Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats

November 27, 2009 07:40AM | Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats
OK so the other thread is almost 20 pages, so here's a new one. (btw, ever notice how the word OK is a sideways man?)

First off, here's the super awesome link to our super awesome website: www.uglythingsinthedarkness.com

Anyway, here's the link to the torrent: Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats Torrent

If someone could be so kind as to upload the .zip file to a site like MegaUpload or FileDropper, that'd be great. My computer is failing to do so.

As for donations... I think we should pool the donation money together and adopt a Farm Sanctuary animal for the forums. I'll be bringing my 50 hard copies tonight in DC and tomorrow in Philadelphia to give away for FS donations. Not gonna be at either show? Enjoying the digital copy? You should donate to Farm Sanctuary then. If you want to just donate some cash directly to FS, that'd be awesome. However, if you'd like to add to the amount I'll be collecting for the forum adoptee fund, you can donate to me via PayPal (acowkickedme@gmail.com). BE SURE TO PUT YOUR FORUM NAME AND "FARM SANCTUARY" WHEN YOU SEND YOUR DONATION. I will be posting pictures of every online donation submitted (with last names & emails blurred out for security) and then again a picture of the transaction when I send the lump sum to Farm Sanctuary, so everyone knows their money is really going up there, and not to me. daniellescomment will be helping me through this process as well. She'll know the total amount made from selling the hard copies tomorrow night, which should work as a system of checks and balances.

That being said, please donate, please enjoy, and please seed!

Colin

[Moved messaged.] Was just about to comment on and praise your rendition of the song, Golden Calf Figurine / your favorite effigy. You did an excellent job, and it has a certain desolate urban Norwegian sound to it, if that description makes any sense. Definitely appropriate for these dark winter nights. How did you record it, by the way? Glad you enjoyed doing it, too! So, you're welcome. Here, have some Norway.

I'm also glad that my song request was arguably the most obscure one, scoring me tons of indie cred points.

Fidelity Wars #78: Hästpojken – “Gitarrer & Bas, Trummor & Hat”

Why's everyone in this thread a f***ing Mountain Goats fan?!
November 27, 2009 09:01AM | Re: Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats
As far as equipment goes, I'm generally not pretentious as long as I'm recording with some sort of condenser and have enough tracks to do whatever the hell I want instrumentally. In this case, I took an old 4 track recorder that still powered up but wouldn't record, turned on the internal mic, ran an 1/8th inch cord from the phones output (the line out was more noisy) to the mic input of my computer and recorded it on Audacity. Musically, it was rhythm guitar, a track of me plucking around in arpeggios on the acoustic, a bass track, Cecilia's vocal track, my drunken overly reverbed vocal track(s), a few cello tracks (where I'm playing the same thing, the purpose was just to create a sort of "orchestra" sound which I had fun experimenting with both from the recording and playing standpoint), a single piano track (which I doubled up on and added a ton of reverb to one while leaving the other dry), and a track of slide guitar. All of it was me just putting the ol' 4 track next to whatever instrument I was playing. All acoustic instruments except the slide which was through my old fender blues amp. As far as reworking it. I thought about the lyrics a while and how uptempo JD's version was. Decided doing it real subdued and quiet was best because I didn't want to tread on JD's ground and the lyrics seem sort of...well I just think they fit something subdued. A lot of the parts were made up on the spot, particularly the little acoustic solo at the end. Every time I would press record, I'd do something slightly different than the last time until I liked it. That is that recording in a nutshell.

Note that you have effectively made me want to visit Norway. Or Ireland. Somewhere across the Atlantic with mountains and snow and pleasant people and sunsets such as those.

As far as the song choice. When I first received my assigned song, I was sort of freaking. What the fuck is that? Why is it spelled wrong on tmg.net? There's no tab?! What live show is this from? I had it pretty much figured out in 4 hours though. It's essentially three chords not counting whatever he's doing in the end. I threw in some other chords for fun. I'm also not sure if the recording makes the song a half step higher or if he's using a capo on the first fret but I just went ahead and used the capo.

So I'm only a little ways through this now, but holy fuck, TKurata. That remix is beyond legit.
November 27, 2009 01:14PM | Re: Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats
Colin, did you ask JD for his permission to sell the cds for charity? Because this is a very serious legal issue. I didn't realize before how serious it is but if you do sell the cds, please absolutely ask JD for his permission. If you don't, we are legally liable. Thank you so much.
November 27, 2009 01:25PM | Re: Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats
He's not selling them. The people who get them are asked to donate to Farm Sanctuary, but the plan is that Colin isn't actually collecting any money for them because we thought of that very issue.

Oh I see, people are asked to donate directly to FS in the forum's name? I guess that avoids the issue. At least I hope so. I was really excited about this charity idea but I would hate to see anyone get into any legal problems.
November 27, 2009 02:42PM | Re: Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats
Well as you can probably tell from my recording I'm a Petra Haden fan winking smiley The weird thing is (and I don't know if it's from the original exporting, the conversion, or just things not lining up) the main vocal doesn't quite line up with the rhythm parts as I thought I had it while recording it. Could just be me nitpicking myself to death. Hope yall like it anyhow. I figured short and simple has less risk of complete disaster especially in my first time recording with a new mic and with Audacity.

Thanks to this project I'll be using both a lot more though, this was a blast!

Do you watch Fuckyeah4chan on Tumblr too?

Uh so I am kind of scared to listen to this for some reason. Please don't tell me how awful I am; I can't take it.

I don't know whether I missed something (probably) but are we not all getting physical copies of this mailed to us anymore? Still going to donate whatever.

EDIT: Listening to it, I don't care how bad I am anymore; the whole thing is AWESOME.

this may be the coolest music project I have ever been a part of. and that includes making an album.

I cannot express how happy all these tracks make me.

Beautiful work people.

Colin, so far Magpie is one of my favorite tracks. Couldnt stop laughing.
November 27, 2009 04:27PM | Re: Hi, We're Not the Mountain Goats
4 tracks in. I have nothing but praise which I will post later. Right now I'm reeling...my copy of IRH just came in, making my 12" tMG collection complete. Many many thanks to johnp. On my way to the DC show. For now, I'll say this:

Cold Milk Bottle was everything I hoped it would be.

The Recognition Scene on this tribute I find better than the original. If that's blasphemy, sue me.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm meeting people for drinks...love to all.

Can I tell you how awful you are NOT? You're awesome for doing this despite being scared, and I think it makes the recording interesting. You have a sweet, lovely, non-traditional voice. Luckily, tMG songs don't seem to be about vocal acrobatics, unless I'm completely missing the point. (I would not bother posting anything if I thought you were terribad, btw, so this is not lip service.)

Aw, thank you so much! I was just really keen to be involved and didn't give a thought to whether or not I had any talent at all. It was a lot of fun and I'm soo glad I took part in this.

good work.

If you're wondering who to blame - I want to praise his name with songs and feasting.

You can see who chose the tracks and why at www.uglythingsinthedarkness.com

I've listened to the first 16 tracks and...wow. Still nothing but praise. Right now I've got to make good on buying some folks beer...but I can't wait to hear the rest tomorrow. I'm floored.

Upon further listening, and after realizing that the autoclave cover was done by the guy who said he was too drunk to keep up with the drum machine and did it in one take, I conclude:

This Autoclave cover is fucking genius. And I can't stand Autoclave! You sir, are my hero.
I think this should be the new theme song of the DCL.

Just finished listening it. That was a marathon listening session! Good job all. Bravo!

That one's mine. Thank you so much! It was fun to record.

Nice work, everyone! My own personal favorites: Eidyia's lovely "Alpha Rats Nest", EvilEivind's excellent low-key "Ethiopians", Valrus' "If You See Light" (extra credit for putting it in 5/8), and rmotte's rockin' "Keeping House". Talking Blanket's take on "Seed Song" is also super charming.

(P.S. Who picked "If You See Light"? Their name got left off of the website for whatever reason.)

I picked it, but I think somebody else already had...I'm confused about that actually because I thought Lonesome Surprise and High Doses were going to be on the album. No worries though!

Do you think John will be hurt that nothing off the latest record is on there??

I haven't had a chance to give this a full proper listen, but there are definitely some great tracks on here!!! Props to all!

I'm also confused, because Against Pollution was denied. I'm totally thrilled by Cold Milk Bottle, though.
