That was fucking amazing. I never thought I would ever hear Golden Boy live. Holy shit.

Additionally: I felt really awkward being the only person around me that was moving around and seemingly enjoying myself? Oh well..

I was dancing and hopping like a maniac, and there was one girl in front of me enjoying herself. (no idea your gender or anything I don't get on the board much) I didn't bump people or anything. I was against the rail in the 21+ area I was like fuck it, they didn't pay to see me so they probably aren't watching me smiling smiley

The show surpassed expectations. I could not have asked for more, the mix of songs was outstanding the energy was great. I love that little Johnny Worster kid. Plus I loved the opening band. OMG John's jacket! he looks younger than when I saw him last, of course that was in DC right before he got sick so take that for what it's worth. The highlight was
family happiness for me.

I didn't see any board people. When i got there I ran up to the front and kinda looked for the sign, didn't see one, but made some awkward eye contact with a guy in a black jacket, I saw him again as I was leaving. I hope you a board guy black jacket guy, otherwise there is a dude in a black jacket who thinks I want him awkwardly.

I was up towards the front, right by the entrance, a few rows back. A girl in a yellow flannel and green hat but I ended up getting too sweaty and took it off.

I LOVED Family Happiness, too! Ugh and Alpha Incipiens!

Yeah I switched into a shirt I bought, It got really hot in there. The happy dancing girl I saw was not you, so you were not the only happy moving person!
April 12, 2011 11:59PM | Re: pittsburgh april 12
it seemed like he was starting to play going to palestine right before alpha incipiens / the wall of requests. anyone catch this?

Nah - someone on twitter asked him, and he said it wasn't. But I thought the same thing too at first!

that was me! haha!
April 13, 2011 01:58AM | Re: pittsburgh april 12
I was huddled up against the speakers on the far left, nodding, stomping, singing and thrashing like a madman. Seeing bands that I really enjoy is a huge treat. Seeing the Mountain Goats was a fucking religious experience, and nothing less. I felt like one of those people who dance with snakes, that's how bad I thrashed around when I testified at the pulpit of the goats.

i had THE BESTTTT time at this concert!!! i was dead center in the front. John kept using my head as a balancing post as he crawled into the crowd to shake hands, spit on us, etc. It was magical. He shook my brothers hand, gave the guy next to me a biggggg hug, and literally cupped my cheek in his hand and sang "i hope i cut myself shaving tomorrow i hope it bleeds all day long" into my face while grinning like a mad man. I died. Family happiness was amazing. Like a man possessed. I love John Darnielle and the rest of the band was fantastic. And Megafaun was so fun. ahhhhhh. I cant wait to see them again someday!!!
April 13, 2011 04:16PM | Re: pittsburgh april 12
Left the show feeling like my brain had exploded at least five or six times. The best high I've ever had. Was right up front the whole time, held John's hand and screamed some of No Children right in each other's faces. So brilliant. I don't think I have danced so hard in my life or felt so blissfully happy and alive. What an incredible fucking show, and such a great set list, am I right? So stoked that we all got to share it with each other. Hope everyone else had as ballin' of a time as I did! Also: Family Happiness Family Happiness Family Happiness. Jesus Christ.
April 13, 2011 04:58PM | Re: pittsburgh april 12
fucking awesome show. i was (i think) the only person headbanging to about half of the songs.

does ANYONE know what the intro song he played was? the metal intro he played before the first song?
i'm dying to know, since i love metal, and so does John. And if John likes it, it must be fucking awesome.
Also, that was an anthrax patch on the back of his jacket. fuck yes.

There's a bootleg of the Cat's Cradle show at Dimeadozen which identifies the opening music as 'David Sylvain "Trauma" & Morbid Angel "Where the Slime Live"'... I don't know if that's true but I thought I'd pass it along!

do I have to hit you over the head with it?

I was the guy who yelled out for Golden Boy, so you all can thank me for that... JD chastised me for it when I met him afterwards :/ but it was still cool
and EVERYTHING was so cool!! It was so awesome that he played Dinu Lipatti's Bones and Elijah-- didn't expect those at all! Also was really happy about Family Happiness of course. So intense.

Also, very sorry about the sign thing... I was holding it up for a little while but threw it away because I felt weird with it tongue sticking out smiley Did any of you see me? A couple of your descriptions sound vaguely familiar... I, too, was in the very front (very VERY front). I'm really tall, thick black glasses, blue hoodie, carrying the rolled-up poster I bought. Oh and me and another tall kid were dancing and freaking out the entire time. Sound familiar to anyone?

I definitely saw you, BroomPerson, but I had no idea which people were forum people at the time, especially since I arrived late (during Megafaun).

I'd like to butt in a little late here and make a comment about the singing along stuff....

IMO, ya gotta feel out the vibe of the crowd. If you're the only one singing, theres a problem.

But I remember in the DC show on 3/25, there was an awesome moment during Dinu Lapati's Bones... He started off playing the opening chords, and everyone immediately recognized it. as soon as he started singing, so did the entire crowd, in perfect unison. No drunken shouting, not talking, just singing. And those first few words "we stank of hairdye and amonia" were echoed all around the inside of the hall. It was such a stirring moment, John went "woah" and then went on with the song. It was one of those moments that really reminds you why you're there in the first place. To see the mountain goats play for one thing, but I think it's bigger than that. If there was a DVD of the mountain goats playing live, it would be awesome, but it wouldn't be the same. You go to the concerts (or at least I do) to feel the unity that can only come from live music. At my school, I only know like three people who have even heard of the mountain goats, and none of them are that big of fans. But those moments in concerts when you feel that you are surrounded by people who are just as passionate about it as you are almost magical.

Also, have you ever been in the front row when they play a song like Family Happiness or No Children? When John screams "I hope you die" in my face, you can bet your ass I'm going to sing it back.

Actually, LHTB, all of those things happened at the Pittsburgh show too haha... I was in the very front too and had the pleasure of screaming "BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE ME GO TO WAR!!!!", etc etc, right at JD.
Even the Dinu Lipatti thing happened. Everyone sang along with that so well. It was an even more unifying experience than when everyone at the Flaming Lips show sang along with Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots.

I'll chip in with my singing-along-at-gigs story (I'm with the ayes on this btw).

When I saw Pixies on their reunion tor at Manchester Apollo in '05 they started playing "Hey" and about 2 lines in Kim Deal decided she didn't want to play it because she wanted a cigarette rather than to sing backing vocals, but the WHOLE PLACE just continued to sing the song from start to (pretty much-) finish. Now I realise a Pixies gig and a tMG gig are completely different animals, but I think there's something to be said for the communal feeling of singing along with the songs you love. Granted, there's only 4 and a bit album worth of Pixies songs so pretty much everyone there knew every word of every song they were ever going to play, and you're rarely going to hear the crowd over the band, but even in my limited experience of tMG shows (one JD & PPH, one JD solo, one full band) I've found that the crowds have been loud when it warrants it, and quiet and reverent as the occasion demands.

I've just read that back to myself, and I'm so glad there's no prize here for well thought out opinions...
