I will be the short-ish girl with glasses and short hair singing along [apparently] annoyingly. At my first tMG show, a guy came up to me and asked me to stop singing along.. sad smiley

You can always tell who the REAL fans are if they're singing along. Anyone who says not to join in doesn't understand the point of music.
Someone once yelled at me at a Ben Folds show for singing along because Folds was playing with an orchestra and we were in a music hall-- fuck that. Sing along no matter what.

Right. Unless he's playing Shadow Song or Matthew 25:21, in which case just mouth the words under your breath. It's awesome at those times when the crowd is silent; you can hear a pin drop.

Yeah, I agree. The song this guy was complaining to me about was Heretic Pride, a song I believe is fully acceptable to sing along to. I'm usually mouthing words silently at the quieter ones, though.

Singing along is for festival gigs when people are drunk in the afternoon in a field. If I pay (hard-earned, diminishing) money to see a concert, I like to hear the band and not the audience. First Iron & Wine gig I saw was ruined by a coterie who thought off-key harmonising was the order of the day.

You don't shoot your own movie at the movies, act out at a play, dance along at the ballet, so why should it be alright to impinge on someone's enjoyment at a concert? Clearly, I'm not a "REAL fan"...
March 31, 2011 03:07PM | Re: pittsburgh april 12
Well, I'd argue that there's something far more communal and primal about music, going back to human music first emerged. On the other hand, I do try to keep my singing in line with the volume of the song as not to bother those around me too much, but in general I am pro-singing. IMHO and all that.
March 31, 2011 03:11PM | Re: pittsburgh april 12
Don't live in Pittsburgh, but I am a yinzer at heart. Went to college in Indiana, with about a million other burghers, got a job up in a shitty small town in New York, and have been trying to make my move back down to that area. Looking forward to this visit to the bridgy city.

What songs does everyone hope he plays?
Got my pre-order copy of All Eternals Deck on Monday and have been listening to it on repeat since. I really hope he plays Estate Sale Sign. First Few Desperate Hours is another I hope gets played, as well Oceanographers Choice, Slow West Vultures and Broom People.

Whatcha wanna hear?
March 31, 2011 03:47PM | Re: pittsburgh april 12
I would be so happy if he played High Doses.
March 31, 2011 05:02PM | Re: pittsburgh april 12
I have been listening, and will continue to listen to nothing but the Goats until the day before the concert. Then 24 hours without, and then show

I agree that live music was and is about the communal experience, but singing along at a gig only serves to enhance the individual experience and not the collective one. Things like the spontaneous Hammond-hum on Old College Try from Zoop I work precisely because they are communal.

If JD wants us to sing along, he'll make damn sure we know about it!

Again and always, IMHO and all that.

Also, are we still in the pittsburgh april 12 thread? Hello Pittsburgh.

Oh, of course, that was implied. I didn't mean singing along to EVERY song.

Hey, man, cool your jets. I wasn't saying to shout at the top of your lungs constantly--if you're actually obstructing someone else's enjoyment of the show, then tone it down, of course. But on the opposite side of the coin, don't be an asshole about it if someone near you is singing along. It's a concert, it's what people do. It shouldn't matter about some guy next to you tastefully singing along, nor should it matter if there's some drunk chick singing a few rows behind you--unless of course she's shouting it like, in your ear, in which case you should drop kick her. Unless they're actually being a nuisance, who cares? Let people have fun. What matters is the music.

I was at this. This is proof that singing along with the song is NOT just for drunk people at festivals. It can be SO much better than just standing there playing with yourself and not getting involved while the rest of the audience has fun... tongue sticking out smiley

Eh, I will still sing along. J.D. has always seemed to enjoy the crowd singing along at every show I've been to & I've only been told off that first time. The next 7 shows no one said anything to me. *shrug*

I will probably be wearing a shirt with some form of cephalopod on it, I think.
