Yes.

Does this really require ANOTHER thread, Megan D?
April 26, 2007 01:58AM | Re: Is Sweden A Concept Album?
No.

No, it is an album with a theme - though I don't feel like all of the songs on Sweden pertain to that theme: Whole Wide World, for example. A concept album, to me, has a deinite subject matter i.e Tallahassee, The Sunset Tree etc.

I think it's an interesting discussion Mike. No one's forcing you to partake in it. smiling smiley

I believe that sweden does have a definite subject matter, but has a story arc that is prone to very different interpretations. I think we can all agree that the subject follows at least two people and a deteriorating relationship. That much at the very minimum.

Why don't you think Whole Wide World fits? Are you familier with this text? I find it hard to think of Sweden as anything other conceptual after reading it.

Personally, I don't think of The Sunset Tree as conceptual.

So you did a key word search of: silver bell, ring & trope from the "Whole Wide World" Lyrics and they happen to appear in The Testament Of Cresseid. And this proves your point how? TST is one of the most blatant examples of a concept album. It is clearly about the abusive relationship in childhood between John and his father.

Read the poem man, it's more than just the same words in two spots.

The Sunset Tree is a very personal, self confessional album. More of an autobiographical deal. When you say that Sweden is a group of songs relating to a theme, that's more how I think of The Sunset Tree. But, I am willing to accept that it is indeed a concept album. Just perhaps a concept album in a more looser sense of the word. Looser than in the case of Sweden, at least.

In regards to the poem. No I did not just search for those words. If you read the thing in it's entirety, big ask I know, you will see themes and images that appear in Sweden repeated over and over. Parrallels of sorts between the two narratives begin to appear.

Yes, there are the silver bell references. (In terms of Neon Orange Glimmer Song, I feel that is very interesting, and important).

There is also the image in the poem of cupid pulling the planets down to pass judgement on Cresseid, which is echoed in 'tahitianambrosia maker.' (''cause I saw the sky coming down to meet you). If you look at that line in the context of the poem, it really casts a diferent, more sinister slat on the song. But that a discussion for another day.

There are countless more images and themes like this that apear in the poem and are echoed in Sweden.

Oh, and I didn't search for those words anyway. Nall did. All credit for the discovery of the poem and highlighting of interesting moments must go to him.

most good albums that are cohesive and work as a whole are concept albums as far as i'm concerned

thematic links are included in this: not all concept albums have to have a definite, well-defined narrative.

i always wondered where the swedish phrases came from in the sweden liner notes. it turns out they all come from a swedish grammar book! why isn't waving their hands in the air?

i thought Sweden was mainly about a doomed couple, different from the Alpha Couple, and that they also show back up in the album that is not to be named - as in the line "I spent five years in Sweden, dying for you" from Ghosts. i think that makes it more of a concept album than the loosely related All Hail West Texas cast.
