Baltimore Post-Show Recap

April 15, 2011 12:47AM | Baltimore Post-Show Recap
OMFS! Best TMG show ever. ~ 90 mins. 2 encores. #1 = No Children & This Year (massive sing-along). #2 = Broom People & The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton + John crowd surfing across Ottobar to me. I held his hand and helped him down then he ran back to stage. He said "thanks for being one of the best crowds I've ever played to." Insanity. I recorded.

Soooooooooo many thanks to the person who sold me their ticket!
Amazing show!
Megafaun was a blast!
Love the older tMG songs with the full band.
Can't wait to see them with Bright Eyes!

Edit: Anyone remember the setlist? / Was anyone taping?

All in all an incredible night. He played "Alpha Omega" at my partner's request. He acknowledged when I requested "Scream Bloody Gore" ("I wish I could play Scream Bloody Gore that would be awesome!"winking smiley. Also I was the one that allegedly shouted "Moral Sabbath". (I was actually requesting "The War On Sadness" from pph's solo album).

Baltimore crowds really are the best. I've never been to a Baltimore show with a disappointing audience. It's one of the things that makes me still glad to live in this state.

Holy shit, that has got to be one of the most mindblowing shows EVER. Great set, John crowdsurfing was BAMF, and talked to John after words plus got one of John Ws drumheads. SUCH a great evening! Gotta love the Moral Goats smiling smiley

Incredible show! Learninghowtobreathe was kind enough to give me one of his drum heads, and out of all the shows I've been to this was the best. Seriously one of the most amazing nights of my life.

Currently regretting not making the short drive to Baltimore for this. "Eh, one show on this tour will be good enough"= false. Oh well, DC was a good show, too. But no JD crowdsurfing. Jealous.
April 15, 2011 09:09AM | Re: Baltimore Post-Show Recap
yeah, over the years i have seen several different types of goats shows. the first was john+peter playing at vinyl fever in tallahassee. there was the solo acoustic show in orlando last year... i think this really topped all for me.

my recording sounds great overall. sadly my mic inputs have been sort of acting up, and at times i lose one channel and need to adjust the plug. i try to monitor it during the show but you can only look down at the screen so much and not miss the entire show. i will clean it up and get it shared asap. and after this, i'm def buying a new recorder. tired of this crud.

absolutely the best show i've been to in a long, long time. the dc show was good but this was infinitely greater. megafaun were awesome, the setlist was amazing. family happiness was so intense. and john crowd surfing at the end just completed the night. a night that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
April 15, 2011 06:30PM | Re: Baltimore Post-Show Recap
My god, also, Alpha Omega was awesome.

Did anyone record the setlist? I can't quite remember all of it. The whole night is such a blur.

ditto on set list. and goddamn -- alpha omega? would have traded pittsburgh's golden boy for this.
April 15, 2011 09:24PM | Re: Baltimore Post-Show Recap
JD also gave a really satisfying explanation of Never Quite Free that answered everyones questions about the song.

Could I ask what the explanation was? I'm curious about his intent with that song.
April 16, 2011 08:01AM | Re: Baltimore Post-Show Recap
I actually don't recall the explanation at the ottobar, but last night at the philly show he said something about how you can work for years to heal old wounds from your past - like a snake shedding its skin...but you will always have some remnants left behind.
April 16, 2011 08:18AM | Re: Baltimore Post-Show Recap
Btw, the ottobar show was ecstatically awesomely great. Something about the small club and the energy of the crowd seemed to ignite john and the band - especially the dancing couple right behind me(i was at the stage front and center) - john said he loved to see the dancing, and that inspired the crowd all the more, and in turn the band..and a crazy near moshpit vibe pulsed throughout the show. Incredible show!
April 16, 2011 12:47PM | Re: Baltimore Post-Show Recap
He talked about how everybody had some demon, and everyone had some wounds. And people turn to music (they either play music or come to shows) to open those wounds back up again and watch them bleed for a while. And we tell each other "oh, it's normal for yours to bleed that much, mine does that too"... But all in all, you can never really close those wounds. And then he started playing never quite free.

I know a bunch of people were interpreting that song as optimistic, but, well, he appears to have written it with different intent. Again, you can always take a song to mean what you want it to mean.

My partner and I are poised to partake in the pleasure of perusing breathmint's recording before retiring for the evening. But before we relive the show, some thoughts. Oh my god, that was an incredible night! When JD heard my cry and played Alpha Omega, I melted. <3 I've heard a fair number of tMG shows from archive.org, but experiencing -this show- first-hand was beyond surreal, and I don't think it's just because it was my first time seeing them. Heck, I even enjoyed the opening act. I was the joyfully enthusiastic six-foot tall girl with the red bow and grey flannel shirt near the-center right of the front half, I may have seen/talked to a couple of you smiling smiley. Everything about the show just blew my mind, and Peter Hughes singing more during the second half of the night was very, very pleasing.

Edit: Hee, sounds good so far! Thanks, breathmint~
