a couple of board etiquette points

July 21, 2009 01:16PM | a couple of board etiquette points
People, in the past there've been requests before for a sticky stating some forum rules. I'm generally resistive to this idea, especially since for the most part we're a tight-knit group here & don't need some guy saying "do this, don't do that," but I think maybe it's time for a loose guidelines kinda deal. feel free to discuss to death, derail ruthlessly, post pics of tattoos, etc!

1) as with the LPTJ forum (where things get a little more contentious, admittedly), a big difference here is that we keep it pretty positive. this means not speaking abusively to people. yes, even if you feel they have spoken abusively to you. I don't like having to regulate on this, it's almost never a problem. if you're not into what somebody's saying, there are other threads to read. there are a lot of forums & blogs where you can get aggro if that's what you're into but I like it to be real mellow & positive around here. ok?

2) before long it'll be new album time. I'm relaxing the rules this time because to be honest I feel I have been unduly fascistic in the past, and fascism is not a good look. I assume that the album will leak shortly after I announce it (in a couple of weeks, so keep your shirt on). if people who've grabbed a leak want to talk about it, I really don't see the harm. (shock reversal right? opinions change as history marches on, etc) Can you link to rapidshares/ysis/etc of the album? Of course not, what a silly question. I feel that maybe there ought to be a spoiler-do-not-read-if-you-wanna-wait-for-release-date tag if/when a "talk about the leak" thread starts.
2a) Q: But John! What if somebody says they can't find the leak and needs our help?
A: Anybody who needs help finding a leak does not belong on the internet in my opinion. It is not rocket science. This also means don't come with the v. v. insulting "hey, Forum Member X, check your messages...I have, uh, information for you" etc. That is like personally insulting to me. OK?
July 21, 2009 01:25PM | Re: a couple of board etiquette points
oh yeah and also

3) while I can dig where people are coming from, it is not "spam" if it relates directly to the forum's main concern. you know? somebody trying to sell you drapes, that would be spam. unless the drapes had my face on them, in which case, what are you, crazy, nobody needs a giant image of my face looking at them 24/7. but you guys see where I'm coming from? when writers, sites, etc., register for this site to post a link to something in which the community is interested, that doesn't count as spam for me. HOWEVER, if the community wants, I can start a fourth forum specifically for people to put such links in, though that will mess with the nice clean three-board interface, so I'd rather not. OK?

I answered a question and the question was then edited out by its author, so I deleted my answer...this thread's off to a really encouraging start, eh?

A sticky thread means that it remains at the top of the board, because it contains information of general interest to the forum's participants. I had been hoping that this particular sticky thread would be mainly for any clarification needed on its initial posts' subjects, but I guess if people want to derail it, that's fine too, it doesn't really matter so long as the message of the first posts get across.

I hope I'm able to stay ignorant of any leaked material. Bootlegs take away from the excitement of anticipating a new album.

So, not to turn this thread into a discussion about the new album, but how many different releases will there be? I need to start saving money if there are bonus tracks on the Japanese, Turkish or iTunes release.
I have to start saving up for those John Darnielle drapes that were hinted at. They'll be just the thing to compliment the Morrissey tapestry I've been using as a rug for my living room.

Honestly, though, if The Mountain Goats were to ever "sell out," please let it come in the form of things sold at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

"Hey, check out my John Darnielle Juicer!"

Oh my God I've never thought of a fantasy kitchen until today.

Also John Darnielle Drain Cleaner would be very nice, with the slogan: "When the scum begins to circle the drain, everybody loves a winner!"

I hope this thread gets locked before it hits page two, or the true message behind it may be lost forever.

"Turn on the taps, be fruitful and multiply"

(which actually could be interpreted as a description of these threads, how they blossom, get fruitful and multiply)

Derailment time.

I'm OrangeJulius, some of you might remember. Well, my password isn't working, and it says it doesn't recognize my email for password retrieval. When I tried to register under that email, it said it's take. I am confused and would like some help. I figure that though this is not really the place to post this, it isn't entirely unlikely that John will happen across it and help me out.

Also, no one welcome me. I'm not new.
