I deleted the facebook group. It was inherently counterproductive.

every time this question comes up I do however feel like a chump for turning down offers to license my songs for commercials etc. It's like, why should I care? Still, we soldier on.

JOHN!! DON'T LICENSE YOUR SONGS FOR COMMERCIALS! I mean, I'm not being a snob or anything. And I know that this wasn't the point of your comment. It's just...well, Sting had it right in the 80s when he said that he wouldn't license "Don't Stand so Close to Me" for a deoderant commercial (though clearly his mind has changed since then...fancy cars are clearly his weakness). I mean...why is Iron & Wine's "Such Great Heights" selling M&Ms? Your songs should not sell anything but your records!
and um...that's all.

To John: First of all, it's really cool that you choose to respond to these threads yourself, a lot of musicians wouldn't bother.

I didn't read the whole thread so maybe somebody else already asked, but here's a question for you: did you ever consider re-recording the songs on HAFG? I've skipped through this thread rapidly and I've got the idea your main problem with the record is the fact that there was something wrong with your recording equipment. Well, of course I understand that there has been some evolution in your songwriting since HAFG, so maybe you're not interested in recording old songs. But I was just wondering...

i think you can totally license your songs for commercials. but i know you don't want to. but if you would i wouldn't mind at all. just saying.

edit: also, that sting song is a pretty bad example. ok, he didn't license it for a deoderant commercial. but he did license it for an episode of Friends where Joey was a posterboy for STD awareness.

To the best of my knowledge, he played Ghosts voluntarily into the 2000's, so they can't be thought of as too bad. (or at least a few of them can't)

anyone see the commercial for golden boy peanuts?

the song in the background is sting's "field of gold."

oh...wait...no...you misunderstood my parenthetical note where I said "though clearly his [Sting's] mind has changed since then..." I know those parentheses can be really tricky. And I'm sure JD had no idea that he had the free will to license or not. I'm glad you reminded him.

Dilaudid and If You See Light have no guitar in them, but they're played just fine live.

PS. I think you have the wrong thread.

ps - it's either my emmo, or i'm very, very sorry.

1000 pardons!

maybe we should let this thread blend back into the background. you know, new album time, perhaps it doesn't need to hover at the top of the page? just to be nice?
