I can't comment on the shotgun lyric, but the imagery of a Louisiana graveyard makes me think of swamps, where the land shifts, rather than the picturesque cemeteries, but I don't know if the larger context of the song has implications toward the latter, either. My husband, a native of Southern Mississippi, informs me that large sections of Northern Louisiana is not swampland either, so even my imagery probably isn't that much better.

alycea, that was my husband's comment when I mentioned it to him and got his commentary about marshland but I didn't want to steal his idea... and it also plays into the fact that it's less a culture of Louisiana and more a culture of New Orleans.

I've had that same thought. Then again, Louisiana just sounds better in the lyric. Try it:

"Like a New Orleans graveyard.." It doesn't sound right.

Perhaps a purely artistic decision on that front? I mean, I'm from Philadelphia and have admittedly never been to Louisiana, and maybe that's why I automatically think "New Orleans" when I hear the line, maybe that's the idea.

Thank you. Finally someone who understands why I moved the fuck away. The thing is that New Orleans is at sea level. Anything buried at sea level like a casket is eventually going to rise to the surface; this is the reason why they are buried above ground. If you look at the sea levels of Louisiana, it's really confined the the New Orleans, "tip of the boot" area. The reason for this is that that area is built basically on the mud of the Mississippi Delta. Most of South Louisiana is pretty flat but not as far down sea level wise. I lived a little North of Baton Rouge my entire life an there were hills around my house. As a boy, I've explored a great number of cemeteries in BR, Lafayette, NOLA, and other random places and NOLA was the only place that I found to be above ground. It was also the most fun to play hide and seek in.
As far as shotguns go...A shotgun shell looks like this:



When you shoot a shotgun into shit, you see all the holes that the "shot" makes. Bullets have a more contained blast and create a singular hole. Shotgun shells destroy everything and spray the target. I learned this by shooting my mom's shotgun when I was drunk and pissed. Very therapeutic. Also, I'm a bit drunk now so it's hard to explain shit thoroughly.

Edit: While I seem very angry at my hometown and regard it as the shittiest place in the world, I do miss it. Especially this time of year. There are wonderful things about South Louisiana, just very few.

I mean, on the bright side, at least you found out that she's dating someone (and judging from the fact that she went on a date with you behind his back, she's probably also a lying sack of shit among other things) now and not later. One of my close friends found out that his ex was dating another guy for 2 years behind his back. Ouch.

So this is going to be a weird story but I think you will all get a laugh out of this, as morose as it is for me in some ways.
About 9 months ago I was dating this girl. We were always drinking malt liquor, gin, and whiskey. Our entire relationship consisted of drinking, having sex, and then finding some escape from one another as quickly as possible. The majority of that time was spent in her new and empty apartment. When I say empty, I mean, we had liquor, a radio, and some blankets. I could have brought my shit over but it was the last thing on either of our minds. Was wonderful but destined to collapse in on itself.
Anyway, so I'm getting out of the shower earlier and notice something on my err...rear end in the mirror. Then I remember...This one time we were incredibly hungover, I was talking to my mother on the phone. Suddenly she decides it would be a good idea to purposefully stick the lit end of her cigarette into my ass cheek. I mean...that was 9 months ago and I'm still a little pissed. She branded me... Who does that? So yeah, this was the first thing that came to my mind when I discovered that scar and remembered that little story. It's in the liner notes from Tallahassee. Sorry if that story is too much info. I thought it was funny, sort of.
