i'm going to the london and manchester shows, and thinking about brighton. it seems to be about 90 minutes outside of London proper. Anyone know if that's about right, and whether there is public transport there? I will be staying by the the Tower of London, and I'm wondering if it would be easy to sneak out of the endless client sessions around 6:30 and get to the show on time?

Yes, you can get to Brighton from Kings Cross in about 90 minutes.
You can book tickets here ahead of time, if you like, and pick them up from the machines at the station. [www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk]

Getting a tube to Kings Cross is super easy - it's on more lines than almost any other station.

Feel free to email be at lis_bobis at hotmail dot com if you would like company at the London gig - I'll be going with my boyfriend and we'd be happy to escort you!

The support for the tour is Submarines according to the Brud's Twitter. Has anyone heard them?

been slow on the uptake but finally got my tickets to this! YAY!!!!!

no idea who the submarines are.

WC http://www.southernrailway.com/ if you book in advance you can get pretty cheap tickets for trains from victoria or london bridge (really easy to get to from tower of london). both those train trips take about an hour if you get on a faster train. it all depends on where you're sessions are happening. there are also trains out of liverpool street too but they take longer and are pricier. I'd say it's fairly doable.

[www.myspace.com] - it sounds like it might be pretty good, summery indie pop niceness. Had better be OK as I'll be seeing em four times in five days...

Fact - this is, pound per mile, the single most expensive train ticket in the UK. Which is why I'm driving and hotelling.

Can anyone else not wait another month for this?

Is it really? My neice does it all the time, so it never occured to me that it was over-priced. Undergraduates these days have a lot of disposable cash!

I really feel that a month is too long to wait, by the way!

your niece may have a young persons railcard, susan.

Still can't get my tickets for Koko until i've sourced a house to live in when i move. I feel i may have my priorities wrong on this one...

I think she does have a railcard - that must make it easier ...
Where are you looking to move to, B-max?
May 02, 2011 10:31AM | Re: UK Tour 2011
i used to go down to brighton every other weekend when my girlfriend was living down there and if i timed it right i could normally get a return for £7. now this was 2 years ago so it may have gone up some but i went the other week and paid £11 for a return from http://www.southernrailway.com/. and i've never owned a railcard. i reckon that's fairly decent value.

Birmingham.

I've a new job that takes me away from my beloved newcastle but, life moves on - it could be fun. I hope to have a house sorted this week and then i know i can get trains and the likes across so i'm then able to get tickets, knowing i have a place to go back to when the gig finishes.

the train from london to brighton cost like 3 quid 50 if you book in advanse and specify the station as that one over the river from battersea power station (victoria?). canny mind the operator though.

hey Sean - i hope you read this, or else I may need to un-delete my facebook acc't, the idea of which I currently loathe, and contact you. have you and eva decided whether to go to the UK for some London gigs? It looks like I will have a flat in London that week and, if so, you guys are welcome to stay with me. I also am planning on hitting the Manchester show, so you guys can crash with me at whatever hotel I find there, if you want.

i want to go fishing for albatross in northallerton.

Hey, if you fancy a road trip you can head to York, find the A19 road, follow it north and you'll pass a sign that says 'Kirby Sigston'

I think you'll know what to do next.

There are fifty tickets left for the Leeds show. Get on it if you need one!

I'm going to Manchester & Leeds now. I've got too much going on to make the Glasgow and Newcastle shows.

First time poster here.

Re-discovered TMG after not listening to them for a few months. I now really want to go and see them play Manchester or possibly Leeds (I'm commuting from university at Sheffield) but have no one to go with. Being 19, my friends either don't like TMG or have never even heard of them.

Would you say it is still worth going on my own?

I've never been to a gig on my own before but I really want to see them play as who knows when they will play so close to where I live again!
May 17, 2011 02:07PM | Re: UK Tour 2011
totally worth it.

the vibe will be good enough so that you're not really there on your own, but with other like minded folk all celebrating tMG. thumbs down
May 17, 2011 03:22PM | Re: UK Tour 2011
You're right, you only live once! I'm not going to miss the chance to see them!

I went to watch The Hold Steady a few months back with my mate but as soon as we got in we lost each other and then met outside after it had finished and we both agreed it was the best gig we've ever been to so I can't see it being much different going on my own (plus I know Manchester pretty well so that isn't an issue).

Although queueing and hitting the pub beforehand may be a tad awkward but then again I'm an awkward kind of person. winking smiley

at leeds, the Brudenell is pretty much the only place you'll need to be beforehand/afterwards as it's such a cheap, cool venue. I'm sure the beginning will be weird, but by the end if you get down in middle you'll have at least made one friend smiling smiley

Hopefully.
May 17, 2011 10:16PM | Re: UK Tour 2011
haha, I hope so.

I've booked Manchester, cos' I might make a quick visit home for the weekend afterwards. I'll see if any of my mates at University of Manchester fancy meeting up for a quick drink beforehand but if not I guess 'll have to 'meet in the room'. We all love tMG so I can't imagine we won't get on! (especially as I've never met anyone that has heard of them let alone likes them!)

Being 19 is no excuse for not liking tMG. I love going to gigs on my own, though, can be a more fun experience if you're not having to worry about interacting with anyone during the show and can just concentrating on enjoying the music. Maybe take a book for the pub beforehand though.

Some other unrelated thoughts:

I bought The Submarines' latest album as research, and can happily say that I like it a lot more than Chad Valley, and in no way dread having to see them four times in five days. Some pleasant indie pop songs, if the sun comes out again they have the potential to be rather charming.

I saw on Koko's website that if you get to the show early, they have cheaper drink deals and you can go out onto the balcony that overlooks Camden High Street, which is a nice place to spend time. Again, this is weather dependent.

Not long now.

Have a great time! I don't think you're ever really on your own at a Mountain Goats gig!
I was an undergraduate at the University of Manchester - grew up nearby...
