greek mythology themes?

July 12, 2007 08:37PM | greek mythology themes?
i'm interested in compiling a list of mg songs that are loosely, closely, or possibly based on greek mythology or greek history.

A few are already favorites: Deianara Crush and Seneca's Trick Mirror, the stories of which i'm pretty familiar with (Hercules burning in his clothes after unfaithfulness to his wife, and nero's murderous rise to power in rome.)

obviously there's tons more-- could y'all help me out with some others? And a brief bit about what they're based on?

Well, there's 'The Recognition Scene' which, as John is so fond of saying, is based on that pleasant moment in Greek theatre wherein every character realises that there is no way they situation they're in can end well, and mass suicide usually ensues.

There's also 'That Hippolytine Feeling.' I couldn't tell you exactly what that song is all about, but I do know John has introduced it live as based upon Greek mythology. Probably wouldn't be hard to figure out where the bulls reference comes from, if one was so inclined.

That Hippolytine Feeling is based on another Heracles tale, but I can only very loosely put that together.

the chorus to "up the wolves" references the story of the founding of Rome by Romulus and Remus, fathered by Mars, whose mortal mother was lost to them in the classic "your kid will murder the king" storyline. as babies they were sent down the Tiber River and eventually came to shore and were adopted and cared for by a female wolf.

i feel like there are a ton more, but i think there are just so many little things, plot lines and subtle references that i hear often without being as evident as others.

historical and literal reference were biggest turn-ons for me when i first heard tmg.

thanks y'all! Yeah, a good deal of them are recognizable by the title, but i'm usually not familiar enough with the names that i know the story without googling it.

Greek mythology != Roman Mythology.

if you're going with general classical themes rather than just Greek, then all of Phylira.
