Sort of a bittersweet thing...the saddest kind of thing in my opinion...but then again I'm several drinks in.

you know, that song is sad, but it just doesn't have lines like:

Sometimes I'll meet you out there
Lonely and frightened
Flicking my tongue out at the wet leaves

-or-

I turned it over in my mind
Like a living Chinese finger trap
Seaweed in Indiana sawgrass

there is much to be said about similes that give the song to the listener more.

of course, my pick way back in the day was "snow crush killing song."

it's the "i know it" part

i KNOW you're changing

i KNOW that i'm not coming with you

i KNOW that i'm being left behind here, without you beside me

i KNOW that you're changing

and i KNOW that i'm not

so goddamn you for that

Matthew 25:21.

This.

Also Deuteronomy 2:10, since seeing that song live, the last verse about the frogs in particular gets me every time.

"This is a song.... for you,

In case I never make it through, to where you arrrrrrrrrrrre...."

Shadow Song. It has to be Shadow Song.

I must add though that Snow Crush Killing Song did make my personal "Top 10 Saddest Songs Ever" list.

For me, these are the ones that get to me most: In Corolla, Game Shows Touch Our Lives, Jeff Davis County Blues, The Mess Inside, Woke Up New, Half Dead, How to Embrace a Swamp Monster, Whole Wide World, Have to Explode, Your Belgian Things. Not all necessarily "sad," but they all do something to me.

Matthew 25:21

I agree with everyone who said Shadow Song

I'm confused by everyone who said New Star Song (would love to hear explanations, it just doesn't get to me in any way, though I love the song itself)

Would like to suggest "From TG&Y" as one of the saddest-ever.

Have to agree with all the people who say Matthew 25:21. "You were a presence full of light upon the earth, and I am a witness to your life and to its worth." Always reminds me of my beautiful aunt who passed away late last year from breast cancer. She was an amazing person and I'm thankful for every second that she was on this earth. I think we all know somebody like that, and this song just gets it.

No mention of Mole? That song is tragic.
This reminds me. My dad is a very literal kind of person. Most tMG sort of just goes through him, because of all the similes and metaphors. He also loves animals a lot. I was listening to Mole, and he came up and started listening too. Then his face went all sad, and he went, "Oh... did they turn the lights off on the poor wee mole? Poor guy."

Ahhh! Can't believe I forgot Mole! I've always found that song very underrated.

Something about the chorus of Your Belgian Things makes me feel that particular bitter-sweet sadness normally associated with the recollection of distant memories almost too perfect to have ever been real.

For straight up melancholia however I'd have to agree with the people who've suggested both Snow Crush Killing Song and Maize Stalk Drinking Blood.

i think the potentially saddest mg song would be about frank zappa and prostate cancer.

Shadow Song is really sad, but for me Tetrapod touches me most. Because of course it reminds me of my youth, and the belief in the last line, about getting onto dry land, is so so sad for me, because it's true, but at the time, i remember it felt like it was quicker for a molecule to evolve into a human that it was for me to get out of that house.

i think the reason that "genesis" song hit me the way it did was because of what it was almost saying.

i don't live there anymore.

Probably "Strawberry Fields Forever."

"But not me,
I'm gonna crawl,
I'm gonna crawl,
I'm gonna crawl,
Back to the sea."

"Goddamit, I love John Coltrane."
