Aliens Came
It Froze Me

Damn These Vampires
Estate Sale Sign
Minnesota
Broom People
Prowl Great Cain
Never Quite Free
This Year

No Children
Palmcorder Yajna
The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton

San Bernadino

The order might be a bit off.

The energy level was a touch lower than when I saw them in New York, in March. Hard to match the electricity of the day before an album's release. And, in general, the Mountain Goats seem a little more alive when the material is really fresh and they're working to figure it out, as it was then. Perhaps I'm a better listener under those circumstances, too.

That said, the band put out tonight. It was kind of one of those nights -- two broken strings -- but they covered it nicely with a spur-of-the-moment California Song and a lovely electric Never Quite Free. The highlight for me was The Day The Aliens Came, and Family Happiness hit pretty hard too. Three audience members in a row requested it; John was on the fence after the first two, but when the third doubted that John remembered how to play it, John took it as a challenge, and off we all went.

Thanks to the owner of Eugene Sue for letting me listen to it up front. Thanks for the woman with the San Bernadino sign for bringing us a one-of-a-kind encore. Thanks to John for coming over and singing the last line of Estate Sale Sign with me.

Good show.

That's not how I would spell 'Hawaiian'.

Does anyone know if a recording exists of either this show or the one in SF? I know its totally against Mountain Goats bro-code to just ask, but this was my friend's birthday roadtrip out of AZ, and I'd really like to have a CD to give him of the shows.
