UK Tour 2011

May 28, 2011 05:19AM | Re: UK Tour 2011
Also, on the subject of "the funniest thing you will ever see", does John realise how difficult it is to search youtube for a specific video that will be tagged with both the word "pigs" and the word "police"?

Zach - that was Wednesday's setlist, spread yr envy.

Ahh, whoops. Guess I mixed up my AMs and PMs. I blame this thread with its confusing discussion of multiple shows.

Thanks for the set list(s)!

so having decided against wearing last year's XL octopus tee as it was a bit snug, and plumping for my Teenage Fanclub one (THERE's a band that understands the expanding waistlines of its middle aged audience), I now have an even snugger L tee. That Wii Fit is going to have to earn its keep...

It's not just me then...haven't tried on this tour's shirt yet, but yeah the last couple of XL's aren't really *that* XL. Many years ago at SXSW I was convinced to buy an L Last Plane To Jakarta shirt as they were supposedly on the big side. Never been able to fit in it, so I'm not going to fall for that one ever again.

I'm curious to hear what people think of the tMG / Submarines combo for this tour, because I obviously can't see for myself but I'm a little puzzled by it. The Submarines have always struck me as, y'know, fun&sweet&all but ultimately pretty harmless. Hard to imagine how that gels with John's stuff at all. How do y'all UKers feel?
May 29, 2011 02:40PM | Re: UK Tour 2011
It wasn't such a bad combination, even if I think they ran a bit long to cover John's sore throat for the Manchester show. It helps a lot that the lady is super-charismatic and can carry the crowd easily.

I dunno, it would be more jarring if the support stepped out and played something really heavy I think.
May 29, 2011 05:42PM | Re: UK Tour 2011
Had checked them out & already determined it probably wasn't for me. Due to the early start in Brighton, caught a couple of songs, went in one ear, straight out the other. Didn't see them in London.

Well Manchester Support 2009 seems best remembered for his capo*, Support 2010. I know what you're saying, especially after 5 shows, but I won't be caught complaining.

I dunno. I'm not really opposed to something completely different. Cleanse the palate and what-not. Monotonix were an awesome support for the Silver Jews, and when I saw 65dayofstatic at Koko they had The Mirimar Disaster and another ~metal band whose name I forget, Lethal Bizzle (grime/rap) and Josh T Pearson for support and it was a fantastic show. I'm behind more of that kind of thing. Unified scene an' all... And welcome!

Leeds setlist was (or approx.)
Jeff Davis County Blues
Southwood Plantation Road
For Charles Bronson
Rotten Stinking Mouthpiece
Minnesota
-solo-
Maybe Sprout Wings
Orange Ball of Hate
Color in Your Cheeks
Matthew 25:21
-/solo-
Seeing Daylight
Love Love Love
Prowl Great Cain
Damn These Vampires
Elijah
No Children
encore.
California Song

Rotten Stinking Mouthpiece was great - I'd been wondering about some of the quieter ones and if we'd get to hear them (Never Quite Free and High Hawk Season are probably 2/3 of my favourites off AED), and this I had pretty much started mouthing on the first listen. Does it remind anyone else of Bride, btw? Or is it just the electricity...
Couple right down the front fucken chatting through half of Matthew won't readily be forgiven, but have to remind myself that coming to expect pin-drop silence from audience is a bit of an ask in a hot crowded room. But, really, c'mon, if you're at the front and could literally touch a band's bassist at arm's length, then what, do you think it's a television? ...reminds me why I love the Jazz Cafe.
All so good and oh! Color in Your Cheeks, which I sing any time the shop's empty and have secretly been holding out for! & totally amused by PPH and JD's chatter RE whether Badger Song is actually about badgers.
Then on rattle's recommendation my friend and I saw Rosemary's Baby at the old cinema just down the road. A totally sweet evening, though I would send JD home to rest if it was my call. Though maybe it's 'cause last month I forced my boss to go home to bed, and now I think I can go ahead authorise anyone to have a sick day.

Yeah, I had no problem with The Submarines. Like I said previously, hands down the best support I've seen at a tMG show, although that's no great challenge. I enjoyed them - good tunes, charming, slightly unnecessary glockenspiel. All around decent support act.

Slightly gutted that I didn't shout out for Color In Your Cheeks in Manchester now. I think it would have fitted into the setlist nicely, and I'd have been ridiculously happy, but somehow it doesn't seem quite right to tell your heroes what they should be doing...

I thought the Submarines were pleasant, a little over-matched by trying to do a four-piece band's work with only two members. I like their albums all right, though, and I it was good to see them live.

The tMG show was great. At first I thought JD might be babying his voice — understandably — but right away he tore into a chorus, so that possibility was laid to rest. Peter was very impressive; he had to supply a lot of the melodic work that keyboards would ordinarily cover in addition to the usual bass responsibilities. Jon was terrific too, not overplaying at all, very tasty.

JD introduced "Sign of the Crow" by alluding to my article and his belief that I was there, and that I would like to hear one of his more ecclesiastically-based numbers. He then launched into the song, but forgot the first refrain and had to start over.

The crowd took all of No Children, and much of Love Love Love.

It was great. I'm wiped out.

hey, if anyone is interested, this is the solo set in manchester. the video is a little up the nose at points, but all in all, it's pretty good and the sound is decent.

Twin Human Highway Flares

It Froze Me

There Will Be No Divorce

San Bernardino

Woke Up New

I thought JD's story about the Precious Moments Chapel ("Psalms 40:2"winking smiley made it sound appalling, but from the Google Image Search results, I had underestimated the banal uncanny cloying white self-congratulatory sentimentality of the thing.
May 30, 2011 10:20AM | Re: UK Tour 2011
Because I'm that kind of guy, I figured out from my notes, my iTunes library, and Google what the Submarines set list was — in case anyone is interested.

Peace & Hate
Birds
Plans
The Sun Shines At Night
Ivaloo
Brighter Discontent
Shoelaces
You, Me, & the Bourgeoisie
Xavia

I didn't have their material from the new album, and now I'm thinking about getting it. I wasn't sure about "Ivaloo", but "The Sun Shines At Night" and "Birds" and "Shoelaces" seemed to work well.

I thought they were pretty good, had bought the latest album in advance to find out a little more about them, and just started thinking of them as a poppier Raveonettes/less drugged out Joy Zipper. It made a much better combo than tMG / Chad Valley last year.

Obviously they compare badly to tMG live, especially down to half numbers, but I enjoyed their sets last week, some sweet pop songs and the duo arrangements were quite lovely in places.

After seeing 4 tMG shows with them, they became a bit of a fixture... But then not hearing the ace, full-band Jeff Davis County Blues circa 9pm every night will take some getting used to.

Also, a little late, but the Leeds show was great also, not quite up to the astronomically high standards of Manchester, but was great to hear Colour in Your Cheeks, Matthew 25:21, California Song, also inspirational to see John battling through the pain and great to meet Wurster again and have him sign a Scharpling & Wurster disc.

Great tour, loved every moment. Back to work tomorrow, sighs.

the submarines was a bit bland, indie-by-numbers to my ears. much preferred chad valley tbh.

People in Newcastle do that thing we were taught to do in Key Stage 3 Music, which is wait silently a second or two after someone stops playing before clapping - so great in a setting that isn't a school assembly. I think once or twice JD got worried and had to nod or similar to make certain we knew the song was over... Plus a brilliant setlist (or, rather, lack of one...) for my liking including 2 of my favourites off my two favourite albums, in Quito and Ontario.
betamax was there for this one too, and there were people who'd come up from Durham (I think some were from the band One Night Stand in North Dakota?) who had also been at the Manchester Andrew Jackson Jihad show, and a girl who recognised me came over to say hullo, and then I thanked John.*

*I've really spoken to more Other People in not-serving-or-being-served settings in the past two weeks than I normally would in about a quarter, and it's surprised me by not being as bad as that reluctance suggests. I've also gladly hugged like four of y'all, which makes me worry that I might not even recognise myself one day...

But mostly, after an incredible ~week, I'd like to say what ccsparks has said already.

the couple dates i got to get to in the UK made this my favorite tour yet, based really on the incredible vibes of the audience. i really hope the last leg of the US tour draws crowds as cool as these sets did. and i do hope that i meet a few new cool fans, as the ones i met in the UK have really added to my favorite fan list, which is starting to get quite long.

my sole disappointment is not getting to meet rikalbatros. but there is always next year. and i am persistent.

Yeah, it was nice to see you at the Newcastle show, SF. I thought i spied you in the corner when you reading before the show start, but it was dark and also, you were reading. Interrupting someone when reading is like, a cardinal sin! I met some nice people on the night as well, who shared their contraband brandy up at the front. Always aprreciated!

Enjoyed the show but it wasn't as good as Koko. For all that 'This Year' is played all the time, i kinda missed it not being blasted. It's damned fun to dance to.

Yeah, there was a definite politeness in both the applause and the song requesting. There was a period of silence and so i asked, as politely as i could:

"any chance you could maybe try Source Decay?"

before some behind said:

"or anything from the Sunset Tree, please?"

Love being polite.

Why wasn't I at this?

Probably because I wouldn't have a job now, or any money, but I did have a feeling I'd be missing out by not going to the last night of the tour. Reads like a 'best of' of the other UK setlists. Still, as Meatloaf almost said, 4 out of 7 'aint bad.

I LOVE the Mountain Goats.

Now I remember Tomlab's site stating that tMG would be doing a "brief" tour in Spring, then coming back to Europe in Autumn... Here's hoping...
