October 21, 2009 03:25AM | Re: HEY JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD AGAIN smiling smiley
Hello, I posted a cover version of a MGoats song in another topic. This is a translation/adaptation in French. Because I am French.

Wow, that sounds almost as horrible as recording on a dual-cassette recorder. Oh, wait..... smiling smiley

I also didn't know my song that I received, so I'm having fun learning a new one. Are we playing with the melody or trying to keep it close to the original and just changing instruments/speed/style?

Free-for-all I'm sure...(I hope!)
My only option was to cassette last time, and I think the mic on the cassette-corder is better than my built in laptop one anyway.

Whoever picked my song....

!

Anyway 320kbps mp3 should be fine, although I wouldn't put it past a tMG fan to prefer super low bitrate mp3s...smiling smiley

Hey...I got in on the last comp a few days late, they were pretty strict about not allowing latecomers. You might have to wait until next time around, as we already did a random song selection process.

I could be wrong! If someone needs to back out, they could maybe give their song to you.

I wanted to translate my song into Norwegian (again), but this bitch is proving hard to translate.

Why's everyone in this thread a f***ing Mountain Goats fan?!

No! Please, can't we all submit lossless files? That way we can burn physical copies and they will be real, original source discs. If we want our project to be high-quality this is a no-brainer. Please?

I generally record at 128 Kbps with my mp3 player. I don't think is supports WAV recording.

I know lossless capture will be impossible for some people, but if it's doable, we might as well keep the quality. There is a marked difference, even for lo-fi music.

as the tech naive one here, if I record to my laptop via garage band, what am I recording as and should I send it as that or upload it into itunes and mail the mp3?

right, I think this might turn into quite a long post...

I've made a start on an idea for the album artwork. I've spoken to acowkickedme, and the plan is to make about 50 physical copies, which will be some sort of screen printed gate fold thing, with a letterpress insert with tracks on, I need to get all this done pretty quickly, as I live in London and need to get them sent to the Americas as soon as possible (massive postal strikes coming this way very soon).
(anyone in Europe who contributed, let me know, that way your case wont have to go via America)

also, I thought it'd be really nice to have liner notes, as I'm sure lots of the people who suggested and recorded the songs have something to say about them (also, I'm sure some of you must be talented, aspiring musicians who'd like the opportunity to let people know where they can hear more of their music) unfortunately, I just wont have time to press these, so:

what about something like a wordpress page, where people can put all this information (also anything like pictures/video of recording/practise) that would act as a sort of micro-site for the album, and I put the web address on the CD somewhere?

tell me your thoughts.

@Daley

That sounds pretty awesome man!

@nigel

I forgot this is going on a physical CD, lossless would definitely be better!! I wonder how many people use lossy session files though... Anyway, I definitely highly discourage 128k mp3 people, they tend to sound awful on any decent speaker.

mp3 compression =/= tape grind!!! smiling smiley

So if we contributed a song we get a copy? I'm stoked about the letterpress.

I can host the mini-site at somewhere like [nigelewan.com], if you guys don't mind the domain name being that. Or some generous person could buy a domain name for the project and point it there. Either way, I'd be happy to set up the content management system.

I assumed that's the plan? I'll let someone else work out how people actually get hold of them smiling smiley
No idea what's happening with the extra 15 or so, It's up to everyone, I supose

Just a thought - 32 songs might well be more than one CD can take, might it not? So the case would have to accomodate two CDs.

Sorry if this has already been thought of and covered/they make CDs with a longer capacity now.

My dad took music tech, he'd be so disappointed...but can you tell me what this means practically?
When I copy a tape into GarageBand I just hit record or whatever it is...are there any settings I need to alter first? & what do I need to save it as?

That would work fine if you are down with that I imagine, but also if we wanted something free we could try out this thing I just discovered called Bandcamp.
Just check it, it is free and really handy.

Each person is going to write like one paragraph about why they chose the song they did and another paragraph about the song they covered? Sounds like fun!

EDIT: I currently own the domain [www.uglythingsinthedarkness.com] which is taken from the song In The Craters on the Moon (obviously!) and would be willing to set up a redirect to the wordpress page once it's ready. That is if y'all want to use that name.

I've got big plans.Talking BlanketYay, Butts! LOL!

I talked to the people at Farm Sanctuary last night about donations and such. If we wanted to give away copies, there could be a suggested donation which could go straight to Farm Sanctuary through their website.

Maybe there could be a limited edition of the 50 (labeled 1/50, etc) nice covers, and there could be a less fancy ones so that moe people could get copies if they wanted, but daley doesn't have to go bankrupt and die from stress overload?

Sweet. That domain sounds is what we need. I will handle the web end of things, ok everyone? It won't cost me anything, so we might as well opt for a full-on site instead of something like Bandcamp, which is still cool

I'll email Colin and let him know, and once we get the site squared away, I'll email you, Bill, and get the forwarding set up.
