yeah, I just emailed you a very similar situation that I feel gets around the legal issues.

i wouldnt mind pressing up cd-r copies and shipping them to people, the only issue is that the only printer i have for printing out cover art is black and white. i have a color laser at work but i cant be running off a million high quality copies. ive made some decent cd inserts with a program called cdrlabel and a color inkjet printer but that printer has since passed away. if someone wants to collaborate id be willing to at least donate the cdrs and burning time for a (limited, hand-numbered smiling smiley ??) pressing of these.

You have til the end of the day to pick a song for someone else to cover.

You will have about a month to record your song when it gets assigned tomorrow.

it was actually 2 7"s btw and the mastering date was 5/1, I cancelled it this a.m.
This is why you should be nice to everyone.

I love the tMG forum because of stuff like this. You all are awesome.

I wish I had the skills/time to participate, but I can't wait to hear what you guys record anyways!

Thanks Colin, I'm pretty pumped about this. Even if most of the work on my song will be done by my much-more-musically-talented friend. I can't wait to see what my assignment is.

do I have to hit you over the head with it?

This is most definitely going to be a double CD deal, by the way. There's a hell of a lot more people participating than last year.

By the way, thanks for putting this together. I assume it's a little nerve wracking keeping up with everyone's email/song and generally assembling it all. Good job.

If you need any help getting these things out let us know. Here's a nice randomizer. Open it in two tabs, put names in one and songs in another and SHAZAM! Delete the top on each and go again.

Actually, a little more simple, I have all the songs in an Excel list, each with corresponding numbers. I'll make another list of people participating, and pull numbers out of a hat (or probably just a crumpled up pile on my desk) for each person.

haha, this had been going through my head all day, the manner in which the songs were selected.. you could even just correspond the excel list with the handles, then shift everyone down one, so they get the next in the list. not as romantic and fate-driven as it being completely random, but perhaps a lot less tedious, ahahah
October 19, 2009 10:41PM | Re: HEY JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD AGAIN smiling smiley
how is the song list looking by the way? not leaning too heavily towards a certain album too much or anything like that?

October 19, 2009 11:57PM | Re: HEY JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD AGAIN smiling smiley
i definitely back 'hi, we're not the mountain goats' as the title. i like 'we have all been healed' too.. is anyone throwing around cover art ideas yet?
October 20, 2009 12:08AM | Re: HEY JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD AGAIN smiling smiley
I like "hi, we're not tMG' as well.

all I could come up with was 'standard bitter cover album #2'
October 20, 2009 12:13AM | Re: HEY JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD AGAIN smiling smiley
"Running Away With What John Sang"

"Fan-ily Happiness"

good ones. here's a few more

'....so we gave him what we had'
'hast thou considered the tribute album'
'going to philly to hand deliver this to john'

boy, these are terrible.
October 20, 2009 12:26AM | Re: HEY JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD AGAIN smiling smiley
Fan-ily Happiness just made my day.

Hi, we're not tMG gets my vote, though.

A couple off the top if my head that aren't nearly as good:

The Sunset Spree
Jam Eater Jams
Golden Ploy
October 20, 2009 12:30AM | Re: HEY JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD AGAIN smiling smiley
'hail satan: a tribute to the mountain goats'

ok. I'll stop now.
October 20, 2009 12:35AM | Re: HEY JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD AGAIN smiling smiley
i think we should agree on 'hi, we're not the mountain goats". smiling smiley

edit: 12:35 and refreshing my inbox. colin, i know you're only human but i've been brushing up on every song that i know and don't. i gave up on college a few years back but i did so love the occasional homework assignment, so i'm in a state of constant anticipation!
