Interesting to see Tallahassee as someone's least favorite. Kind of curious as to the reasoning behind this because from what I have gathered it's not a very common opinion.

I hardly ever properly participate in tMG threads, so what the hell, I'll participate for once.

1. Tallahassee (Too much catchiness and alpha couple to not be loved; while other albums have individual songs I like better than the best songs on this album, as a whole I feel it's the strongest--and I've always loved the packaging)
2. Sunset Tree (lol, I'm just thinking about a certain superfan shuddering in disgust, not that he "still reads the forums" )
3. TLOTWTC (What can I say, I've gotten to the point where I can even sorta tolerate Romans. It's only that shitty Genesis that JD first posted that I still can't sit through.)
4. WSABH (This and TLOTWTC could easily change from day to day; I've been listening to TLOTWTC a lot lately though so it's grown on me tons and pushed its way up the list)
5. Get Lonely (it has its fantastic moments, and it is not a bad album or anything, but I usually have to be in a very specific mood for it)
6. Heretic Pride (Has some great highs in MMR and though I know my # people might shoot me for this... AUTOCLAVE , but the ones I don't like just drag it down way too much for me.)

Yeah, I had to get all elaborate-y and shit.

Oh don't get me wrong, in the right moment it is amazing, but it is often too hard for me to listen to as a whole and enjoy because it makes me too depressed (I am aware that lots of JD's songs are just as if not more lyrically depressing than a lot of this album, but the combination of that with the instrumentation, vocal affectations, etc. in GL are just too heavy for me most days). Also, a little overboard w/ falsetto.

If You See Light is one of my fave 4AD songs out there, though.

almost in order from oldest to most recent, which is unfortunate. that said all are amazing and almost entirely great except i have trouble with heretic pride- there are great songs (lovecraft inb brooklyn, Michael Myers resplendent, sax rohmer #1, sept 15th 1983) but feels a little scattered as an album, less consistency. Also i first got into tMG with Tallahassee then WSABH and every song on each of those is amazing. work so flawlessly as albums i find it incredibly difficult to say which i love more. as mentioned above i had mad love for get lonely, it's tough to choose between the two. and tLotWtC is great and still growing but it takes time to work it's way into my affection as much as the other 4, it certainly took get lonely some time.

I somewhat feel as if The Sunset Tree has outplayed its role in my "musical history" though, as I haven't returned to it in a while, but based on a combination of past and present sentiments I'm guessing it should rank as number one. Meanwhile, I've been re-discovering Tallahassee, which I initially didn't like very much, but which I now think is increasingly full of awesomeness. The same can be said, though to a lesser extent, about Get Lonely; I mostly end up just listening to "Moon Over Goldsboro" on repeat.

I very rarely listen to The Sunset Tree any more, but I sleep safe in the knowledge that each time I do it is just as incredible as I remembered.

I'm a bit surprised at the WSABH love, it's never fully clicked as an album for me. I do love Your Belgian Things and Home Again Garden Grove but I've probably only listened to the whole thing in order maybe twice.

1 and 2. Tallahassee and We All Shall Be Healed (depends on wether I'd like to hear more or less drums)
3. The Life Of The World To Come (but this one is also slowly sneaking up into the top two)
4. Heretic Pride
5. Sunset Tree
6. Get Lonely (I'm just about to buy it soon, but there's got to be a reason it took me so long to buy it).

Very interesting discussion. I agree with therainechild's comments - Heretic Pride has fantastic songs, but overall lacks consistency; Get Lonely is remarkably consistent, but requires a certain mood to fully appreciate; Genesis 3:23 has its flaws (I find that little guitar part after every line a bit too repetitive); and Tallahassee is such a solid album on the whole. I also agree with EvilEivind and El Nombre that while The Sunset Tree doesn't get as many plays these days, it still is an incredibly strong album. I was going to make it even with Tallahassee, but the more I think about it, the more I remember what a solid, amazing album this really is from start to finish - regarding the lyrics, songwriting, performance, album flow, and how much it moves me.

I'm not such a huge WSABH fan, but it's last through process of elimination, not because I have any special dislike for it. Tallahassee just wins because of everything about it. Get Lonely is almost a tie with is because it's the first tMG album I ever heard and is responsible for my addiction and also because I just really, really love it. I agree that there's a certain mood necessary to appreciate it, but I seem to find myself in that mood a lot.

For me, I have to be depressed to be in a Get Lonely mood, so I hope you're not depressed a lot, Gloria!

I haven't really gotten into Get Lonely much until very recently, in which I listened to it dozens of times repeatedly during a situation it was probably intended to be listened to, ha. I do wish I could have ranked it higher but I've grown far too attached to the four I ranked before it. TLOTWTC is quickly becoming my favorite though. The second I post this I'm going to listen to it one more time through and wish I put it at #1.
