JOHN, FEEL FREE TO READ THIS THREAD NOW!!!!!

October 29, 2008 03:05PM | Re: JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD! REALLY!
In the liner notes on All Hail West Texas, John talks about the tape player being a second performer on the recordings. Use it to your advantage.
October 29, 2008 03:11PM | Re: JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD! REALLY!
I guess it isn't quite the same to me because the digital mic doesn't have the same sort of sound - it just sounds tinny and weird. I would love to have an actual tape, that would sound infinitely more rad.

But then how in the world do you get that on the computer?

edit: I know nothing about any form of technology, even old technology. smiling smiley

Simple, just plug your stereo system's line out into the computer's line in. Just need the right kind of cables and plugs. Some stereo systems may not have a line out, though.

Why's everyone in this thread a f***ing Mountain Goats fan?!

Hah, mine is ultra lo-fi. I don't have any fancy line out (or line in). I played the tape into the computer microphone.
October 29, 2008 09:18PM | Re: JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD! REALLY!
Apparently what I need is some old school tape recorder thing. I wonder if I can get one at goodwill or something.

I used Garage Band.

Is that for the NINTENDOZ?
October 30, 2008 08:58AM | Re: JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD! REALLY!
Just saw this thread...

...isn't this a bit like doing a Bowie tribute album and limiting it to versions of "Changes"?

Kinda kidding--I'm definitely looking forward to hearing the finished product!

Yes you do. It's called a headphone jack. Take it to RadioShack and they will assist you, but it will just take a 1/8" to 1/8" miniplug to go into your computer.

From there you just need a simple wav editor/recorder to transfer to your computer. Just hit record on the device (check your Volume Control to make sure input or mic is not muted, or vice versa) and play on your cassette. Then save as mp3 or wav...

oh wow..

ok anyway.
I'm starting this project a little late, but I have tomorrow off and I'll try to get it done by the end of the day!
if not, that's ok too, you'll probably live without my contribution! Either way - I want to listen to the result, I'll even pay money for it! : )
October 31, 2008 04:05PM | Re: JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD! REALLY!
I'm really excited to hear all the versions.

How many songs have we got so far?
November 01, 2008 11:20AM | Re: JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD! REALLY!
9 songs... about a 20 minute EP.

it was actually 2 7"s btw and the mastering date was 5/1, I cancelled it this a.m.
This is why you should be nice to everyone.
November 01, 2008 12:13PM | Re: JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD! REALLY!
That's not a bad length for a project like this, I think. Any more than a half hour of the same song and I'd want to gouge my ears out.
November 01, 2008 12:15PM | Re: JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD! REALLY!
I was going to say "you wouldn't get away with a 9-track EP here" but I looked it up and apparently it's alright if there's different versions of songs, you just can't have more than four different songs. If I understand right. But! There's a whole day left! Let's push into album territory!

^Let's push into album territory so we can watch the YouTube video of dtrom4 gouging his ears out!

damn. I had fun with this but it just won't make it to the final cd.. haha. because I just can't finish it...

I was thinking more along the lines of phono outputs. Using the headphone jack makes everything sound like it's underwater. Though that could be because of all the other lousy recording equipment I have.

Shame. I think I'll finish mine anyway though, and just post it up here when my exams are finished. It's halfway not that bad.

Damn you, graduate school. Didn't have time to get my mbira version ready. Oh well, next time.
November 03, 2008 08:04AM | Re: JOHN DON'T READ THIS THREAD! REALLY!
Okay, thanks everyone for submitting. We have 11 tracks total. I'll post in the coming days (though in all likelihood, a week) as to how this will be distributed. People who submitted will get their copies first (though it may end up being just mp3's with album art... money's really tight), then I'll post info for everyone else to hear it.

But JD's gotta get it first >.<
