I feel kinda bad though for rating Get Lonely and TLOTWTC down there, but when it comes down to it this is a rating of MOUNTAIN GOATS albums, people, and therefore they are ALL, by definition, better than 90% of the shit that's out there.

I love them all equally, but some are more equal than others...

To be fair (and to this thread's credit), no one has really been hating on anything. Just expressing a preference.

The top 5 are interchangeable on a daily or hourly basis but at this moment in time I would say:

1. WSABH
2. Tallahassee
3. The Sunset Tree
4. The Life of the World to Come
5. Get Lonely
6. Heretic Pride

Tallahassee was the album that hooked me - I even started dreaming about the Alpha couple.

Alpha Couple dreams would most likely be terrifying.

It's hard to tell if I'm just rating it highly because it's new and I'm still excited about it, but TLotWtC shot up to the top of my list after listening to it for about a month. The Sunset Tree, which was my favorite for a long time, has the most emotional resonance for me, except for maybe Tallahassee. Those two are pretty close in ranking, really--my friend copied both for me at the same time so it's tough for me to separate them. WSABH I couldn't get into at first, though I've definitely come around on it. Looking back, I think I just expected "The Young Thousands" to be another "This Year," and then after a couple plays I realized it wasn't and was stupidly disappointed. Get Lonely rules, but I can only listen to it occasionally. Heretic Pride I agree is the weakest collection of songs in spite of great highlights. There's nothing I really dislike, but there are a lot of songs I can accidentally ignore.

But actually I like all these records more than most other records I listen to which I guess is why I'm here.

I hold them all at a very close level, so the love for the one in last place actually isn't too far behind the first place.
There's barely any tMG songs I have no remorse for skipping, and I can skip "The House That Dripped Blood," "Idylls Of The King," and "Peacocks" without remorse (don't get me wrong, they're still great songs.)
That album has some of my top favorites on there, but it also has the highest amount of tracks (3) that I can't get behind 100%.

EDIT: I just want to say that putting any of these albums at the bottom of a list feels like I'm in the middle of a lie and betrayal.

I don't hate Heretic Pride, though it is defnitely my least favourite - I just find it is a bit more uneven, there are some songs that just appeal to me less.

With Get Lonely, at first I didn't like it at all but then it grew on me, it was a favourite back in winter.

SlowWestVulture, I love Idylls of the King - both melodically and it has some of my favourite images "your face, like a vision straight out of Holly Hobbie" and "your eyes, twin volcanoes, bad ideas dancing around in there".

For whatever reason just never got into WSABH as much- there are def songs on it I love (there was a period of time where I was completely obsessed with "Pigs ...Straightaway" and "Against Pollution" was absolutely incredible live) it just doesn't click with me. I also think it is no accident that Sunset Tree was also the first 4AD album I bought.

The Sunset Tree was the first album I heard and the hook that pulled me into the world of the Mountain Goats. It also resonates with me for subject-matter reasons.

On The Life of the World to Come I have to skip "Psalms" and on Heretic Pride I have to skip "In the Craters on the Moon" and "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" because these songs are all just too heavy for me. Everything else on these two albums well makes up for it, though.

I like all songs on Tallahassee but Get Lonely and We Shall All Be Healed have some real stand-out tracks.

3. Tallahassee (That scream at the end of See America Right kills me EVERY time)

Though I buy everything on two formats (CD/Vinyl) upon release. The only other one I do that for is Bonnie Prince.

heretic pride's guitars and drums and feel to the songs felt real welcome. i remember trying very hard to like that album, and i did end up liking it.

It's funny; some of the critiques of Heretic Pride I've heard have centered around the fact that the album is more thematically disjointed than the other recent albums. But I probably wouldn't have come up with that if I hadn't read others say it. The apparent randomness of the songwriting is one of the things I most like about that album... and quite reminiscent of John's earlier work, imho.
