August 28th- Durham, NC

July 12, 2010 09:00PM | August 28th- Durham, NC
Music For Fences Benefit show.

Lucky us won't have to wait a month to see good ol' JD again!
July 13, 2010 10:03PM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
I'm hoping I can attend this. It's right before school starts for me, but I really want to see a Mountain Goats show this year, and this is the only all-ages show scheduled fairly close to where I live.

just got a ticket for this to-day. psyched as always for more goats action. and the cause, too, is a noble one - to get leashed dogs fenced yards to run around in - if memory serves.
July 30, 2010 12:51PM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
is this a full band show?
July 30, 2010 01:00PM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
Probably not. Usually benefits are solo. But no factual backup on this show being either way.
July 30, 2010 01:08PM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
Rainey is wrongey.

It is a full band show.
See jon wurster's facebook.

Oh well then I don't feel so bad about missing out anymore. Less likely to have an exciting setlist. (This is my way of talking myself down... lol.)
August 12, 2010 07:38PM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
i'm still super-excited for this show, and i don't care if they only play songs i've heard fifteen million times. every mountain goats concert is its own unique experience and every crowd is different.

further, what other mountain goats show has there ever been that had a national-champion-caliber jump-rope team as an opener? which had as many dogs as auditors? how many with children under 12?

the whole music for fences benefit seems to bespeak nothing but a good time for all. i'm also really looking forward to seeing birds and arrows.

As a West Coaster who's heading back to an East Coast school at the end of the month, I've been working up plans to make a little stop in Durham on the 28th... I was wondering if any N. Carolinians had some pointers as to a cheap place to stay in the general vicinity of the show and/or airport? I may not even end up needing to spend the night, but lugging three heavy bags into even an outdoor show might prove a little inconvenient for myself and my fellow concertgoers. Any advice would be ultra-appreciated!
August 16, 2010 04:44PM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
There's a Microtel in Hillsborough thats only about 15 minutes up the interstate from downtown Durham. Easy access back on the interstate.

Not what you'd call luxurious but cheap (usually $50 to $60 a night).

Not sure where it is in relation to the airport though.

Darn it, turns out I can't get to this show after all. Oh well. I'll try to go to the next Mountain Goats show in the southeast.

what are the odds of this selling out? I don't get paid until monday and I'm paraparanoid!
August 21, 2010 01:31AM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
well, it's in a park, so the odds of it selling out are probably small enough that you can wait til monday to get your billet.

Has anyone else in the area seen billboards for this show? I've seen a double sided one down near Garner.
August 24, 2010 01:16AM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
i don't know about billboards per se, but i've seen placards up for it around durham, outside francesca's dessert cafe and outside of cosmic cantina.

OH MY GOD, that show was bat-shit crazy. and i mean completely bonkers.

here's a photo. i love it. it is very much the epitome of what the show was all about - that ferocious energy, like that fabled animal escaping from its cage.

08. You Were Cool ("same four chords" - new song, same as at pinhook - * edit 11/18/10)

Not only did they open and close with it, but John crowd surfed during the encore version. So, so fun. John was drunk and feeling good.

Best night of my life. End of story.
August 29, 2010 02:12AM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
Super greatness all around! Thx for the setlist and killer photo kittenry!
August 29, 2010 09:55AM | Re: August 28th- Durham, NC
it was pretty funny, i asked him at the pinhook if he wanted a drink before the show, and he said no, he doesn't want to be that guy who plays drunk.

also, i yelled for "you're in maya" and he considered it for about 5 seconds before dismissing it.

i forget the live show where he and peter discussed the band that opened and closed with the same song, but that's what he did, after the technical difficulties before the show led to him starting out with death metal. really good show

kittenry, i think this one's better

i mean, LOOK HOW HAPPY THEY ARE. crazy.

shlack, blackliner, thanks for the props. so glad you enjoyed the photos.

favourite parts of the night:

1) when he played the last few chords of 'this year' staring right into my face.
2) some girl was recording or trying to take an iphone photo and john grabbed it out of her hand and started shouting into it.
3) john crowd-surfing, clearly.
4) bantering with john and peter here and there was part of my birthday present to myself. one of the benefits of standing right next to the stage.
5) i always love it when he reps for north carolina. speaking about the genesis of 'the sunset tree,' he mentioned that it started to germinate after moving from iowa to north carolina in 2003. he said, "i will rep for north carolina til the day that i die. if you're not from here, you should move here, because north carolina will present to you a degree of realness you had not known you were capable of harboring, and you will get in touch with the shit inside of you that you thought you were allowed to leave buried forever....get real with yourself for once and learn what you are all about." that hit me pretty hard.

i know for my own part that between john's constant repping, and sites like daytrotter and the great local web-log, 'triangle music,' my own love for the music of my home state has soared over the past year. you always feel a part of something inclusive and welcoming at a mountain goats show anyway, but a home-show is really something else.

Blackliner got it right.

This show was amazing but in such a completely different way than the Pinhook show. One not being better than the other. Just completely awesome for different reasons.

If the Pinhook was bolts of lightning and electricity coursing through the room, then this show was the earth shattering thunder. There was so much energy. Raw energy. It wasn't JD holding the audience balanced on the edge of every note he plays beautifully and captivating. This was loud, in your face, blasts of the Mountain Goats songs much in a way I've never heard them played before.

JD, PPH, and Jon were armed with a full on assault of crashing drums, tremendous bass lines, and vocals that weren't indie folksy thoughtfully delivered pensive and delicate. They were raw and loud and heavily rocking us all into oblivion!

PPH cleared up an awful misconception for me. I was always under the impression (mostly due to my lack of knowledge on the subject, im sure) that the bass was mostly "bum bum bumbum bum" or some such rhythmic pace. But PPH played that bass like there was no limit to what it could do. He rawked the HELL out of the second BEDMiD!! But nothing came close to the outrageously mind blowing drum solo Jon Wurster gave to finish that same song and end the night.

You could tell how much fun everyone was having on stage AND in the audience. JD especially. Not only were we all a witness to his love for Durham and North Carolina once again (if ever they needed a spokes person to sell someone on the area they should look him up!) but we were all a witness to how much JD ENJOYS playing with the band. I can see why. It's not that it isn't absolutely lovely to see and hear him perform solo. This show was my 6th and only my second seeing him with the full band (the first being the Black Pear Tree tour) so it's not that I don't have a deep and profound appreciation for what he can do on that stage alone. BUT! When he gets up there with PPH and Wurster, it's like he has had new life breathed into him! Not even at the Black Pear Tree show, however, did I see them all invoke such wholehearted enthusiasm and energy. JD alone is a force to recon with but with the band backing him, unhinged and wide open, they are unstoppable!

I'm so glad I was there to see this particular show. I danced my ever loving ass off! Now I can see what potential the music has when performed with everyone. I would never miss a full band show. (ok, it's true, I would most likely not miss ANY show if I could help it, hahaha)

Mad, crazy, insane props to them all!

I did take some pix. I chose to bring the zoom lens thinking, meh, 8 o'clock, it'll still be fairly light. But then began to regret that decision as it grew darker and darker. But still, a few came out. Some better than others.

Prolly none as good as kittenry's though! Congrats on that photo! SO good!!

Here's mine... [www.flickr.com]

ETA: I think this photo also sums it up pretty nicely! haha

Hi--I'm new to the board.

I was at last night's show and was blown away by Darnielle's dynamic presence. The whole show was amazing but particularly his performance of Wild Sage! He would sometimes abandon his guitar altogether and put all of his energy and alcohol-induced focus into singing with emotion, and then he would hammer his guitar for all it was worth when the song was more familiar. Wow! I hope someone caught this energy on video and doesn't believe it bad to share with the rest of the world, although some moments only need to exist in their own time. I understand this and am fine with just the memory.
